Football Outsiders FEI Ratings

Nice insights...when our team plays well, our record is good. When our team plays poorly, our record is bad.

Innumerate Artsci wants to know if adding the two numbers together for a given year is a useful way to create a single number to compare years (ie. Lower total is better):dunno:

There is an overall FEI ranking too, basically football outsiders version of FPI, Sagarin, etc.

The last 20 years of GT history has only had 3-4 years where the defense was good (2003-06). Every other time, our success has come through offensive execution (late-90's and CPJ years).

It's tempting to credit Tenuta, but Tenuta in 2007 and then at ND, NC State and UVA hasn't set the world on fire. CCG funneled the best players to defense, but I also think we just got lucky with our defensive players. Luck as far as how many defensive players developed, how many we lost to attrition and injuries.

Our tempo is probably slower than just about any other team in the country, so that will naturally improve our defensive statistics and hurt our offensive statistics.

Case in point: look at 2009, when it was pretty obvious that our offense was awesome and our defense was really bad.

2009
total O - 26th
total D - 53rd

Our offense was #2 in efficiency, but moved fairly slowly. This protected our defense, at least in terms of stats.

Another simplistic, but more realistic way of looking at it is yards per play. This accounts for tempo, but not opponent or other things that skew stats.

2009
O - 23rd
D - 100th

2014
O - 9th
D - 111th

2015
O - 33rd
D - 76th

Perhaps, but we're right in the middle of the nation at Total Plays with 590 of 'em run. We're not doing much with 'em.

We've also played 1 or 2 more games than many of the teams on that list. I'd be willing to bet only a few teams run fewer plays/game than us.

edit - here it is. Can't find it for this season, but last season only 5 teams moved at a slower pace than us.
