Dontae Smith coming back for 2023

Dontae Smith and Jordan Mason were two highly underrated RB's of CPJ's last recruiting classes. Those classes include:
  • Jaylon King - DB
  • James Graham - QB
  • TK Chimedza - DL
  • Charlie Thomas - LB
  • Dontae Smith - RB
  • Malachi Carter - WR
  • Quez Jackson - LB
  • Zamari Walton - DB
  • Jordan Domineck - DL
  • Juanyeh Thomas - DB
  • Peje Harris - WR
  • Tre Swilling - DB
  • Kaleb Oliver - DB
  • Mike Minnihan - OL
  • Connor Hansen - OL
  • Tariq Carpenter - DB
  • Jordan Mason - RB
  • Pressley Harvin - P
  • Andonicas Sanders - WR
  • Jack Coco - LS
That's 20 really good players for us the past 4 years.

Not sure how this could be. In years 3-4 of collins tenure with his elite recruiting cpjs players were still better. Gosh. Nothing makes sense.

I mean, older, more mature players being better does make sense. CGC was crap but it's probably not rare for the best players in a coach's third and fourth year to have been recruited by the previous regime.

CPJ had an eye for real gameday talent and work ethic it seems. A lot of his misses that we were in until the end became major stars. Another major contributor over that time would’ve been Mr. Brandon Adams. RIP.

Yep CPJ could recruit! Its false to think CPJ couldn't recruit because a 5 star never committed to him. When you look at our history GT doesn't have a history of recruiting 5 stars, no matter who the coach is. I think we all have learned a valuable lesson via the Clown Collins era.

I wouldn't oversell how good CPJ's recruiting was. It was mediocre compared to most of our competitors.

I take exception to your commonsense post because CPJ "was a lazy recruiter" and "the cupboard was bare". Under those conditions we should have seen sophomores displacing seniors in years 2&3; by year 4 there should not have been a single CPJ recruit seeing the field during meaningful minutes.

I don't think anyone is trying to oversell it; but after 3 years of "the cupboard was bare" being preached by the juice crew, it is interesting to take a retrospective look and realize that the roster Collins inherited wasn't as terrible as he led his followers to believe.

The cupboard was bare. It is still bare. Take the gold glasses off. We get our ass kicked on the recruiting trail.

You are correct. All I ever heard was how CPJ left the cupboard bare while riding out into the sunset.

CPJ would recruit the best athlete/player on teams. That always wouldn’t be the most protectable kids based on size/length. The Jemea Thomas, Julian Burnett, Jamal Golden types. Outside of the 4 star talent, CGC was more likely to take a high school player that wasn’t the best on his team, but had the desired size/length to be developed into an NFL player.

Ok, so CPJ couldn't recruit.
Gef the recruiting guru couldn't recruit.

Patiently waiting for the next narrative. So far it seems like we currently have the 72nd ranked recruiting class but we have some secret recruits or stud portal players ready to announce any day now.

Would any of our OL he left start anywhere else in P5? DL?

Minnihan and Hansen probably would have for several teams; but there is no way to know. DL was in worse shape; but somewhere in the bottom of the P5 one of them might have found a home.

JJacket is still drinking the juice, probably still has a closet full of '404' and 'ATL' gear.
Miss the part where I said "it is still bare"? Our recruiting sucked. It has continued to suck. Selling either coach as having recruited to get us on par with our competitors' level of talent is just plain wrong. We should be recruiting at the same level as Clemson, Miami, and FSU. UNC shouldn't be out recruiting us, ever. None of the former coastal teams should ever out recruit us, except maybe Miami, and we should be right there with them.

Except that obviously wasn't true and that sentiment is covered by my "CGC is crap" statement.
