Fake pitch

I was wondering if the fake pitch (or 3rd option) is under the "to be implemented" category on this offense. The fake pitch is not a designed play, but rather a decision the QB would make when deciding if he should keep it or give it to the pitch guy. I remember watching Nebraska when they ran the option so well, they had a lot of fake pitches where the QB would keep it. An example of a situation where I think a fake pitch would have benefited us was with about 10:42 left in the 3rd quarter. I was re-watching the game footage and noticed on the replay that the QB/pitch guy on defense immediately darted out to the pitch when Josh began to pick up his arm to pitch it out to the 3rd option. Anyone who has the game footage should check this out and tell me what you think.

Did CPJ mention anything in particular about what is too be implemented, because I know that he said his entire offense isn't completely in place just yet? Our offense is awesome as is, but I am just throwing around some ideas here.

Good question, my guess is that part of the answer is that Josh has had no wheels lately, maybe when he is in better shape to run we might see this type of thing.
 
I saw the same thing.

This will just come as Josh gets more comfortable running the option. Moves like that happens when the game slows down for you and you have a lot of confidence.
 
I saw the exact same thing you did. The linebacker was flying to the A-back, and the safety's hips were already turned towards the sideline so he would have been screwed if Josh had faked it. That probably would have been a touchdown.
 
Josh pulled that move against Miss State before he got hurt. If I'm not mistaken, it was the exact play where he got hurt.

If Josh's ankles were good, he probably tries that. I glad Josh used his players more to help himself get through the game. He didn't look good at all walking between plays during that game.
 
Josh has done that this year on occasion. Did it a couple times vs VT.

I'm not so sure we need to be doing the 'fake pitch' when the real pitch is working so well, though. hehe.

He did a few fake pitches in the second summer scrimmage too. One made Derrick Morgan do a 360 then fall down. It was sick.

It's good to hear that he has done it before. I can't wait to see that in action. I am getting giddy just thinking of how dynamic our offense is becoming.
 
I've heard from a couple Navy and GSU guys that is 100% in the "to be implemented" category. We should see much more of it next year.
 
Remember the ball was wet on Saturday. To do the fake pitch well, the ball needs to be on the verge of being pitched and taken back at the last moment.

But yeah, there was another play I saw where Roddy had nothing but daylight if Nesbitt decided on pitch instead of dive. We still have a lot of potential with this offense.

2nd quarter, about 6 minutes left in the half right? Man, that was a TD waiting to happen. When CPJ says we still "aren't very good", that's what he's talking about. He's saying the score should've been 59-42. :biggthumpup:
 
Remembering the old wishbone under Pepper, it seemed the QB always ran with the ball in both hands swinging it from side to side. The effect was like a continuous fake, until it was actually pitched.

There were also a lot of last second pitches as the QB was tackled, dangerous but effective as the defender was fully out of position by that time.

I don't recall how frequent, but I also remember downfield pitches when the QB waited until well past the line of scrimmage to lateral to the pitch man.

Of course, in the wishbone the featured backs were always the halfbacks rather than the fullback or B back. They never ran a pitch play to the fullback as we do often in Johnson's offense.

Nesbitt also missed some open downfield pass plays that I hope he starts hitting next year.
 
There was at least one time where both defenders were shading towards the A-back (I think it was Roddy) and Nesbitt made the pitch anyway. I remember seeing the replay and thinking "If he fakes that, that play goes for at least 15."
 
Josh hasn't had his burst since the FSU game....maybe even earlier.

Yeah, its scary how good we COULD POSSIBLY become.
