Zbiaosdfaosdfuo has to be the most overrated player in college football history. After all the tough boxer crap ESPN was pushing on him I seem to recall Reggie Ball running his butt over and him being a total non-factor.

It may mean nothing but we actually have 3 potential AAs with Choice and Wheeler. Not bad for 27 th best team pre-season.

What a crappy All American list. Did this guy even bother looking much past USC, LSU, and Ohio State's roster? What a joke.

zbikowski was hurt for a majority of last year with a pretty gnarly shoulder injury. he was also forced to play a hybrid LB/S role b/c of Notre Dame's weak front 7... it really hurt his productivity. he should definitely be better this year... but, i still agree, many of his accolades are residuals from his sophomore season since he was so mediocre last year. either way, he should be back at the top of his game this year.

and, i'll get it out of the way, i'm a huge irish fan, but i won't stir up any fights on this board. i just want to talk to some jacket fans about the upcoming game. i'm willing to answer any questions you guys have about ND's team, and i'll make sure all of my posts are respectful. i look forward to talking with you guys =D

I see that Navy is your favorite team. Does this mean that ND is your second favorite? How much do you know about Tech? Will you be at the Tech-ND game? What is your prediction?

I see that Navy is your favorite team. Does this mean that ND is your second favorite?
yes, it does, but it's really close. I'm a huge Navy fan... i come from a Navy family. But, my love for ND is deep too. If ND is having a breakout year, i'll even root for them over Navy -- just to see them get a good bowl.

How much do you know about Tech?
i know a fair amount about GT.... not to the extent that I know about ND or anything, but i know more than the average opposing fan. i know generics (your strengths are your D front 7, your OL, your RB), but i don't know depth chart and such. I actually root for GT when they don't play ND. i grew up in Tennessee and wanted to go to GT for engineering, but when i visited the school, i was overwhelmed by the city -- i didn't like the insanely busy atmosphere, so i didn't go there... but i've always liked the school.

Will you be at the Tech-ND game?
i'll be watching on NBC, heh. i live in Florida, and I have a baby one the way -- I have to save money... but man, i wish i could go.

What is your prediction?
phew, this is where i'm gonna lose friends, lol. i honestly think that this is going to be a close game. i wouldnt be surprised if GT won, and i wouldnt be surprised if ND won. i'll actually do my best to give a full game breakdown in a few days for both sides. in the end, though, i'm going to have to say ND wins in a close one, 17-14.

what do you guys think?

what do you guys think?
I think if you had picked GT to win, you'd have proven you aren't an ND fan. Who picks their own team to lose (other than the Buzzoffers).

You won't catch much flak from this crew - just ignore TechGator when he comes on to bash you. :laugher:

IOM: Tell us some things about ND...their strengths and weakness. Who do you think will start at QB? How is the ND running game? The passing game? Run defense? Pass defense? Experience? Depth? W/L prediction for the season?

As for Tech, we feel good about our running game and think that we may have a passing game even without Calvin. Our OL is deep with experienced players...same with our DL and linebackers. Parts of our secondary are suspect but may surprise. Most of us are very excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity to kick it off against ND again. It's been a long time since we have had this kind of depth and that has come with reduced scholarships. Only real negatives...we are kind of beat up at several positions and our kickoff special team is unproven.

okay, i'll answer your questions as well as I can:

Who will be QB? I think that this question has been so blown out of proportion by the media. they focus all ND reports on the QB, but the diehard fans are actually more worried about other things. it seems that clausen's arm is bothering him as he hasn't really had any zip on his passes in practice. i don't think clausen will start against GT -- i think he will become the starter later in the season, but i dont think weis wants to throw him to the wolves (and tenuta) in the first game of his collegiate career. that leaves us with Sharpley and Demetrius Jones (we call him DD for Double Danger -- pass and run threat -- a nickname he got while in middle school). sharpley is widely acknowledged as the safe bet... he was #2 behind BQ last year while DD was a freshman. he is the only QB who logged playing time last year other than BQ (but Jeff Samardzija actually threw more passes than Sharpley, lol). sharpley is much more accurate than DD, but he's not a flashy QB. he's better than average, but he won't be dissecting any defenses. however, IF the plan is to bring clausen in as the starting QB mid-season, weis won't want to change his offensive packages and gameplans too much, and sharpley is much more like clausen than is DD. DD is an interesting player.... he's got that "wow" factor. DD is the most inconsistent on his passes, but he's still got a good arm with a lot of zip. like i said, he's not as accurate as the other two, but he's not as bad as Reggie Ball. DD is 6'4" and runs about a 4.5 i think, so he is a major scrambling threat. troy smith ran a 4.7 (i believe) at the NFL combine last year. with DD, weis can implement a spread attack, and, with our inexperienced line, we can expect to see the QB have to scramble quite a bit. weis has stated over and over that he wants to pick the QB that will win the game -- not just manage it. i think he means that he wants to take the gamebreaker, which, in my opinion, is DD. in the practices that we've been allowed to see, he always seems to break off some big runs and make some big plays. weis even said that DD makes the most big plays, sharpley manages the game the best, and clausen has the best arm. all things considered, i think that weis will start sharpley... DD will see time in certain sets and formations (ala tebow) i think. but sharpley will bethe starter b/c weis won't have to tweak the offense as much when clausen comes in.

What about the ND running game? the RBs are the definite strength of the team. we have 5 RB's who are just incredible.... all five could start on D1 teams. you SHOULD see a majority of carries go to our 5th year player, Travis Thomas. TT is a very versatile athlete, he's been a stud on ST all 5 years, played LB for us all last year (b/c of pitiful LB depth), and was our 2nd RB the year before that. however, i'm not so high TT. he was a career 3 ypc rusher in his previous years, but all reports are that he has dramatically improved his strength, speed, etc... he apparently is the best conditioned RB on the team and plays with the most passion. he has the leadership quality about him. so, look for TT to get a majority of the carries -- all reports out of camp are that he has been performing EXTREMELY well and that he is light years better than years past. Our second back, James Aldridge is a sophomore. JA was a 5* running back coming out of HS. He averaged 3.8 ypc in mop up time last year when teams stacked the box. he was coming off of a knee injury, so he didn't do too much juking. he's about the perfect balance of size and speed..... 6'0", 222 lbs, 4.4 with excellent vision. he's been 100% since the start of spring, and he's just a big boy. you will see a steady dose of JA as well. There have been high praises coming out of camp on JA, and he will definitely be a threat to defenses this year. Now, on to our freshman... Armando Allen (AA) and Robert Hughes: AA is a 4* RB from florida, and, is, in one word, FAST. he clocked an electronically timed 4.32 at a Nike combine his senior year. I think the thing that stands out most about AA is his balance -- he's not a HUGE back, but he's not a scat back either... he runs through the tackles and rarely goes down on first contact. AA is the most electric back in our corps, and he will be a starting KR as well. you will see AA a LOT... he will prob line up as a slot receiver, a half back, or even a WR.... he has great hands and great versatility. he's nuts, and most irish fans agree that he's by far the best offensive skill player on the team. robert hughes makes me happy. he is a freaking beast, weighin in at 237.... but he's not a fullback -- he can turn the corner on any given play. if you watch the replay from last saturday's open practice, you'll see hughes (#33), run over and around defenders. he's got 4.5 speed and probably the 2nd best vision out of the backs, and it has been said that he has the best hands out of the backs. hughes WILL be our goal line and short yardage back (just an opinion). I won't talk about our 5th RB, Junior Jabbie.... he's just the odd man out since he doesn't excel at anything. it's doubtful that you will see him at all. it's been said that all backs have great hands and are capable of catching anything thrown to them. other than TT (who is a great blocker), i don't know how they are at blocking. regardless, expect a stable of highly talented and dangerous backs on Sept 1. Oh, and the OL this year will be much better than last… they are also big (all starters and reserves average over 300).

How's the passing game? Weis is really excited about the passing game. We lost McKnight (who was far too inconsistent) and Samardzija (who was.... the man), but our top 2 WR's right now have been impressive. David Grimes is only 5'10", but he has good speed, runs precise routes, and will catch anything thrown his way. he has a knack of getting open, and he has made some acrobatic catches in the past. Grimes is our consensus #1 man, and he'll be a tough cover for any corner. Our likely #2 man is George West. West runs a 4.3 forty, but he's only 5'8". West is our deep threat.... he can really stretch out a defense, and he has apparently been tearing it up this fall. Weis calls our two main WR's our "smurfs", but they are the exact size of his 2 main WR's when he won 3 SB's with NE. he's familiar with how to utilize them best. Our #3 WR will likely either be DJ Hord, Robby Parris, or Duval Kamara. Hord ruptured his achilles tendon last year, and it was an injury from which that many thought he would never recover. all irish fans basically wrote him off in the spring b/c he wasn't showing any improvement, but this week, Hord has been a machine. he's really come along well, and he's starting to live up to his 4* HS billing. however, i think you guys will see Robby Parris as our 3rd WR. He's 6'4 and 210 lbs. he's been, in my mind, the most impressive of the WR's in contention for the 3rd WR spot. he catches every ball thrown to him, but he doesn't have top end speed. he's a dangerous threat for jump balls and fades, and he's very reliable. Kamara is a true freshman, but has done nothing but impress everyone since setting foot on campus. i don't think you have to worry about seeing him in the first game, but i look for Kamara to take over the 3rd WR slot midway thru the season. he's a big boy at 6'5" and 225.... all the players compare him to Maurice Stovall. he's going to be a load later in the season. I think you will see a starting lineup of Grimes, West, and Parris. Weis uses TE's.... alot. you will see our TE's get alot of passes thrown their way. John Carlson is probably the best pass-catching TE in the nation. He had more catches per game and yards per catch than any other TE in the nation last year. he would've broken ND's TE records if he didn't go down for 3 (or was it 4?) games. carlson is our offensive stud -- the only proven commodity coming back on the offense. he's the passing game's safety valve. our other two TE's in contention are Konrad Reuland and Will Yeatman. Reuland was one of the top TE's coming out of hs, and is a very very fast TE. he has great hands and great speed and can set a block very well. Yeatman won the NCAA Rookie of the Year in LaCross this past year.... he is a physical specimen. he's 6'6" and 265 lbs, but is very light on his feet. He's not AS fast as Carlson or Reuland, but man, he can run for his size. Yeatman is the best blocker of the TE's, but he's also very athletic, and will be a threat in the passing game. TE is the second most loaded position on the team (imo). of course, the passing game hinges on the QB, but weis stresses that all three QBs are quite capable of running the O. I don’t think you will see as much passing as in the past b/c we will focus more on a power running game, but the passing game is in a lot better shape than most think.

How’s the run defense? i’m not going to be able to answer this one… Corwin Brown (our new DC) has kept his defense under wraps. We know he will be running a 3-4, but we don’t know what blitzes/packages/schemes that we will see from this formation. Our DL is undersized and thin on depth. Our NT, Pat Kuntz, has added some weight, and is coming in at 287 as of right now, but that’s still undersized for a 3-4 NT. He plays with a lot of passion, and always has his motor running – much like an old famous ND NT named Chris Zorich. Trevor Laws is our stud DE, and he will be the focus of most Olines. Our other DL guys are unproven, so it’s a big question mark. The DL is the weak link of the team… but I think ND has an advantage that your offense will have no idea what is coming at them. This will be a whole new scheme and your coaches have no film to research on it… so that may even the playing field a little. However, the key to the game will be to stop Choice. Last year, Choice only ran for 54 yards against the Irish, but it’s safe to assume that GT’s OL and Choice have all improved vastly since then. The 4 LB’s are also questionable. We have one proven commodity in Maurice Crum Jr. Crum is a bit undersized for a MLB (230 lbs), but he is fast, hits hard, and always produces. He’s started for the past 2 years and had over 100 tackles last year. He’s a leader and will be a significant player in the game. Our other MLB spot is up for grabs between Toryan Smith and Joe Brockington. Both have apparently been very impressive thus far and will rotate freely throughout the game. I think you have to worry most about Smith, because he is a big big boy and a hard hitter. Smith loves contact and will be a brute in the middle. MLB spot looks pretty solid. OLB is weak. We have two true freshman pushing for starting positions. Some of our OLB candidates are converted DE’s, and all OLBs are big. The positions are still up for grabs, so I don’t know too much about how it will pan out. I think that the run defense will be much weaker than the pass D, but I also think that ND will gameplan on stopping the run. By focusing on the run, they can dare GT to beat them by passing.

How’s the pass defense? experienced and deep. Weis said may play up to 6 different CBs in the game. We return a healthy zbikowski, and the FS, David Bruton Jr is a monster. Bruton is 6’2, 210, runs like a gazelle and hits like a train. Bruton WILL have a breakout year this year.. he’s been a staple on ST while backing up Ndukwe at FS. Depth at safety is deep and talented. If someone goes down, ND has the depth to substitute without missing too much. Look out for freshman Hunter Smith from Knoxville… he will be on ST in the game… probably one of the fastest players on the team… he’s an all-everything athlete. CB’s are insanely deep and experienced. The starters will be Wooden and Lambert. Lambert is a playmaker… he’s the guy with back-to-back INTs to win the MSU game. While our secondary has been suspect in the past, it was due to lack of pass rush and overly complex schemes. Corwin has simplified things, and this will help out. If the 3-4 can generate pressure on the QB, our secondary will be absolutely solid. Again, defense is the biggest question mark, though… and nobody is telling any secrets… so we will have to wait and see.

Experience? This is an inexperienced team but very talented team. The RB, OL, secondary, and LB will all be better this year. The QB, WR will be worse. The DL is still suspect but appears to be the weakest. Grimes and West both played WR last year… grimes logged more time. Our OL is somewhat inexpierenced, but we have one of the nations best centers in dan santucci. We get freshman phenom, sam young, back at RT, and our guards are big maulers. The OL will be very physical and very well conditioned… they will be a strength. DL returns one starter in Trevor Laws, LB returns one starter in Crum, secondary returns 3 starters… only new one is Bruton. As I said, very inexperienced team, but tons of talent.

Depth? The only place we are thin is at DL. We have a true fresh as 2nd string NT (300 lb ian williams). It’s a major concern for the team. Everything else is deep… especially the secondary and RB.

Prediction: most irish fans see this season as a rebuilding one (no matter what weis says). Hopefully the players don’t see it as such. We have a brutal opening 8 games. MOST people I know are predicting either 7-5 or 8-4. I’m thinking 7-5. the talent is there, but there are going to be a lot of hiccups from inexperience and lack of DL depth. Next year, though… ND has an easy schedule and a lot MORE depth and talent coming in… overall, I’d say 7-5.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I don’t have any insider information to the program… I’m just passing around the general info that is released to the public. But, since I’m such a big fan, I eat it all up.

edit: as of right now, nobody on the team is listed as injured... and nobody as been riding the exercise bike.

Wow, OML. Wow!

Thanks for the super report. It is sure to intensify the Tech fans' interest even more to read your synopsis.

On paper, I have to like your chances and feel good that you rate the game a near tossup.

One more question: How do you compare this year's ND team to last year's ND team on opening day?

On paper, I have to like your chances and feel good that you rate the game a near tossup.

on paper, i think GT has the advantage -- more experience... but i think the intangibles play into ND's advantage (new DC, new offensive scheme, unknown QB). i am worried that GT will be able to run straight up the gut of the 3-4 and set up massive PA Fakes. that's the thing i'm most worried about. i think that if TC has a big game, GT wins. if TC is stuffed, ND wins. ND has a lot of talent, but i don't look for it to bloom until later in the year. GT is definitely catching ND at the perfect time (with the exception of the new defensive scheme). it's definitely a tossup, but i've had dreams two nights in a row about watching the game, lol. both dreams had GT winning at some point in the game by a rather large margin .... lol, hopefully my dreams don't come true.

One more question: How do you compare this year's ND team to last year's ND team on opening day?

i think the teams are night and day. last year, the team got cocky heading into the season since the media basically inflated their heads all offseason. the OL was out of shape (and remained so all season), there was no position competition at all (so starters were never pushed to get better), everyone was returning in a familiar offensive scheme.... this year couldn't be more different.

Weis is playing the RESPECT card to the players to get them fired up. media outlets are saying that they have never seen irish practices so fired up and so intense.

Corwin Brown has invigorated the defense. schemes have been simplified and players are apparently running wreckless on the field instead of playing tentative.

the team has more raw talent and more depth than last year, but a LOT less experience. apparently position battles will be taking place all year long. weis said that the past two years he didn't have the depth to yank someone out of the game if they were doing bad, but now, he has the freedom to do so.

the kicking game still sucks, though. i wouldn't expect weis to try many field goals. in open practice, the kickers went 6-14.

------------------------

the best practical breakdown is this:

ND was a passing team last year but will be a power running team this year.

ND's defense was suspect last year, and there is no reason to believe that it will be any better since the DL is still very very weak.

more talent, more depth, much less experience than last year.

most irish fans see a 7-5 or 8-4 season... i'm leaning toward 7-5, but wouldn't be surprised to see 5-7... or 9-3 for that matter. it just depends on how well the players can gel.

WR's are much smaller but much much faster.

OL is bigger, leaner, and stronger.

TE position remains a strength for the team.

secondary is now the strength of the D (oh boy...)

irish fans are REALLY excited about this season since there are so many unknowns heading into the season. almost all of our opinions are formed from media reports and coaching interviews, but weis is keeping 99% of the information on lockdown. the defense ran plain vanilla sets against the O in the open practice, and the O ran basic screens, slants, and runs between the tackles.

in the end, though, i'm going to have to say ND wins in a close one, 17-14.
You must be delusional if you think that we will only score 14 points w/ 007. I don't care how high you grow that god damned grass; it is not going to prevent us putting 20+ points on your lousy defense.

Here's a tip for you; just watch the 2005 Auburn game, the 2005 scUM game, 2006 scUM game, and even our losing effort last year against UGAy and you will slowly learn that any first year starting QBs will be pummeled all day by JT's D.

You got lucky last year because we had a lousy OC; even our D confused your pussy QB Quinn and he was a Senior!

GT 31 ND 10

such hostility. lol. you, my friend, are an intense person. i think your eyes may have even been bugging out of your head as you were typing.

regardless, it's my prediction, and you can disagree with it. only time will tell who is right.

IOM: I think you may have been warned about TG before by another font. TG is one of our most loyal and ardent Tech fans. He reminds me a little of "Curley" in "City Slickers." Remember the words at Curley's funeral, "Lord, we give you Curley. Best not to piss him off." :D
