Do new hire coaches ever coach the bowl game?

I've heard chatter about if UGAg were to play Miami in the Liberty bowl, would Richt coach Miami? I may be wrong, but I don't remember a newly hired coach ever coaching a bowl game, much less coaching at all. Why would he coach a team he has not seen practice all season, doesn't have his own staff on board yet, and a class of seniors that he won't see again.

Didn't CPJ watch our bowl from the stands or a press box or something the year he was hired?

Where are you hearing this chatter? Is it coming from the same people who thought he'd stay on to coach UGA in the bowl game?

I've seen it on some other sports-vent boards, heard it a few times locally. I'm sure it's all people that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, but I've just never heard of it at all, and it seemed weird that I had now heard about it in this situation from several different places.

CPJ was in the press box. He came on and made some comments and answered some questions with who ever was announcing the game. I want to say we were playing Fresno in that bowl game.

I don't know if it's ever been done. I suppose you could put the guy on the sidelines just for show; maybe give him a headset that's not even turned on. But, an assistant already in place would be doing the coaching, I would think.

Typically I see them show up and do an interview with the broadcasters, but they only support the team. They aren't on the sideline until the paperwork is inked and the interim/old coaches complete the season.

Do you guys really think that the SEC would allow UGA to be matched with Miami in a bowl game?

Plus, UGA will draw a better opponent than Miami based on records I would think.

Yeah, CPJ was at the Fresno State Humanitarian Bowl. I was one of the only GT people there - sat on the 50 yard line. It was a good trip, but probably the single most irritating game I've ever seen in terms of lack of effort/obviously not giving a flip on the field. No pride at all.

I think that was the game where, as the team left the field, some U[sic]GA asshole was waving a U[sic]GA flag in the players' faces as they walked off the field down the tunnel. IN BOISE. One player (don't remember who it was) at least tried to snatch the flag from the guy, but everybody else just walked by.

Wouldn't seem wise. You'd be coaching someone else's team, and if you lose, even if not your fault, it is a negative start to your tenure.
