Since GT1992 mentioned expectations for this upcoming season in the other thread let's discuss what our expectations are. I'm sure some of you won't answer to leave yourselves wiggle room at the end of the year.

In this, the sixth year of Gailey, I expect a top 25 finish and a win over the Mutts.

Edit - Some clarification is in order. This is not what you believe will happen. We are setting the bar here. ie, "Anything less than _______ would be a disappointment."

I expect 8 wins, and will be happy with 9.

40% chance of beating UGA.

Well, Gailey has never beaten Ugag the whole time he has been at GT..even when they had a down year with a true frosh at qb and we supposedly had one of our best teams with a senior qb and the best player in the country last year in CJ. So, there is no reason think that a win will happen this year..unless you simply believe in statistics and think we're due for a win just because its been so long...

This is going to be a season to remember. Undefeated with a National Championship!

Go Jackets!

I expect and feel confident that our boys will beat UGA, Virginia Tech and will win the Coastal Division. Anything less would be an underachievement, IMO.

This isn't a prediction. This is your expectations. We're setting the bar here.

Still waiting on GT1992, geeteelee, ContactBuzz, hiveredtech, et al. Throw your cards down, gentlemen.

No lower than 2nd in the Coastal, I think we'll beat VT but Ill be content if they're our only ACC loss. Beating the mutts is a MUST, this crap ends now.

My expectations:

Start off with a clear win over ND. The point spread doesn't matter. Control of the game from start to finish is what I'm looking for.

Next, we need to be hosting VPI with no more than 1 loss. I can accept ONE loss from BC/UVA/UM. VPI is a very winnable game. I EXPECT a win to clinch our division.

Two wins before facing the Mutts.

Here is where I will differ from most on here. I would LOVE to whip Uga at home. It would certainly boost our ranking heading into Jax, but I'd still be satisfied with the season with a CLOSE loss. A blowout would piss me off royaly and all other expectations can be thrown out the window.

Finally, a win in JAX for the ACC championship. That would pretty much decide the bowl we receive - no need for an expectation there.

To summarize:
Record - 10-2 (1 loss to UVA/BC/UM and 1 loss to VPI/UGA)
Division Champs
ACC Champs!!

beat UGA and ND and go to a respectable bowl. Win the games we should. 9 win season. Lot of good teams this year. Don't see a NC.

First of all, the end of last season was a disappointment. The way we lost two ultimately winnable games against UGAg and Wake was disappointing. Still, given all of that, I don't think a disappointing season (or stretch during a season is a firable offense for a head coach). I chalk up being disappointed as being a sports fan - it's the disappointing times that make the successful times all the more special.

I'll answer 2 questions here - I think you're asking 1 thing but really mean another.

The answer to what you asked - I will be dissappointed if we miss out on Jacksonville AND extend the losing streak to UGAg. I think we have the talent and depth (at most positions, not all) to have a successful season.

The answer to what I think you mean (what will it take for me to want Gailey gone). A sub .500 season with some of the characteristics of Gailey's first couple of teams (large blowout losses or a "D00k" loss, basicly any sign of the team giving up) or mutiny on the team. I don't see mutiny happening given the character level of the guys that Gailey and staff are bringing in. The overall team depth now should prevent any of the bad losses like we had in his first couple of seasons (and depth -especially on the lines- was the problem then no matter how much anyone wanted to blame the coaching).

No. A realistic person who doesn't have an anti-Gailey agenda would understand that past performances are not an indicator of future performances.

We have the biggest, deepest, most talented and experienced O'line we've ever had who will give the QB, who's in his 4th year in the system, excellent protection, we have a Heisman candidate running back with experienced and talented backups behind him.

We have Jon Tenuta and a defense that returns 9 starters.

We have the best punter in the country.

We have the best recruiting class in the history of GT, many of who have already been in school and working out with the team and many who are simply too good to redshirt and will contribute to special teams if nothing else.

Well, just excuuuse me if I'm optimistic. I just refuse to wallow in the self-inflicted misery that you Gailey haters seem to enjoy so much.

10 wins, minimum. ACC champions with a shot at the NC with a few breaks.

This question is simply about expectations. Your first answer is what I'm looking for. Just trying to get a handle on everyone's thought processes here.

Some of the posters whose opinions I'm most interested in haven't presented themselves yet (law_bee, hiveredtech, GT1992).

I think we will be very good if we stay healthy. We probably have more depth but still never enough. Last year, we may have sneeked up some folks in a weak conference. Even so, I think we could've, should've, would've won the ND, UGly, WF and WV games for an utterly fantastic season.

The conference may be better this year. Losing Calvin is huge. We figure to be no better in the defensive backfield with the loss of Kenny. The QB position is paramount. We won't be sneeking up on anyone...to the contrary, we'll be the ones on the hot seat this time and we had better not get cocky, even against Duke.

Summing up, I think this will be a very good team that needs to stay healthy and play hard for 60 minutes every game if we are to exceed last year's record. If Taylor becomes the second coming of Godsey, I can visualize an offensive machine that keeps the defense rested while the offense marches up and down the field. Finally, as always, we need adequate special teams play. This year I think we may get it.

OK knox,

I expect the team to win 9-10 games and play in the Gator or Peach Bowl. With the talent returning, I would not be satisfied with less than 8 wins.

However, I still don't think that we can fire Chan until he misses a bowl game because it would be impossible to find a coach willing to take a job with the lack of resources (# of fans, $$$, recruiting limitations, etc.) that GT has along with the expectation being that making a bowl game is unacceptable. We would be choosing between everyone else's leftovers and that hot defensive coordinator at Notre Dame. We know how that turns out.

As I said in the other thread, Chan is the coach this year. We have to get behind the team for now. Bitching and moaning do not accomplish anything AT THIS TIME.

GeeTee, I'm not a gold colored glasses Gailey supporter. I just know when it doesn't pay to expend the energy and when it does. Now is the time to be behind the team. And if they go to a BCS bowl and beat UGA, I won't have to backpedal from my statements.

We seem to be a good underdog team. We play up to some teams that according to the ratings, should bury us.

I'm thinking we will have a proud year this time with 9 strong wins, maybe 10. VT will want revenge big time but Maryland will too. UGA is the one to beat if we only could win one game.

Samford is the one that worries me the most. I detest playing these kind of games when we're liable to get some good players hurt for nothing. Bring on the Alabamas and the UTs in place of this game.
We'll finish in the top 25 for sure unless some unforseen tragedy happens.

I expect a win over ND and UGA and then the rest will be gravy.

That's a little bit of an overstatement there GEETEELEE, I'll give you the best/deepest line since Gailey has been here; but not ever.

Still, I'm optomistic about the season and think we have good shot at going back to Jacksonville.

I am surprised that most here are so confident about the VPI game. I was at the Thursday night game a few years ago when VPI crushed us in the 4th quarter as Tenuta's defense folded up like a cheap tent. I think we can win the game; but I don't share the confidence most seem to have. I think we can loose that game and still go to JAX; but I hope we don't have to count on others to get us there.

2000's oline may have been as talented, but I don't think they were as big. Maybe as deep.

1990's oline may have been as big, and possibly as talented, but certainly not as deep. We were extremely lucky with injuries that year (as any team must be to win a NC).

1985's oline was as deep, perhaps deeper, but IMO didn't compare with today's size and talent combination.

I just can't think of any others that would come close.

OTOH, I have been known to engage in hyperbole on occasion. ;)
