DRad email about GT/UGA game (new stuff)

No, I'm saying the combination of factors involved with a 2011 opener in the dome, those being:

1) UGA home crowd
2) 25 bye weeks to prep for our offense
3) Rookie Tech QB in his first collegiate start
4) Media frenzy
5) Tech has never ever won in the dome
etc

All add up to +6. At least. We can argue about the number, but not the concept. If you don't agree that they add up to +Something then you're freaking dumb. And I see absolutely no reason to give Georgia +Something.

All our goals as a program must be obtained through one thing, beating Georgia. Better recruiting comes from beating Georgia. Better media coverage comes from beating Georgia. More ticket sales come from beating Georgia. Like it or not, absolutely every goal we have as a program flows through beating Georgia. In light of that, I can see no reasonable excuse for giving Georgia an advantage in a football game.

If you don't like that all our goals as a program must go through beating Georgia, then tough. That's unfortunately the row we have to hoe, so lets quit giving them points.

Okay, I do agree that the other factors are big (especially new QB). But imagine that in 2011, on a neutral field, we are 4 points better than UGA. In 2012, we are even.

If the 2011 game is at Tech, we should win by 7 (4 points better, plus 3 for being at home). If the game is at the Dome, we should win by 1.

If the 2012 game is at UGA, we should lose by 3. If it's at Tech (due to 2011 being at Dome), we should win by 3.

Yes, I know point spreads are not exact. But I would take example 1 over example 2 even if it means playing at the Dome. In a vacuum, I see your point. But this series is not ending after 2011.

Why? Explain what I'm missing. I'm not trying to get into a bitching match, but I just don't understand that logic. If that makes me stupid, okay.

You're missing that this game is 100% mutually exclusive to the rest.

You're missing that this game is 100% mutually exclusive to the rest.

Doesn't two things being mutually exclusive mean they can't both be true? I'm not positive, but the way you worded that sounds as if you are saying they don't affect each other, which is untrue. The location of the 2011 game directly impacts the location of the 2012 game (obviously). Anyway, I feel like we have hijacked this thread. Sorry about that.

Look,

2011 through 20gazillion all even out with regards to home and away, as things stand today.

If we do this Dome thing, then 2012 through 20gazillion+1 all even out with regards to home and away.

So the 2011 game stands on its own in terms of whether it's a good idea or not. If they got ANOTHER home game then it'd be even worse, sure, but them getting 2 in a row is bad enough, plus the other factors.

The whole thing sets up to crush our program. We'll be coming off a very likely 10+ win season in 2010, with as many seniors as we'll have, but they'll all graduate and then we throw the whole bunch of rookies into the fire and crucify them at the hands of the media for a few bucks.

I just don't see the logic. All our goals as a program flow from beating Georgia. Why shoot yourself in the foot?

I don't agree that it would be a home game for UGAG at the Dome. I think we'd easily sell out our half of ~ 35K tickets, especially on Labor Day weekend. We had over 50K of the 70K at the CFA Bowl, where we laid the egg, last December. It would be close to 50/50.

Because there are so many other benefits to the game. I am not in favor of the game. But we will get huge exposure (maybe Gameday) and a huge monetary boost to the AA (which can be used on better facilities, coaching salary increases, etc.). Those would positively impact our program. I think this is analogous to people not wanting to trade within their division. Some GMs say if it makes his team better, then he'll do it. Others won't for fear of making the other team better. No opinion is correct, just different.

The issue with this is the same with what was said about 2 thurs night games in a season. Sure we get to show off that the program exists to a lot of people. At the same time we run the risk of giving the world the impression that we suck and that you shouldn't pay us any heed on the national scale. I'm not saying we should avoid all games like that but that is just a really bad time for us.

If Arthur Blank was approached with an opportunity to relocate the Falcons Saints home game this year to New Orleans, spot them 7 points, and get paid a million dollars for doing so, do you think he'd do it? How do you think the Falcons fans would react?

While beating UGA will help (dramatically), all of our program's goals don't flow through Athens.

Beating teams like Florida State, Clemson, Va Tech, Miami, and North Carolina. Making it to the ACC Championship game. Qualifying for a BCS Bowl (likely Orange Bowl for the first time since Dodd retired in 1966).

Media coverage, ticket sales, recruiting will all continue to improve if we did the above things. They are aren't mutually exclusive from beating UGA.

This argument simply doesn't work.

It's pro football and all 32 franchises are on relatively equal footing (revenues/expenses) with TV money & salary cap considerations.

Try again beej67.

We would sell ever ticket we could get our hands for a UGA game at the dome in 2011.

85% of them would be used by GT fans. :)

They're offering to pay us a boat load of money and provide nationwide, primetime exposure against the backdrop of the enshrinement ceremony for the College Football Hall of Fame which they paid a boat load of money to have moved a couple of blocks from our campus. Who wouldn't want that?

If we don't step up and support the ASC here, we no longer have any right to complain about anything they do and should never expect them to try to do anything for us again.

And you guys do realize that there will be a game whether we are in it or not and that Ugag will be in that game. They'll get all the money and exposure as the featured "hometown" team. Their opponent will likely be one of our conference rivals (FSU, Miami, Clemson, etc......) that will jump at the opportunity to play in this game. Can you imagine the outrage if the ASC had announced Ugag vs. "blank" in 2011 without considering us?

It also bothering to me that we as a fan base are developing this mentality that a bye week or extra preparation time for our opponents is somehow a disadvantage for us. It certainly is an advantage to us when teams only have a week to prepare for our offense, but we need to be able to beat people no matter how long they have to prepare if we want to be regarded as a real football power.

This post does make a lot of sense --there's a certain air of SWAGGER!!! about it.

Seriously, I've been thinking this over the past few days and I'm open to possibly changing my mind on it --I've been dead-set against it.

The game might not slot very well for us coming off of a senior-laden squad in 2010.

However - Being in the ACC, we probably need to embrace these media opportunities compared to some of the schools in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12. We need to take some "chances" that other major schools don't necessarily have to do.

Once we get 50K GEORGIA TECH FANS into BDS for 6-7 games a year that want to see GEORGIA TECH play football every game day regardless of the team on the other sideline, we won't have to take as many of these "chances."

+1

Good post JTS!

After thinking about it...let's just play Clemson or VT one of these years....we don't have to do this with Georgia.

Just thinking about their white trash arses in the Dome (WHERE THE SEATS ARE PAINTED RED!!!!!!!!!!!) makes me **** my pants. Every time.

Some good arguments/points by some of you guys have changed my mind - I think. Guess I'm okay w/ it.

You know, for a dude who appears to be a staunch opponent of Hand-Waving-Freakoutery, you're coming off like a whiney douche here.

The 2011 game is going to end our program? Are you serious? Admit it, you're just pulling everyone's leg, right?
