The situation with faculty is really twofold: first you have a group of people with little connection to the traditions and athletics of the Institute.
Second, you have to understand why people go into academia. There are obviously tens of thousands of reasons, but one of the top 3 is to prove you're smarter than other people. The propensity of people with that mentality and the activity of spending most of your time educating people who inherently know less than you breed a culture of elitism. Someone with a mentality of "I'm a genius and everyone else is a bumbling yokel" is the same one that says "I must protect people from all of the bumbling yokels who will inherently mistreat them out of ignorance."
