For all of you bashing Pat Clark

This guy is my new favorite coach. You've got to think this will help recruiting.

Anyone else think that this tirade was infinitely more embarrassing for the kid than that article was?

"For all of you" would be me. I never said Pat Clark was a baby, I just said he sucked and couldn't cover a bed. Is that personal? or just the obvious?

Most definitely not directed at you specifically. I have only been on this board like two weeks. Not long enough to get everyone stereotyped :fingersx:

well...with the exception that I do not think most posters have become personal about like this idiot writer in Oklahoma that called a young man lazy, fat, and lacked toughness. She also said the coaches still would have played him if they were not afraid the backup would have transferred.

Did you read the article, because the writer didn't write any of that about the kid. The article wasn't anything worse than many I've seen Bradley write about GT. That coach is a freaking nut job and I promise you that didn't help recruiting. Would you send your kid to someone who flies off the handle?

http://newsok.com/article/3131543?pg=1 Here's the article. Gundy's reaction was a bit...over the top, to say the least. The only parts of the entire article that I felt were a little too much were the references to his mother feeding him chicken...but that's certainly not enough to bring out that reaction from his coach. Hell, it could even be what he needs to get him fired up.

To me it seemed that Gundy was most upset about certain parts of the article that, in his opinion, were simply not true.

I'm sure he was upset with sentences such as;

If you believe the rumors and the rumblings, Reid has been pushing coaches that way for quite some time.

Word is that Reid has considered transferring a couple different times.

Insiders say that the coaches decided to bench Reid early in the week.

If these three points were indeed false then I don't blame him for going off.

Pat Clark is a great kid who has played any position the staff has asked him to with zero complaint.

The best thing for Pat Clark would be at WR, but he is needed at CB, where the next best option is less talented than he is. The guy is not fast and it kills him, but he does as much with what he has as anyone on the field.

Please don't ever say anything bad about a guy who is giving 100%. It's never that guys fault that he happens to be the best we have, while not being as talented as what we want.

I'm sure the coverage makes him as mad as it does us, but he's busting his tail and not complaining while he's getting left out there for everyone to see him struggle. Two thumbs up for Patrick Clark in my opinion. Maybe not for his talent, but certainly for doing what he does with no complaint.

I appreciate the guy.

I wish we had a more talented option at the position, but we won't find a better guy. I hope most fans are smart enough to recognize it for what it is.

Are u serious?

I think recruits like to see a coach stand up and defend his players. It just would've come across better had he not been shrieking like a crazed woman. No offense to crazed women.

"I'M A MAN!"

Agreed, especially the part about not offending crazed women.

If Gundy's over-the-top responses makes a published journalist think twice before getting a little too cute and creative in their comments, then it is all for the better. Edit out a few lines and the article is not bad (assuming it is accurate, which Gundy says it isn't.) But those few lines make all the difference.

Stoops supported Gundy indirectly as well. He said WTTE it is funny how some journalists can't seem to take what they dish out on a regular basis.

BTW,
Most of the e-mails coming in to the local stations seem to be in support of the coach.

Are you?

Not trying his hardest or giving his all is one thing, but to bash the guy because he makes a mistake (or many mistakes) is just not right.

But it's easy, particularly when anonymous and behind a keyboard.

Would you say the same to his face? That's the question I ask myself before I post.

He's a student athlete representing GT, and as long as he's doing all he can and within the rules he's beyond personal attack as far as I'm concerned. Blame the coaches for playing him, or blame the coaches for not having more skill at the position, but to bash the player for doing all the right things is a sad comment on those doing the bashing.

I can tell you one thing, I would play for Gundy in a second, and I would have no problem with my son doing the same...Mike

Tampa, that is a good questioin to ask. Its kind of like when I was in college in 1994 and went to a party off campus and saw our entire starting offensive line smoking pot on the back of this girl's porch. I said out loud, "No wonder we suck so bad this year."

So I reserve the right to say whatever I want to about whatever player I want to, because I earned it. You walk up to 5+ 275 lb plus lineman and tell them they suck and you too can call out anyone you want to.

No, he bashed her for writing 'lies' and attacking the kid personally by commenting about his mother feeding him and his heart.

She had a blog entry earlier in the day saying that she hoped he'd take the previous week's benching as a sign to shape up.

Then, the other kid starts and Reid's off joking and smiling in the background while his team is playing (where are our QBs when they aren't playing?). And after the game, he's off to the side talking on his cell with his mother feeding him. She was trying to point out that the kid doesn't get it.

She also later had an opportunity to ask Gundy in a press conference which items in her article were not factual and he refused to answer.

She has nothing to think twice about.

You earned it? How so? Because you called out offensive linemen for breaking the law and team rules 13 years ago, you now have carte blance to rip players whose on-the-field performance is not up to your expectations?

That's silly -- apples and oranges.

Need I remind you that Pat is guilty of none of that -- he broke no rules or laws.

All Pat has done is all the coaches have asked him to do, including changing position for the good of the team.

He may have made mistakes ON THE FIELD, he may have not lived up to your expectations of what a cornerback at GT should play like, but to call him out personally for his gameday shortcomings (as you have also done for certain offensive linemen) is just wrong, at least to me.

GO JACKETS!...Mike

Well...Reggie was on the sidelines joking and smiling at Athens last year, and I don't remember too many fans taking kindly to that(myself included). Everyone keeps saying this kid is just an amateur, student athlete...which is true, but when you willingly take a D1 starting job(especially at quarterback), you know what you are getting into. You get the credit and exaggerated love when you do well, you get the blame and over the top criticism when you don't. Everyone knows it. This ain't intramurals; it's d-1 football.
