Played ball at the GT gym today with the football players. Those guys are ridiculous athletes but also ridiculous hot heads. I saw them almost get in two seperate fights while there, including a certain unnamed player from the secondary pushing/punching someone, and a certain transfer running back picking fights with two people ~ 50 - 60 lbs smaller than him and inches shorter than him.

I cheer for these guys on the field but tough to watch.

corey earls plays bball like he does football--seems like he is asleep half the time.

They are taught and mentally conditioned to compete at the highest level and that winning is the only thing that matters. It becomes hard to turn off once you leave the field. In some cases, many years after the playing days are over some guys still have a hard time adjusting. What do you think it takes to beat UGA, Miami, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Boston College in the same season? Football in particular is not a part time thing, it is an all the time thing. It is a contest that requires you to have the desire to put your opponent down hard! Most learn to adjust off the field but not all do. Just realize this the next time you decide to step into a contest with someone that has this mindset. If they cross the line, I'm sure CPJ will deal with it.

Don't forget Clemson. It may be 50 years before we beat Clemson, Georgia, FSU and Miami in the same year. Enjoy it fully. I don't care who you are, but very very few teams can claim beating Clemson, Georgia, FSU and Miami in the same year.

(We need to focus on VPI by the way and start feeling like that game matters. It is a very hard game to get excited about but we have to learn to do it.)

After having them beat us by the narrowest of margins, have them beat us in tiebreaker and win ACC for it, going to be the highest ranked ACC team starting next season, and the fact that they have won the ACC 3 out of the last 5 making them the team to beat in the coastal....I'm pretty sure our guys will want to take em out, especially if it's either early in the season or on a Thurs night. I think especially those first two reasons will contribute greatly.

Hate to tell you gt02...but it just gets worse. Wait until you watch/play men's league basketball as you get older. No matter where the league...rec centers, churches, etc....no matter how bad the talent is....they can all be accountants during the day....then at night and on the weekends playing basketball they act like children. Arguments, fights, pushing, players quitting mid-game, etc....men's league basketball is, in most case, insane.

Yes, far worse than any youth/student/young adult league I've ever witnessed.

Sad really. :ugh:

Even worse when they are parents of youth leagues as well. Am a coach on 2 different youth teams -- and some of the other coaches/parents scare me sometimes.

Edit: Meant 2 different basketball youth teams. My football coaching experience was even worse. Head coach on another team had his lineman not block for his QB one play, because his QB forgot how to run a prior play.

+1 My uncle-in-law had his son on a local Pop Warner team. Ended up pulling him due to the overzealous parent asshole factor. The story he likes to tell is the dad who was berrating his 8 year old because (very sternly) "guys who drop passes don't get Superbowl rings!"

I remember playing pick-up games at the SAC when Joe Ham would show up. I don't think I've ever seen someone so competative during a meaningless bball game. He argued every foul, every out of bounds, and didn't let up for a second. Actually kind of annoying, but I guess that's what you get with such a competitor. He was MAYBE 5'10" or even 5'9", but damn did he work hard.

Antnee Allen is one dumbass sumbich. I can't imagine how in the hell we are keeping him academically eligible.

Cannot remember who I was in a game with back at SAC in late 80's, but was one of the linebackers. He set a pick on me on one play. Next thing I can remember is 1 hour later with me in the student clinic being kept for observation. Heard this pick was worse than the pick Hammonds put on Crybaby Hurley in that one game.

I'm 39 and don't play church league B-Ball or Flag Football anymore because I kept embarrassing my wife by taking it way too seriously.

I still have a guy at the old church in Augusta, GA that wouldn't talk to me even a year later because I was such a jerk on the field. I'm one of those who can't keep it in perspective once the game starts, so I finally learned not to do it at all.

Yeah, he was one of the primary instigators. He actually got into a shoving match with one of the other football players. I forgot to mention, one of them pushed a girl to the floor that was out there playing.

Regardless of how they are "trained," there is no excuse for it. And all of them weren't d-bags. There were a couple that were pretty cool and telling their buddies to chill out.
