Dontae Smith coming back for 2023

JJacket is still drinking the juice, probably still has a closet full of '404' and 'ATL' gear.
He's sitting on the patio in Crystal River right now drinking Waffle House coffee from his ATL travel mug.

Nah, got back yesterday. Nice trip. Should have purchased down there when it was cheap about 5 years ago. Real estate is stupid down there right now.

I did like the selfies you took in the river.

CPJ had an eye for real gameday talent and work ethic it seems. A lot of his misses that we were in until the end became major stars. Another major contributor over that time would’ve been Mr. Brandon Adams. RIP.
1. Dontae returning is the best news of the offseason.
2. Brandon was an absolute force. He often dictated double teams. Maybe the 2019 defense would have been better if he had been in the middle of the line. Who knows? But go back and watch the games from 18 and see just how disruptive he was.

Would any of our OL he left start anywhere else in P5? DL?
Go ahead and cherry pick one of the two positions most affected by his system (QB and OL). There was talent everywhere else at DB, LB, WR, RB, and even P. He put about 5-6 RB in the NFL, a crapton of WR, about 4-5 LB, and 5-6 DB. He even put 2 kickers and at least one snapper.

DL we’ve never recruited real well regardless. The only recent exception there was the late 00’s when we recruited 4* Richard and Morgan, hit gold with off the radar 2* Walker, and converted a 4* TE Johnson to DE. Three of the four had good NFL careers and the 4th got drafted, IIRC.

Dontae Smith and Jordan Mason were two highly underrated RB's of CPJ's last recruiting classes. Those classes include:
  • Jaylon King - DB
  • James Graham - QB
  • TK Chimedza - DL
  • Charlie Thomas - LB
  • Dontae Smith - RB
  • Malachi Carter - WR
  • Quez Jackson - LB
  • Zamari Walton - DB
  • Jordan Domineck - DL
  • Juanyeh Thomas - DB
  • Peje Harris - WR
  • Tre Swilling - DB
  • Kaleb Oliver - DB
  • Mike Minnihan - OL
  • Connor Hansen - OL
  • Tariq Carpenter - DB
  • Jordan Mason - RB
  • Pressley Harvin - P
  • Andonicas Sanders - WR
  • Jack Coco - LS
That's 20 really good players for us the past 4 years.

All-ACC honors:

Mason - 2019 (3rd Team)
Swilling - 2019 (Hon Mention)
Jackson - 2021 (2nd Team)
C Thomas - 2021 (Hon Mention); 2022 (3rd Team)
J Thomas - 2021 (Hon Mention)
Walton - 2022 (Hon Mention)

Judge for yourself as to how great that class was.

I take exception to your commonsense post because CPJ "was a lazy recruiter" and "the cupboard was bare". Under those conditions we should have seen sophomores displacing seniors in years 2&3; by year 4 there should not have been a single CPJ recruit seeing the field during meaningful minutes.

Exactly

First, I didn’t say great. Please don’t put words in my mouth. Second, lots of good players don’t get All Conference honors. There is a lot of space between “great” and “cupboard is bare.”

I’m not saying one way or the other. I actually think this is a tough one to call.

That coincides with he increased staff and money TStand put into the program. The stench of Bobinski cannot be overstated.

It also highlights the route J Batt is taking by upping the spending on staff.

Sasquatch's whole existence sat Tech was to make the best MBB hire possible. LOL.

Getting back to the OP, Dontae is one of my favorite RB's now. He persevered and came out of it well.

Thank you Dontae! Glad you are returning to GT. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Not sure how this could be. In years 3-4 of collins tenure with his elite recruiting cpjs players were still better. Gosh. Nothing makes sense.
Jeff Simms looked good for a couple of series against North Carolina once. Man, what a recruiting upgrade Collins was

Good news. Hopefully a great year will get the NFL scouts interested.

The water was cold. It was cold!
I did my scuba certification there. One of the steps was to take off your mask, put it back on, and clear the water from it. When you take off the mask and the water hits your face, just damn, it takes your breath away.

Did mine at Vortex Springs on the panhandle. That's some cold damn water.
