Agree it's probable a tr-fr QB will play. If it's a 3rd stringer, common sense dictates the RS will only come off if the kid needs to play, or if PJ wants reps for the kid/plans to use him more later in the season.

Agree Washington is likely to move.

Have heard from good source Dykes will not be a factor. Can't elaborate. Coaches are grateful for his contributions.

Booker example proved my point perfectly: We need a 3rd string quarterback who is proficient running the offense.

I think it will be interesting to see if someone can beat out Shaw for 2nd string. There were some time when I think he underperformed because of the fact that the only competition he had was from Booker. Now the CPJ is recruiting QB's for the system of a BCS conference talent level, Shaw might get put out. (Big might, but you never know).

I have to say that I think it more likely that Josh gets beat out. Josh's big advantage over Jaybo was a stronger arm and better ability to get out of trouble.

But he only completed 44% of his passes and ASSUMING our OL improves greatly, the scrambling ability will become less important.

Josh took his team to a 9 win season in his first year. That's awesome for Tech. But in the pure option game, Jaybo is better at reading and pulling the ball when necessary. If PJ thinks that the pure option is going to take us further then I can actually see Josh getting beat out.

Watch the Aycock video. He's a high school kid and looks just as proficient as Josh does today. I think Josh has to get better at his reads or he is at risk.

Additionally, Jaybo is a very good #2 quarterback. It takes a different reason for a #2 to be beaten out by a freshman than a #1. (Although Josh could lose his job to a freshman and drop Jaybo down to a redshirt too.)
 
Also, just realized we might not necessarily rs Sims or Aycock if the don't get on the QB depth chart right away. They could also contribute on special teams and later be moved to QB between seasons. What gives me this idea was a comment by ESPN's review of Aycock and the fact that we are recruiting them as Athletes, not QB or RB.

Josh will have had 2 spring practices and a season of this offense under his belt when the freshmen arrive on campus. He has had 2 full seasons to adjust to college "speed". I think its highly unlikely he gets beat out either of the next 2 years. In fact, if Josh stays healthy, improves his accuracy and mesh read just a little bit he will be a "very special" player. Remember, Josh is still learning this system as is the offensive line. I suspect by the middle of 2009 season we will see the full potential of Josh and this offense and forget that we ever had these posts.

I think we have to admit though that it could be just the opposite. Halfway through 2009 we will know if Nesbitt is our man or not (IMO), I'll agree to that.
By the way, unfortunately we will not be playing VT too early in the season. Their entire month of Sept is non-conference games. That'll be pretty weird for them though, nothing but ACC games from start of Oct to end of Nov.

Truthfully, I do believe that it is much more likely that it will happen exactly as you predict. But it is not a guarantee.

I'm wondering if these young hotshots could teach Josh a trick or two about reading defenses from under center. Josh has the tools to succeed he just needs to hone them in my opinion... Obviously that's more of the coaches' job - and CPJ is the best - but maybe he could relate to the material better if he heard it from Jaybo...

Or maybe this is something you either get or you don't (try teaching Intro to CS to an INTA major) and that repetitions are the only thing that can help in that case.

I'd also like to see more of the fake pitch from him (with healthy ankles of course)... But back on topic - I'll be ecstatic if Aycock comes to the flats.
 
It's all about practice (just read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell). Paul Johnson is the best teacher of the option in the world and our guys just need time to learn.

Josh Nesbitt has been running the option for a total of 9 months. Discount that time, since he was hurt most of spring training and much of the season. Jaybo ran it in high school, so of course he's going to be better at the reads. It's not something that you can just watch film and understand. In the next 8 months until kickoff, Josh is going to get alot better at Quarterbacking PJ's system.

For that same reason, we need to do everything we can to redshirt these guys and give them an extra year of practice. Just think of how good at running the option Aycock would be as a RS-Soph starting QB. He will have had two seasons (playing mop-up QB in season 2), three summer practices, two spring practices and two years of weight training and conditioning. Wow! And we are going to keep getting guys like Aycock, Nesbitt, Shaw and Sims every year. That's what depth gives you.

Mike Sewak did this with eventual Division MVP Jayson Foster in his first year. He took him from QB and let him return kicks and play as a WR and A-Back until the following season where he became starting QB.
 
Yeah he will probably get better at running the triple option, but thats not all he has to do. If Nesbitt doesn't improve on his passing abilities then I'd rather have someone in who maybe doesn't run the option quite so well, because a real passing game can make a less well run option work better than a perfectly run one.

It would not shock me at all if Sims wins the starting job this spring.
 
Nesbitt will be the starter. Watch Nesbitt from playing BC, to playing Miami and UGA. He has progressed so much. He makes great reads and can scramble better then any QB. His passing game needs some help, but our offensive line needs to be able to block long enough for him. I agree with redshirting Aycock, He is a beast in this video.
