Eddie McAshan

As I understand it McAshan was like Reggie Ball but 30 years prior.

Not really. Both had their issues, but the issues weren't similar.

Eddie had twice the arm Reggie did... and Jimmy Robinson at the receiving end.

I must admit, I learned a lot about McAshan will doing the preview. I was totally unaware of his story. I knew about Hollaway at Tenn & the QB up in Minnesota but never knew of McAshan

couple of things: it's pronounced "Mc-SHAN"..can't believe folks are still getting this wrong. He had three ridiculous receivers..can't remember the other two but they were tall white guys IIRC. It was quite a show..they would move up and down the field at will..but turned it over a bunch. Really the first version of the spread.

Jim Owings and Mike Oven. One more thing - we all pronounced it McShan back then but in an interview 10 or 20 years ago, Eddie said it was pronounced "MACushan.

Didn't know that..thanks for the corrections. Yes, I now remember Oven..he was a beast..6-5 ago and could really go get it.

Was a lowly walkon when Eddie was a freshman. I remember him as a marvelous athlete - could throw well with either arm. Probably could have played on the basketball team. He never said much, but if I was a lone 18 year old black kid surrounded by 100+ white guys, some of the redneck variety, I wouldn't have said much either. Remember, this was still the 60's. Regarding the controversy his senior year, I think he got some really bad advice from some of the civil rights types - I seem to remember Jesse Jackson sticking his nose in.

You are correct. Good ole Jessie Jackson got involved.

McAshan was a far better passer than Reggie. If he could have gotten a little of Reggie's fire in his belly...

Owings made the big catches to bring us back in the Rice game. Oven was a tight end I'm pretty sure but Owings was also a big guy. You remember Micah Owings, his son who played baseball here before bailing.

Eddie did let outsiders influence him. He wanted like a dozen extra tickets to the UGA game. Jim Stevens looked bad against the dawgs and we lost 27-7. But Jim played one hell of a game against Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl win 31-30. He started the next year and did OK. Jim was from California I believe and returned to Tech in some capacity a few years ago after a career in the military. I want to say Air Force.

Air Force is correct. At Tech, he was some type of academic adviser after the flunkout fiasco.
