This is like, in a conversation about red wine, saying you like cabernet, pinot, and sangria. The first two are red wines, albeit vastly different. SoCo is a recreation of a bourbon-based cocktail that is believed to have been created in New Orleans, though. Bourbon, oranges, cherries, etc. marinated together for a few days and then served over ice. Although whiskey-based, it is not a whiskey.
I'm not trying to be an ass, just a technically-minded engineer aiming to educate fellow alumni.
Now to be a snobby dickish type:
For me, in this post about whiskey, I have a hard time seeing people compare bourbons with tennessee whiskeys (Jack), scotches with irishes, etc. I understand they are all whiskies, but the variations between all of these are so vast.
Compare Woodford and Maker's if you like. Compare Bushmill's and Jameson. Compare Chivas with Johnnie Walker or Glenlivet with Glenmorangie.
You really cannot compare Woodford and Bushmill's, for example. You would be better off simply comparing Irish to Bourbon.
So - my favorite type of whiskey? I like them all up with a couple of finger-drops of water; but it probably goes Scotch Single, Scotch Blend, Irish, then Bourbon.
My favorite brand? If the company is satisfactory, any legitimate brand will do. Chivas, Jameson, and Woodford Reserve are often seen mingling in my liquor cabinet. I like to buy in bulk.
An associate of mine and I had a great business discussion over a bottle of Glendronach. That was fun. It is not often that business meetings end up with the participants actually singing the blues. When it happens, it is priceless, though.
Wow! A true dark liquor conniseuor(sp?)! Thank you for clarifying the SoCo topic for these folks. SoCo is a liqeour(again, sp?) not a liquor. Didnt know it had cherry flavoring though, just thought it bourbon and orange.
I don't know that anyone who drinks Southern Comfort should be regarded as a connoisseur (correct spelling since you asked ;)) of anything other than the waste infested waters of New Orleans. No offense, but SoCo is terrible.
