Does GT need a new QB coach?

Perhaps O'Brien is a pretty decent offensive co-ordinator, but is he a pretty decent QB coach, which is his coaching position? While big Ralph was here, we developed Hamilton & Godsey was ready to step in. We brought in 0 scholarship QBs for this season, but did get an athletic walk-on, Jarod Alford from Valdosta(shades of Dusty Bonner?). I say we have a serious deficiency @ QB Coach. We lose GG & let's see what our QB coach has ready for us:
1) Suggs- knows the playbook, but is not executing, with talent around him, to be more than 6-4. Had a chance to W 3 games from close in on his last possession.(2 ints, illegle forward pass & inc's). Mental aspect? Best QB in Ga his Sr yr.
2) Bilbo- very athletic. Doesn't know playbook? Plays very little after opening 2 games. Best QB in Miss his Sr yr.
3) Camp-hasn't played since opening 2 games. Ohio player of the year. moved to FB to try & get PT. Moved back to QB. What happened to Ohio POTY?
4) Hall-Godsey's backup who plays in mop up duty in '01. Transfers to Delaware after Spring. Wins #1 QB job in fall practice @ a solid 1aa program. Best QB in SCar his Sr yr.
5) Logan-moves to WR to try for playing time because of his athletic ability. SCar POTY.
6) Johnson-redshirts in '01. Highly thought of QB from Ohio. Moved to WR to try for PT because of his athletic ability. Transfers after 1 yr.
7) Landry-moves to S to get playing time because of his athletic ability. Very highly thought of QB in La his Sr yr.

Tell me what the heck is going on with our QB situation, recruitment of QBs & teaching them the position. This portfolio of recent lack of QB developement smacks of 'poor' coaching. We really need someone to develope some QBs.

One common thread about your entire post is that BOB has done everything that you mentioned ..excetion being Camp..but he was never higher than 3rd string...maybe your answer is BOB is good at calling Friege's Playbook but not so good at decision making with personel.

BUT i dont feel there is a coaching problem. just a qb problem....that strategy to oopen the game with 3 different sets of recievers and wearout the db's for a quick strike was awesome...too bad AJ's passes were 10 yards over thrown each time

Jasper,
thanks for the input. Camp's 1st 2 yrs here were @ QB with O'B as his QB coach. O'B moves Camp to FB for O'B's 1st yr as OC. O'B moves Camp back to QB for O'B's 2nd yr as OC & is still his position coach. You said Camp "never higher than 3rd string" & is now in his 4th yr of the program. Are U saying the Ohio POTY has shown zero improvement @ GT?
Remember 1 of Suggs' early long bombs was a 40 yd strike to Bridges, who didn't catch it.
Isn't a "QB problem" also a QB coach's problem?

""QB problem" also a QB coach's problem"
yes but are you leaning towards getting rid of BOB...I don't think that is the answer. If that happened we might have Dyke at QB..remeber CG with Ray Lucas wasn't he a punter before CG..I may be mistaken

Perhaps O'B moves back to RB coach & gives Nix a shot at coaching the position Nix played as a starter @ Auburn. Or O'B takes over WR coach, which may also need some help. Or O'B takes over STs, which really need some help. There are many answers besides firing him off the staff.
Besides, I think O'B goes job hunting, again, this winter anyway.

jasper,

Lucas was actually the backup QB for the Jets. He actually had a half decent season playing the starter role the year that Vinny was out.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....

We have a QB coach who normally coaches running backs. We have a running backs coach who was a great QB. Seems bass ackwards to me.

Not arguing but most coaches seem to coach a position other than what they played for some reason. Wasn't the Fridge a lineman?

Fridge played QB unil he got too big. O"brien played defensive line and linebacker at Brown.

YellowJacket, I wonder if Fridge was any bigger than the Kentucky quarterback?

Speaking of bass ackwards, we bring in a boatload of QBs & move ALL, but Bilbo, to different positions. Then, to fill the void, we bring in 0 QBs. Am I missing something?
2 QBs fled O'B's system, 3 have moved to different positions because of athletic ability, & 1 with an arm/no athletic ability & no chance to play was moved back to QB purely in case of a catastrophe.
Sorry if I seem to have a hard time following the 'QB shuffle' O'Brien is running.

Big Ralph had Hamilton and Godsey. BOB has Suggs. While AJ is a decent QB, he lacks the confidence and athletic ability of his predecessors. BOB has done an outstanding job as OC and QB coach. A great coach calls key plays. A talented squad is able to execute them.

I guess I'm probably as befuddled as anyone as to the QB situation. Why doesn't CG just go ahead and get rid of BOB and cut all the ties to GOL and be done with it. As long as CG is looking over his shoulder and wondering if BOB is saying to himself what would GOL have done in this situation CG will not have the sucess that we not only want but that we expect. Let CG just cut all the ties to GOL and be done with it.

I don't see how anyone can say O'brien has done a "great job" as QB coach. Suggs is adequate at best, makes terrible decisions on throwing into coverage and also under O'briens tutelage we have have another guy (Bilbo) loaded with talent who apparently cannot learn the plays. Doesn't sound like O'Brien has "coached up" either of them. I think O'Briens lack of ability to teach QB play far overshadows any other alleged weakness he may have.

Kingbee- "Big Ralph had Hamilton and Godsey. BOB has Suggs. While AJ is a decent QB, he lacks the confidence and athletic ability of his predecessors. BOB has done an outstanding job as OC and QB coach. A great coach calls key plays. A talented squad is able to execute them."

Kingbee, AJ was much higher rated coming out of HS than GG. I think that anyone who follows GT football would admit they were surprised that GG turned out to be as effective as he was. I would argue that having Fridge as his QB coach had a lot to do with that. Or you could argue that AJ was overrated and GG underrated. But look and see what Fridge is doing with his QB (and whole team) at MD and you can see which way I lean.

Generally Offensive Coordinators also coach the Quarter Backs (Not always but more times than not). This is because the QB is the most important player as far as implementing a game plan and the OC and QB must be on the same page. As far as Patrick Nix becoming OC..it will not happen until he has a full grasp of the offense. I think and hope Bill O'Brien will be at GT next year. He is a good coach and taking a lot of heat from people who don't have a full appreciation of what it takes to be OC.
