DJ Donley considering return to GT

here we go again..I hope he does..we need him on D-

I hope he does whatever is best for him, and his family, and his situation. Of course, I would much rather that be return to Tech, however, if he needs to go elsewhere, there will be no sniping at him by me. Good luck to the man.

We need him, especially since our new DC likes nickel.

yes I would love him back. but if he comes back he will be RS'd. So either way, we won't see him on the field this year as I understand it.

I would love to have him back. The mans got skillz and he looks damn good in white and gold.

Why would he be redshirted?

Believe it has to do with NCAA rules regarding "progress towards a degree". Has to take so many credits over the course of a year, and because he is sitting out spring semester, that kills his chance of hitting that number. Can someone else confirm?

no, from what I am told its b/c PJ doesn't want people missing mandatory conditioning drills and spring football, when other S's are working there butts off to start, and have a guy thrown into the mix in fall; who is partially ready at a new position, may not be able to fully contribute well into the season and potentially waste a year of good eligibility.

Its more to do with you are with this team or your not, if you are you can play if you are not you have to wait your turn. That is how I interpreted it; and I believe under PJ you will see more RS's and more of a tough love attitude on the players.

Of course...LOL...DJ could come on board in fall and start and I eat my words...I didn't hear this from a coach, but I did hear it from a contact in the AA.

It would be hard to keep him off the field if he is so much better than anyone else we have.

i don't think anyone knows he is so much better than anyone else; but if he was...I agree you can't keep him off the field....but I don't think the staff could justify sitting a guy on the first team defense that played all spring sit him come fall time missing extra practice for DJ to get the reps in the HOPE he is so much better...if he doesn't turn out to be...now you have two S's with half time at 1st team position. And S is a bigtime chemistry position. That is just my opinion...how I would break it down; and how I interpreted what I was told. Again I haven't heard anything from the coaches directly and the coaches today have never seen DJ take a snap at S in college.

I think the fans think he is so much better....i personally don't know that...never seen him take one snap at S. Its just hopes vs reality and vs what could possibly happen in the given time.

33, you're the one saying he would be RS'd but not why. Is it due to progress towards a degree, or are you speculating?

If DJ comes back there is a strong possibility he will just be redshirted, it would come down to grades and also what Paul decides. More then likely I think you would see him redshirting although most of us would love to see him on the field in the fall. I would say the chance of DJ returning has greatly increased in the past 2 weeks as well, he should make his decision soon.

I think the main reason he would sit out is because he would be learning a totally new position. Yes, he played safety in high school, but this ain't high school any more. The defensive backfield is one of the toughest positions to transition to on the college level. Coach Johnson is coming into a situation where he really doesn't know the personnel well and is going to try to set a depth chart in the spring. Donley wont be around in the spring to learn all the intricacies of the new system. I'm sure Coach Johnson wants Donley's best 3 years and he is willing to wait a year in order to get those best 3.

I think you underestimate CPJ's character. He doesn't come across as the kind of guy that would play those games.

At the same time, you would not have thought O'Leary would have...but he let Stimson and Watkins back after a hiatus.

I tend to think if he does not play it would be because of a lack of credits. The SS position is wide open and without experience this year...so he is not much different than anyone else when it comes to PT.

He will play, unless he has to sit out for some NCAA rule reason. I hope he does come back, whether on D or O. He made a great catch in the uga game for a TD. He can play on either side of the ball.

If CPJ allows him back and he is eligiable he will START PEROID!!! But he has got to want to bee here first and formost...
