Eddie McAshan

He actually disappeared before practice on Wednesday of that week. A trainer was sent to search for him that afternoon with no luck. It was kept a secret until Friday afternoon when the team was boarding the buses for the trip and one of the managers told a reporter from the AUC that if he was looking for McAshan he wouldn't find him and that "we don't know where he is."

McAshan showed up at about 2 AM at the team motel in Commerce and tried to talk Fulcher into letting him play, but Fulcher told him that that ship had sailed and they would talk about it after the game. Of course he wasn't allowed to play in the bowl game either and that's when Jesse Jackson and others got involved and it turned into something that it never was about. It WAS about trying to get more tickets (that the AA didn't have anyway)than the NCAA allowed.

At the Liberty Bowl, before the game, a couple of fence posts were pulled up and sleeves were installed in the concrete (or asphalt - I don't remember) and with all the protesters at the gate, when the team bus arrived this section of fence was pulled out and the bus drove straight in. There were some type of police (agents, etc.) on the bus with the team. The other black players were asked to wear black arm bands during the game, but they met privately and decided not to.

Eddie was a quiet but friendly person who I believe just made a mistake. By the way, he did play quarterback for the Jacksonville Sharks.

18 yankee you are correct he was given a shot as a QB, waived then went to Jax and played there for a year or so don't remember exactly as I never really followed that league (World?).I did follow #1's career for years but truthfully now I have forgotten most.

the Ga Sports Hall of Fame held a book-signing a couple of years ago for some of the folks mentioned in Tony Barnhadt's book, "Southern Fried Football", Eddie, George Morris from the '52 undefeated NC team, George Rogers, USC's Heisman Trophy winner, with the trophy and a HUGE ring, Ray Goff, many others whom I don't remember, what a collection of talent, talk about feeling humbled!! It was my second time around, first time the book was sold out so I bought a GT cap and had it signed by all, even the non-Tech folks, all gentlemen and good sports, only problem is that my brother-in-law won't let my nephew wear the cap! Eddie seemed like a quiet, nice guy, maybe a little on the small side, but maybe that was because that was because he was sitting near George Patton!

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">He could be the biggest angel on earth Old Foggy, but if he throws 52 INTs over a 32 game career, HE AIN'T gonna be asked to play QB in the pros. I don't care WHAT ERA were talking about.
