Here's a proposal, just to get reaction.

Chan - HFC
Jon - DC/DB
BJM - LB
Giff - DL
Geoff Collins - DT or ILB or TE + RC
Geis - OC/QB
Hunter - WR (& TE if not Geoff)
Modkins - RB
Joe D'A - OL
Kelly - ST

Opening for Dir Player Personnel

So you're saying fire Nix and give Geis the OC job? Why?

1. Don't put words in my mouth.
2. Geis has sound quarterback teaching experience, and knows what we are doing offensively and if we need an OC and if we don't get Coker or somebody, he can slot in and we won't lose momentum. He's a stopgap, but I think we would lose too much corporate knowledge if we lose both Nix & Geis in the same off-season.
3. The important thing here is to get Geoff Collins on the field in some capacity. He was instrumental in the very fine 2000 class (D Smith, K Fox, to name two) and is instrumental in the monstrous 2007 class. We let him go last time, and I don't want to do it again.
4. If we get Coker or someone as OC, and feel he's not just resting in a parking place for a year or two, I'm okay with replacing 3 or 4 offensive assistants.

Nix planning on going somewhere or something? Has his performance been that great this year that he is going to jump ship for a bigger job, or you suggesting we "let" him go?

Tulane is supposedly interested in Coach Nix for their head coach opening. According to Gailey they haven't even talked to him yet, though, so this is all very premature.

Whatever happens, I don't want Coker anywhere near our program.

Disagree.

Coker can run an offense.

I would love to have John L Smith as OC, but I guess that's a pipe dream.

I have nothing against Larry Coker. No man should have to deal with what he put up with down there.

I don't see Chan making any coaching changes in the offseason. I would love to get Joe Hamilton in as a graduate assistant/QB coach, though. Word round the campfire is he's about done with his degree.

But do you really think Coker would take a step down from the Miami HC to the OC at GT? No offense meant to GT, but seems like quite a step down. I would think he would be able to get another coaching job at a smaller name school if he wanted...Also, would we even be able to afford him if he wanted to?

The other way to look at it is that it is a step UP from unemployment - which would allow him the flexibility to take the right job.

Coker may (unfairly) have the rap that he can't control his players, and no level of school would want that. Bill Lewis (fairly) got that rap, and he became a lifelong assistant. Coker is too old to try to get in the pros.

Coker as an OC would do incredible things to our recruiting. I can't imagine him taking the OC job at Tech, though. Can anyone else? He should at the very minimum be able to step in as HC at NC State or somewhere similar.

Revision

Chan - HFC
Giff - DC
BJM - LB
Geoff - DL & RC
OPEN - DB
Geis - OC/QB
Hunter - WR (& TE if not Geoff)
Modkins - RB
Joe D'A - OL
Kelly - ST

Current Grad Asst to Dir Player Personnel

If we hire Chris Hatcher, we should probably hire a couple more offensive coaches.

JMO, but I do not see him as HC next year maybe down the road but I do believe he would take an OC job at GT or any other good school.
He's a damn good OC.

Better yet how about the guy that ran John L. Smith's offense, Dave Baldwin. His offenses are consistentlly among the best in the country. This year MSU was ranked 14th nationally; last year, 5th; in 2004, 10th. He even took San Jose St to its only winning season in school history and after he left the team went 3-9 the following season with most of its roster intact. I don't think he would be a bad hire, at least on paper.

As far as Cocker is concerned I can tell you he hasn't been a bad OC but it's hard to be one with the talent "da U" has had over the years, it would be interesting to see what he would do when the talent lining up against him doesn't compare to his (as in Tech's case) and you have to relly on occasional gimmicks (throwing east and west, draws, occasional option etc, etc) to move the chains.

I thought everybody already knew that Coker is to be announced as OC for Butch Davis at UNC right after the U plays its bowl game. I would take him in a heartbeat if we needed an OC.

I have a hard time thinking that John L. Smith should coach anywhere. Him, Zook and Amato all seem to be out of the same mold, a lot of flamboyancy and general crazyness and little control of their players.

Is this the guy you want on the flats?

I remember seeing that. Why on God's green Earth did he slap himself at a press conference?
