ESPN Top 25 for 2006

Excellent! We still have a good chance to beat ND. Us being ranked anywhere has guaranteed a loss the next week.

I spoke with a buddy of mine today who is a ND fan. He's really worried about the game. He said that their OL will be a question mark, and their D sucks. He claims that if you did a study you would see that ND's D gave up every QBs best game last year. I'm sure he's exagerating but he's not confident they will be able to stop us. I guess we'll see real quick if we're going to have an offense or not.

the Notre Dame game seems to be a reach for me. I think Brady Quinn will have a field day against our revamped secondary. Their defense may stink, but if we are in a shoot out situation with a good team we will lose. We don't have the firepower. Actually, We do have it...We just don't use it.

Reggie Free in 12 months!!!

Actually I think our seconday will be more athletic and faster than this years. Our safeties gave up quite a few long tds this year because of their lack of speed. Having a Djay, Jamal, Word, etc. on the field should help our pass coverage.

AP, I like the way you are thinking about our defensive backfield for '06. There is no question that middle of the field deep was our blind spot in '05.

If like you say we have speed and athleticism at safety spots this year we will be able to take away that seam leading to heartbreaking slant touchdowns.

We will definitely miss EH and Gerris, but I think we will have a monster D that won't have to blitz as much. I look for a huge year for KaMichael Hall. If everyone has his motor, our D will be just fine.

I don't expect anything different out of our offense unless personnel change is made. I can only hope.

Who do y'all think will be the SS replacing Reis? DJAy will be free, but who is strong?

I believe our interior DLine will be as strong as it ever has been. I think EH will be our biggest loss, but it will give Roberson, a guy I really like, a chance to shine. I would also like to see what all the hype is about with Michael Johnson. LB will be just as good, but will be more of a group of headbusters looking for big plays with Guyton, Hall, and Wheeler manning the spots. Corners will be just as good, but will have more big play ability now that Davis is gone. Davis was very good in coverage and often seemed to be close to the right place, but lacked some of the tools to make the plays others might have. The Safeties are very much unproven.

All in All, as long as we can keep getting quick/athletic defenders and Tenuta can keep getting the players to buy into his system we will be a staple in the top 25 Defenses in America.

I'm not as worried about our safeties as some I guess. I think the key will be getting to Quinn. Nobody stopped ND by covering their receivers...simply put if Quinn has time to throw he will beat you. We need to take advantage of the new starters on OL for ND and keep Quinn on his butt.

Re: Safeties

I am glad that they (our safeties) will be faster in '06 but just as importantly they had better be able to lay a hit on someone and wrap up. No doubt that Reis and Landry could lay the wood to someone. They were monsters in run support.

I've never been sold on Adam Oliver as a "top flight" pass Rusher, but he is fair. Michael Johnson has the build of the two NCState DEs of this year, but lacks in both experience and needs to add weight. I think Roberson will be very good if he can put on 20-40 pounds, but the weight, just doesn't want to come. I am optomistic that the DE in 2 years will be the strength of our Defense.

ncjacket I agree. I think our secondary will be fine. And I agree our best and likely only shot to beat ND will be to get to Quinn. I believe our biggest loss on D is Gerris Wilkinson by the way, but I'm looking forward to seeing Guyton play. He did well in the Auburn game when KaMike was out for a while.

Obviously, your ND friend didn't catch that awesome Emerald Bowl where we got our you know whats and then some handed to us by a lowly 6-5 Utah team using their backup qb. Otherwise, he may be licking his chops to watch his team play us..vs worrying.

Maybe he DID catch the Miami and Auburn games.

I told you what he was concerned about and it has nothing to do with any particular game. He knows what happened in San Fran but he also knows what happened at Miami. Evidently, unlike you, he understands that you can't predict anything off of one game. He isn't afraid of the game but he's concerned about whether ND improves at all on defense because if they don't Quinn will have to outscore every team on their schedule.

Trying to compare the Emerald Bowl to playing Notre Dame is silly. A good number of our players didn't want to be there. They will definately be up for Notre Dame and the fact that it is the season opener.

If you are saying our players did not play hard because they didn't want to be in that bowl game, that's another indictment of the head coach, whose job it is to get them up for every game. Besides, didn't he himself say that the team did not give up?

I didn't say the players didn't play hard. I said that they didn't want to be there especially the seniors. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink it. I think CPH understands that after today's game.

...I guess those guys didn't want to be in Athens that past few years or our own stadium against Ugag this year or vs NCST..and definitely they didn't want to be in Blacksburg...and so on and so on. Coaching is about leadership and preparing the team. Gailey has proved inconsistency is his middle name.

Y'all continually talk about Chan not getting the team up for games, but I don't think that is Chan's responsibility. Chan should prepare them to win as far as smarts and gameplan go, but emotion should be up to the team leaders. When I played in high school for a very good Carrollton Trojan football team, our coach would tell us what he thought and would tell us how we planned to approach the game and then we would have a coach speech by an assisstant for motivational purposes, but then the Seniors and best players would try to get everyone pumped up. I think the problem is a lack of Senior leadership before lesser opponents. The players have ultimately got to get ready to play...the coaches don't suit up.

uhh, Dude we played good against

UGA last year and this year. Only last second brainefarts by Reggie kept us from winning or tying those games at the end.
