EDSBS Write Up of Our Game

"2. The first halves will be ugly. For dual reasons: because Paul Johnson has to prod and poke the defense to see which part of the option the defense isn’t defending (since you can’t defend all of it all the time,) and because the other defense is working on full glycogen reserves and not gasping and wheezing on Tech’s fifth eight-minute possession of the game. Yes, it was Duke, but the Blue Devils didn’t really let Tech do much in the first half at all, and what they did allow happened only on the outside, not up the middle to Dwyer. "

Anyone care to guess how many 8 minute scoring drives we've had this year?

Very, very few...I read this earlier, and while I liked it b/c it was positive...I feel like it was accurate only if Duke was the only game you watched.

If by "very, very few" you mean 0, then you'd be right. Our longest scoring possession all season is 5.5 minutes (in the VT game) and we've only had 5 scoring possessions (of 24 total) over 5 minutes. The average scoring possession is around 3 minutes (probably under).

He clearly hasn't seen any games other than the Duke game.

In the Duke game, the possession that ended in a redzone fumble was 6:27. There were 3 other possessions over 5:00 (a punt, a FG, and a TD).

Average Tech TD scoring possession so far this year is 2:47. Anybody know what that number was from last year? I can't find the stats to calculate it.

I suspect the 8-minute figure may be a little bit of an exaggeration.

Absolutely, it is but it shows a clear misunderstanding of our offense. This is just as much a home-run hitting offense as any deep throwing team - we had more big plays (20 yds or more) in the first 4 games than all of last year - the Duke game just added several to the tally. The average scoring drive is less than 3 mintues. And we've set a record for the longest running play from scrimmage in our 100+ year history.

Probably because we didn't score last year.

I'm curious, how many 20 yds or more plays have we had this year, and what was the total figure last year? I was telling friends about this stat at the Duke tailgate, but I wished I had numbers to back it up. Where do you find this statistic?

This from an article I posted on ST before the Duke game:

"Georgia Tech's offense already has produced 27 plays of 20 or more yards, including nine touchdowns. Georgia Tech had 11 scoring plays of 20 or more yards all of last season."

I don't know their source for those numbers. Too bad they don't say how many total (scoring and nonscoring) 20+ yd plays we had last year.

Go here http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/playbyplay?gameId=282780059 for a play-by-play recap of the Duke game and you could figure out how many 20+s we had in that game. It's possible you could sift through all the play-by-plays from last year's games to get the numbers you want. Sorry; I guess this wasn't much help after all...

34 so far this season (vs. 7 for our opponents). Check ramblinwreck.com, then football, then Game Notes. If you're a stats dork like me, the games notes is 25 pages of all kinds of random information. See page 6, "Dispelling the myths about the Yellow Jacket Offense".

I can understand Orson's impression when the TOP was GT 38, Duke 22. Before we hit home runs, we were steadily getting first downs and wearing down Duke's defense.

I remember Navy fans' first impression of our offense was how we had 3rd and long while Navy typically got a 3rd and short. The offense does tire out defenses with multiple 3-5 yard drives before hitting a home run ball versus a tired defense. This was just the first game we successfully had the former and not just the latter.

The fanboy responses below the main entry are annoying and don't help.
