Eye opening stat

We got outcoached. You know the old saying "there's holding on every play in the NFL," well BC's new NFL coach told his O line to hold on every play, and the refs would only call about half of them. Clearly .. they can't call a hold on every play.

So TA NU TA blitzed more, and more, since that's the only defensive adjustment he knew, and left our guys with less and less cover support, so BC would take a penalty or two and then complete a 30 yard pass to more than compensate for the penalties.

I expect our defense to be good next year. I don't know how good, but good. Tenuta was an excellent coach, but I think he was the second best in the league the past few years (Bud Foster was the best).

But football is a combined effort. Part of our offense stinking the past couple of years was by design. Our O took very few chances. We played field position ball. It was part of our defensive strategy.

The only time we deviated from that was Reggie's last season. I'm pretty sure that was also our worst year for total defense under Tenuta.

So the question for next year isn't just how good is our defense, but how well does it mesh with our offense.

But getting 4 and 5 star players never hurts:biggthumpup:

Or holding on to the ball. There I said it. Shooting ourselves in the foot more than twice a game this coming season will 'hurt really bad.' Ball control and time of possession, keeping Wommack's D fresh and/or rested, this will be the most critical issue, imo.

We could have a surprising season but don't be too surprised if it turns out to be more of a learning experience. Our feature back will prolly be the guy that can hang on to the ball whoever that might be. I certainly don't see CPJ doing the same thing over and over again. An emerging star perhaps?

If they would have called about half of them, BC would've probably been held to 10 pts or less. The problem was they ONLY CALLED HOLDING ONE FRIGGIN' TIME (well maybe twice, I don't remember). That game was the most blatant holding I ever remember and it was simply ignored. The reffing was atrocious. It was a fantastic strategy by BC, but the refs shouldn't let cheating completely take over a game like that.

Excellent post with which I completely agree.

Not sure what's different about next year and the past in those terms. We all think we've been a ball control, TOP, limit turnover kind of team in the past. But we really haven't. Our best TOP for the last 3 years was 31.49. We have never dominated that stat. We have bounced around in terms of TO margin as well. In the past 4 years we've been best in the conference and we've been worst. That's why our offense next year doesn't really concern me. I don't see this as any different from any year during Chan's tenure, except I have more confidence that we will find ways to score than I have in the past.

The reason our offense next year doesn't concern me is there's nowhere to go but up.

BC dominated us on both sides of the ball. No amount of holding calls was going to change all that. You're fooling yourself if you think the refs made us lose that game. We just weren't all that good last year.

If they called every hold, they'd have never scored. That said, nobody ever calls every hold, which is why their game plan (cheat to win) was a good game plan. You can't take anything away from BC for it. Our team, in order to win, must not rely on the refs. That goes for all sports.

No we weren't all that good. But, you're fooling yourself if you think I ever said the refs made us lose that game. You completely missed the point.

Here's the point. We were good on defense. 20'th ranked defense in the nation last year with one of the poorest passing offenses in the nation. (Aside to say that the refs greatly affected the effectiveness of our DEFENSE in the BC game last year). If we can SOMEHOW figure out a way at Georgia Tech to pair a top 20 defense and a top 20 offense at the same time, then we will have something great - a top 10 team. We had a top 20 defensive coordinator and lost him. I believe Johnson has great potential to build a top 20 offense. I hope to God that our current defensive direction maintains our elite defense or makes it better. CDW has my vote of confidence for 2 years, but it is still my greatest concern at this point for the aforementioned reasons.
