This topic was posted over on another site and I thought I'd post it here. I'd love to hear what people think.

What are your expectations of GT football on a reasonable level? Not just what you want to see (10 National Titles, lol) but realistically, what are your expectations?

I'd say for Tech to be a consistently good and respected team. I don't mean consistent from a Chan Gailey perspective but consistently ranked. Consistently in contention for the ACCCG, consistently winning 9 or more games each year, and consistently winning bowl games.

I believe these things are more than achievable with CPJ and company running the show...

Heck, throw in a National Title appearance/ win and I would be ecstatic.

What say you?

As long as things continue the way they are going, I expect us to get to the point where an 8 win season is considered an off year.

I think to get a good understand needs at least two years. However, given CPJ track record, he'll age this program like a fine wine. I think he can at least be the coach to lead us to a NC once in a blue moon during a magical and spectacular year.

Also, I think most of the times we might have bad years will be ones where there are actual reasons for it. For example, say we just graduated a ton of our talent and have to put in a bunch of newbies. Or say that other ACC teams have gotten their players to a peak on a certain year. I don't think our coaching staff will cause a bad year in then next 5 years.

In two or three years we will know if he is the one to take us to the next level like Bobby Bowden, Pete Carrol, or Urban Meyer.

That's a double edge sword. It's fine as long as the fan base won't clamor for a head coach firing if we don't do that.

I only mention because the same thing happened after Bobby Dodd stepped down as HC. I think that might be part of why we could never get back to that level (until now perhaps :D)

I agree with this and add to it.....

-be considered a contender for the ACCCG every year.
-win the conference 1 out of every 3 years
-perennial Top 20
-each graduating class have at least one year where we're in MNC contention

Reasons this is acceptable expectations:

-We are located in the best recruiting grounds in the country (FL & GA).
-We are in Atlanta (there is plenty to do on the weekends).
-We have tradition (4 MNC's)
-We are in a BCS conf
-We play Thursday night game every year (ESPN pub).
-Facilities (Our stadium may be small, but our weightroom, housing, locker room, players lounge are top notch).
-A degree from our school is valuable if you get injured or NFL doesn't work out.
-Ga State and Midtown have plenty of HOT women!
-CPJ

I have discovered that when it comes to GT football....

I enjoy it a lot better when I have NO expectations.

My expectations are simple enough. One, maintain a classy and well run program that gives the Institute the credit it deserves. Two, beat ****ing Georgia.

I feel a little bit sorry for FSU fans. Can't even meet those two expectations for the next couple of seasons.

You won't feel sorry for them if they beat us in Tallahassee next year.

I'll play:

  1. Kids play hard and never give up.
  2. No/few discipline problems (always some, as with general population).
  3. No/few failouts (always will be some as with the general population).
  4. We have a chance to win every game we're in.
  5. Usually measure up to expectations when we're supposed to be good, and exceed them when we're supposed to be down (Much like VT).
  6. Top 35 recruiting classes, with occaisional classes like 07.
  7. Always competing for division and conference championships.
  8. In MNC picture at least 1-2 times per decade
  9. Exciting football to watch where I feel our team played intelligently and gave all they had.

1.) First and foremost, at a bare bones minimum split with ugag.
2.) Win the ACC every 4 years (much less important than # 1).
3.) Make a legit run at MNC every decade (accomplishing #s 1 & 2 will take care of this).

Did I mention that #1 is very very important!?

Hmm perhaps, but then I think that would be the one loss I'm kinda willing to take. IMO they are the best team in the Atlantic division and will prolly win it next year. Also, if we do lose, we can continue the trend of the Atlantic champ beating the Coastal champ in regular season then loosing in ACC champ game ;)

I would like to be in the position VT is right now. Nine or 10 win seasons, and always in contention for the ACC title.

Realistically, we should hold our own against UGa. Part of the equation will be us pulling our weight in in-state recruiting. That will bring us up and bring Uga down.

1. Maintain Bowl Streak
2. Beat UGA about 1/2 the time.
3. Compete for Division Annually.
4. Compete for Conference every 3 years or so.
5. Compete for MNC 1 or 2 times a decade.
6. Play clean.
7. Develop good men.

"Compete" means to feel like they have a chance as the season approaches its end, not necessarily playing in THE MNC game for example.

was going to post but may as well just second El Techero

One other thing to add - you can expect them to COMPETE for certain things but expecting them to WIN is also dependent on what the other team is doing. I'd like to always either see them be heading towards something better with a young team (like this year) or competing at a very high level with a mature established team (like the next two years hopefully). All I don't want to see is an older team that is just sort of bleah.
