Seriously … ???? I know it’s been 50 years and let bygones be bygones but walking out on you teammates before the UGA game because you are not treated special should pretty much end your name going on an award. Sure, he had a good career and is a letterman and should be welcomed like any letterman, but giving a Most Improved Player Award ???? Nope …… How about using Shawn Jones, John Dewberry, Kim King, or Billy Lothridge.

Have to say I don’t get that one either

Okay guys, time to give this one a rest.

The players on that 1972 team - I was a Student Assistant that year - have moved on from that. I was as confused, mad, and disappointed by my former teammate as anyone, but all the surviving members of that team I run into have, if not forgotten, have forgiven Eddie for what the incident was after the facts came out. Since about one-third of the players from that era are now deceased, we're just glad to see each other "in the vertical."

There was a whole lot of pressure from political folks who had absolutely nothing to do with GT, Eddie, or anyone else associated with that team. It's been well documented who those outsiders are & I'll not repeat their names, but they and the agenda they were using Eddie for are all well known nationally.

On the rare occasions when Eddie comes to a game, I see him in the Letterwinners Section in the North End Zone Club Level. He's usually hanging out with Joe Harris and I always go say hello to both of them. Some of this Award Recognition may even be an effort to get Eddie engaged with the program again.

If the players that were in and around that Locker Room can treat old teammates, even one with a tarnished incident as a 21 year old, with respect after 50 years, isn't it about time the fans do likewise?

I whole heartedly agree … McAshan should be welcomed back anytime, he played a lot of good football for the Jackets. I just don’t agree with the honor of having an award named after him, but you are probably right, best to forget that incident.

The agitators back then are either still doing that kind of crap or have been replaced by others doing the same ole s**t.

I don't know if you ever knew or met Coach Fulcher's brother Sim (he also played at Tech in the 50s), but he passed away a couple of weeks ago.

None of this is in those Georgia Tech Football Vault books.

What should have been a minor disagreement (remediated under normal rules) blown up by politics of the era. Not a statement one way or another.

NO, NO AND NO. Political pressure? Seems odd that there were many black players playing on numerous other teams and none quit on their team, and noteworthy to do it at that time of year prior to the rivalry game. Also recognize no Georgia players quit. The rules are the rules, and Tech could not have given him more tickets he was demanding if they had wanted to. The guy made a horrible decision and it will go down in history at Tech akin to Benedict Arnold. Everyone these days want to "apologize" and move on. This was not a mistake made in the heat of the moment. This was a planned, methodical knife in the back move that he wants to walk back. Tech never ceases to amaze me. We have boatloads of black players who have contributed positively to our athletics deserving of awards, but this is not the one.

Send it to Jeff Sims in Lincoln. By his actions, he is the most worthy of an award named after McAshan.

I had no idea EM was still connected to the program (even if occasionally).

Turbulent times they were.

Time to bury the hatchet.

Well … looks like he got some bad advice. Nothing good has ever come out of a situation that Jesse was involved in. Eddie made a bad choice … choices have consequences. It wasn’t like he was an 18 year old freshman.
