Did CPJ change the blocking scheme for the last few games?

Some GT fan on tigerdroppings posted this:

"From what i've read on most GT blogs, the main reason for the increased production of the 3O is that CPJ changed the blocking techniques in the last few games. At Navy, because his line was undersized he had them cut blocking everyone, and apparently the current o-line at GT just wasn't very good at it. Now he's going back to the more traditional up-right blocking that GT's o-line had done in the pro-style offense that Chan Gailey ran, and the results have been quite apparent."

Anyone have some insight?

I think the amount of cut blocking has always been overblown anyway. Not every lineman cuts on every play. We did do some against both Miami and ugag but whether it was more or not I don't know. I do know that he changes blocking schemes during games to take advantage of what the defense is doing.

He changed what our tackles were doing prior to the Miami game...primarily with Claytor to take advantage of his skill set.

You mean...we have a coach that takes advantage of our players skill set instead of forcing them into a scheme they aren't good at?

I love this man.

evidence would suggest this, Refrigerator Mover do you have any insight on this? It would make sense to me just because the O line has been MILES better the last two games.

We had two cut-blocking penalties against uga so it wasn't completely removed. Like others said, our HC just made adjustments. LSU can try to assume what adjustments he'll make in a month's time ;)

Some adjustments have been made but the kids have done a good job of getting to the second level and getting a hat on the LB's. That's what I have noticed.

I know what you meant....but cut-blocking is legal...chop blocking is not.

However, we did not have any chop block penalties against UGA. We had 5 penalties for a total of 35 yards.

We had:
1) Illegal shift on offense- 5 yds.
2) Block from behind on punt return- 10 yds
3) Holding on offense- 10 yds.
4) Encroachment by defense- 5 yds.
5) Delay of game on offense - 5 yds

I don't think the scheme has changed very much. I think our guys have just gotten better at it. Starting with FSU, we have to be averaging about 400 yards per game. Even against UNC we put up big yardage, even though we didn't get a single point.

We are also seeing the developement of Nesbitt. If the BB dive isn't there but Josh hands off anyway, it makes the oline look bad. But when Josh pulls the ball back and runs to the edge, the oline looks good.

The big change in our last 2 games was in eliminating turnovers. Blocking did take a big leap forward in the FSU game.

The OL blocking just improved, we still cut block but it depends on the play.

Correct on both accounts. I did mean chop-blocks. And I was actually thinking of illegal shifts. I knew it had to do specifically with our offense. CPJ was not happy about the illegal shift call.

IIRC, we had 2 illegal shifts, the 2nd of which was declined. And the delay of game was intentional.

Not that it matters. ;)

It's helmet to knee football.
How PJ described the offense to me lo these many years ago.

Both of the illegal shifts were correctly called too, one of our players started moving towards the line of scrimmage before the ball was snapped.

That would be a great move in Canada though!

I thought the second one was wrong. Dwyer started just a hair after the snap.

The first one was damned near simultaneous with the snap and I could see why the ref called it, although I couldn't tell how he could possibly see the ball being snapped. An OL moved at the same time as Dwyer as well on that one, and the other A-back (the non-motion A-back).

I think the blocking scheme was changed from "bad" to "good". I think Dwyer made better reads as well. Also I think Coach Johnson confused UGAg by running a lot out of the formation with only one A-back offset from the line. Earlier in the season that was always a passing formation.

CPJ's blocking scheme change:

"Okay, this time, you guys should actually try to block."
