DRad email about GT/UGA game (new stuff)

I posted this earlier in the thread, but because of the discussion Beej and I were having, it may have gotten overlooked, and I did want to get y'all's opinions on it. So, if you agree/disagree, let's hear it.

An interesting question will be about how tickets are distributed.

  • The Dome seats 72,000
  • According to this AJC article in May (LINK), Tech was hoping to sell 30,000 season tickets (assume we did, including student tickets)
  • Assume that all of them were sold to Tech fans - yes, unlikely).
  • Chick-fil-A, the Dome, other sponsors will get at least 4,000 seats, so each school gets 34,000 seats
  • Sanford holds 92,000--assume 80,000 go to UGA fans
  • UGA will have 46,000 fans that normally go to games unable to get tickets

Therefore, we know UGA fans will be trying to buy a lot of our season tickets. They're going to outnumber us, and instead of fighting it, we should capitalize on it. Tech should institute a fee for any first time season ticket holder (with the exception of any students who have graduated from Tech in the last two years). I don't know what the fee should be, but I'm thinking it should be at least $100 (more?). Assuming that UGA fans buy 5,000 of our season tickets, we are looking at an additional $500,000, not including the revenue from 5,000*the price of season tickets. Thoughts?

They're offering to pay us a boat load of money and provide nationwide, primetime exposure against the backdrop of the enshrinement ceremony for the College Football Hall of Fame which they paid a boat load of money to have moved a couple of blocks from our campus. Who wouldn't want that?

If we don't step up and support the ASC here, we no longer have any right to complain about anything they do and should never expect them to try to do anything for us again.

And you guys do realize that there will be a game whether we are in it or not and that Ugag will be in that game. They'll get all the money and exposure as the featured "hometown" team. Their opponent will likely be one of our conference rivals (FSU, Miami, Clemson, etc......) that will jump at the opportunity to play in this game. Can you imagine the outrage if the ASC had announced Ugag vs. "blank" in 2011 without considering us?

It also bothering to me that we as a fan base are developing this mentality that a bye week or extra preparation time for our opponents is somehow a disadvantage for us. It certainly is an advantage to us when teams only have a week to prepare for our offense, but we need to be able to beat people no matter how long they have to prepare if we want to be regarded as a real football power.

Damn, you have me sold on it. Wait - I already was sold on it. Way to lay it out there.

I disagree - GT already sells over 25k in season tickets (not including admin & student tickets which is another 8-10k or more). We will easily sell our allotment of ~30k (after ASC and CFA get their share). Some of those 30k will be sold off to UGA fans but that we already see that happen for home games at BDS@HGF.

If DRAD signs off on this he will have diminished in my eyes.

There are some things people of character just simply will not do regardless of how much money is being wagged in their face.

Tech = character. We ain't hoes. If DRAD does this we are. We're hoes.

Home field advantage is usually worth about 3 points, according to most bookies, as well as according to Sagarin.

The Dome would be at LEAST a home field advantage for Georgia, if not worse. 3 points away from us to them = 6 point swing = touchdown.

We're selling them a touchdown.

As long as they're paying enough for it, I might not mind.
Why? You don't think Tech fans would show up? If that's the case, it doesn't really matter where we play them then.

Please note that DRad hasn't once mentioned money in his reasoning. I'm not naive enough to believe money isn't a factor, but can we please stop acting like Dan is selling out? He wants to get VT/Clemson/UGA off the same rotation, it's a one time deal, and we get to keep our home game the next year.

Everyone needs to grow up and relax.

Ridiculous. If we do it, it's to balance the schedule.

To clarify a point: Does the revenue go to GT or is it shared with the ACC like bowl revenue?

GT keeps the $$$$. This isn't a bowl game (post season).

This year, the ASC folks paid Bama and VT $2.3 million dollars each. That like a 2nd (good) bowl game payout that we would get to keep all to ourselves.

I have read all the reasoning and I am totally in favor.
The POSITIVES far outweigh the negatives. imho

"If we don't step up and support the ASC here, we no longer have any right to complain about anything they do and should never expect them to try to do anything for us again."

Time out here. The current score is GT 1, ASC -1. We bailed their butts out two years ago when we made AMC available for their sec bb t. Maybe its time for them to do us a similar favor, like moving their game to Sunday or Monday. And there is no reason why we have to lick their boots in order to gain the "right" to call them out when they screw over us.

I go back to my original point in this thread.

It appears that the decision has been made as to what we are, and now we are simply dickering over the price. When everything we have is for sale, then it appears that we have nothing of real value. We appear to be ready to grab for something with vague, unquantifiable, and debatable long term results in exchange for a short term rush. Are we really that desperate? What we have now with uga ain't broke, and shouldn't be messed with. There are other ways to "balance the schedule" (if that is necessary, the results of doing so are purely speculative), increasing our cash flow, and meeting our goals of beating uga, winning the acc, and going to and winning a bcs bowl. These ways are long term solutions, not short term "fixes." We ought to be smart enough to figure them out. We are Georgia Tech. Remember, we don't fit the mold, we make it. We tell that to other people and expect them to believe it; we ought to start believing, and practicing, it ourselves.

Wow. Wow. Wow. You sir, put to words everything in my head. Winner hands down. May God have mercy on the souls of those who disagree.

The ACC now has a long-term "balanced" football schedule for each of the 12 teams. I doubt they would even consider any modification to it.

If we were to play a conference team away like Clemson or VT two years in a row, it would be FAR worse then this proposal (UGA game in 2011 at Dome for $2.3 million and 50/50 split on tickets plus plenty of prime-time exposure).

No one's giving up a home game. Series is just delayed.

Sorry for being so stupid but

2009 ugag at GT
2010 GT at ugag
2011 neutral (ugag not at GT)
2012 ugag at GT (suppose to be at ugag) So I guess out of fellowship they will say "yeah, we don't care. We will play 5 at home instead of 6", or however many they have scheduled at home now in 2012.

Don't understand how they are not giving up a home game in 2012.

swofford sucks, he could fix this right now.
