We dont have the best d line in the nation. Not even top 10. Finally play a good o line and this is what happens. MJ is a good DE not great. Same with our D line. Good but not great. Very disappointed with the teams performance.

Our D line was not all it has been played up to be. There was not enough pressure put on the QB for most of the day. UVA does have a pretty good O line, but our D line didn't come to play for 60 minutes today.

We lost because they were overmatched and our linebackers couldnt make 1 on 1 tackles today.

Our D-line is very good, but they were not very good today. UVA showed the best possible game plan for beating us:
1. Don't try to run right at us - go outside then cut upfield hard. Take your chance with our LB's and secondary. Peerman was great at going outside then when he turned upfield he went really hard and fast. I was disappointed at how seldom first man to him made the tackle.
2. Throw short and quick. Don't leave your QB in the pocket long.
3. Hold. Refs don't call them all. You just might make the big plays you need to win the game if you hold the D-line.

It doesn't help much when UVA's O line gets away with holding in key situations...Just a thought.:dunno:

Also give UVA some credit...They do have some big mofos up there on that O line.

This one is on the LB's and DB's. The four guys up front cannot cover for 3 LB's who are repeatedly out of position. They did not play their best, but they w ere up against a very good OL today - not a pretty good OL.

That said, I saw them lose contain more today than I've ever seen of this group. Not their best game.

UVa did an incredible job of stopping whatever package we brought against them. They had an answer for every blitz in our playbook today.

I, for one, could not believe how they held an extra man back there every single time we brought an extra man in. Its like they were intercepting our defensive signals. Or something.

Good post. Our OLBs clearly aren't containing very well. Also note a number of times UVa would hit a man dragging across the middle against the flow. That hurt too. I love our D line but when people are holding you you've got to get animated. Spin moves show the holds clearly and sometimes you just need to punch the guy in the atoms apple and yell "stop holding me". If they are going to cheat, you gotta cheat.

Interesting thought about them reading our signals. I think they took advantage of some young guys in the secondary today due to injury. Also I think they took a page out of BC's playbook from last year, hold almost every play and hope you don't get called. It was ridiculous. That is why we couldn't get any pressure. It is really time for the ACC to stand up and stop tactics like that. OUR REFEREES should be the BEST IN THE COUNTRY.

Not much the DL can do against mainly 3 man drops. AS others have said, most of our defensive problems were due to LB play.

UVA averaged 6 punts per game going in to our game.

We forced them to punt once.

I can't blame it all on the defense because we wouid have lost the Boston College, Gardner Webb, & Clemson games if not for their great efforts. If not for their interception giving the offense a short field our offense would have only scored 10 points against UVa-pitiful. Three quarters without a touchdown cost us this loss. If our offense does not start scoring more points per quarter we will get blown out in our remaining games. The two keys to maintaining drives & scoring more points is the dive play to Dwyer & stop the fumbles lost. We must burn defenses with this play so they cannot key on the outside triple option. If the center & guards cannot execute the blocks on this play we are in for more low scoring games against teams that will wear out our defense in the second halves. I hope the defense plays lights out against the Criminoles because we need them to get us 10 points & hold them to 17 points or less to keep us in the game like they have all year in close games.

Yes, but we did get 3 turnovers. They scored on 4 drives. UVA played a masterful game, you have to give them credit. Still, had we not put the ball on the ground on the 5 yard line, we are driving for the win at the end yesterday. IOW, we beat ourselves yesterday as much as they beat us.

I will agree that our offense stunk worse than our defense, but I would like to remind yall that UVA didn't score on UNC until the last minute of regulation in their game.

And we haven't played UNC yet.

Which means squat, as you well know.
