For those claiming "progress"...

Wht even play the season out, let's just ship USC and West Virginia to wherever next years BCS game is to be played and label it, 'The BCS 2008 championship sponsored by 'Mr. College Football'.

Interesting article from an "expert" (sic). As I recall, Tech was not ranked in anyone's preseason poll in 1990 or 1998 and those teams did pretty well (except for the FSU game in 98).

pretty hard to ignore the talent here(if Tenuta stays)since TB looks ok,we are not without weaknesses but overall top 30(if #41 leaves readjust to top 40, maybe)

What about the ACC records for the last 5 years?

4-4, 4-4, 4-4, 5-3 and 7-1 certainly qualifies as progress within the conference.

7-6, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-5 would represent slow progress overall. There are some deficiencies within these numbers however; 0-5 vs UGA and 2-3 in bowl games. GT has won 6 of it's last 8 bowl games prior to this, though it's true that run stretched over 17 seasons.

Reality of the situation is that the loss to WF has somewhat tempered a consensus feeling of overall progress (as I'm sure did the loss to UGA). There is progress in winning the Coastal Division but for many, myself included, the loss to WF diluted this accomplishment. Whether that's a right or wrong feeling I don't know, but I'd feel a lot better right now with that victory. And let's not forget the situation we had at QB this year, many cannot understand, especially now, why TB didn't get at least a series against WF or UGA.

Finally the incoming recruiting class, and perhaps on a lesser note the positive showing Taylor Bennett had in the Gator, can be categorized as nothing but a big positive.

Personally, I don't think we've progressed that much, but measuring progress based on preseason polls is retarded.

I wonder whether our perspective on this season would be different if we'd lost to a "better" team in the ACCCG, like an "FSU of Yore" team, for instance.

I know for sure very very few people would be complaining if we'd beaten UGA this year, and I (for one) cannot hang that loss on the coaches.

I think most people feel that we lost the two biggest games of the year to teams with less talent and closed out the season in a disappointing fashion similar to every other year.

I can't argue with that, except to note that our serious lack of composure at the QB spot pretty well neutralizes any talent advantage we may have had in either of those games.

don't disagree...only measurement is that of past polls which is not good. However, there are those here that seem to think the ship is suddenly going to be "righted" next year for whatever reason they want to grasp onto. That "wait till next year" crowd is always amusing and I only posted this preseason prognostication to show folks that those without yellow colored glasses also see no reason to believe otherwise with Gailey's team.

How long must this continue before they wake up?

CJ, the best player we may ever have on the flats will be gone, new unseasoned qb, same coaches....

Preseason polls are the ones which picked F$U and scUM to play in the 2006 ACC Championship Game, the ones which picked the Gators to not win the NC, the ones that said we would finish 3rd in the coastal.

THEY ARE MEANINGLESS!!

geetee I think I speak on behalf of the majority on StinGTalk in saying: GO THE HELL AWAY!!!

Meaningless to a degree... if you have a good season, to start out being ranked (or not ranked in this case) can sometimes be a challenge when it comes to having to hurdle those higher ranked preseason teams that could have the same record. They are meaningless when guaging future success of a programs, but they are interesting to see that GT is no where on the radar screen. Yet, some here talk that next year is going to be the best! yellow meet glasses.

I am neither surprised nor outraged by these rankings, although Tony Barnhardt is never the final word on football IMO.

After the whole of the '06 season has played out and we keep a balanced perspective, acknowledging the strong positive of a 7-1 conference record and wins over VPI and the U, and acknowledging the dismal ending with three close losses to UGA, WFU, and WVU, I think picking us anywhere from 30 to 50 is reasonable.

As I look at the 40 teams picked, six are on our schedule. Right now 6-6, 4-4 in the ACC with losses to those five teams seems reasonable. Even 5-7 with a loss to BC is not unthinkable.

But, the good news is that of the 6 or 7 teams who may be considered a little better than us going in to next year, only 2 are listed in the top 20, Va Tech and UGA, and they are not without their own question marks.

If we are indecisive in choosing a QB, lose Wheeler or Choice early, don't get TE's to step up, don't get bigger and stronger on the D-line, don't find playmakers on both sides to help offset the loss of CJ and K-Mike, don't improve in the secondary, and if we continue to be better off kicking out of bounds than letting our cover team try and do better, we will finish between 5-7 and 7-5.

But, if we work hard and work together, make the improvements above, and have a great offseason none of those six or seven teams are unbeatable. Reasonable optimism causes me to say we will be better than Mr. Barnhardt thinks, I think we will be between 8-4 and 10-2.

Beej, this here deserves to be sigged. Knox, thank you.

the thing to keep in mind is we could have EASILY won every game we lost.

For us to "break out" we are going to need players to step up.

When I was sitting in the rain at the ACCCG the clear difference in that game was Wake's QB who stepped up.

Ugag's qb made some good throws at the end to win the game as well.

Another big issue was we were not getting the turnovers from the D and although the D was solid it was not as much as it could have been.

Even with a strong QB perfomance in the Gator Bowl we still lost.

There will be no game on our schedule next year were we are more than 7pt dogs.

To not recognize 7-1 in the ACC is IDIOTIC. We should take that every year.

I can see this: Stout Defense, Steady Offense

Wins: Army, Duke, Samford or whoever it is, Notre Dame, UNC, Clemson, UGA, VPI, Miami, UVA, Maryland, Boston College 12-0

I could see winning every one of those games, but this is more likely:

Wins: Army, Duke, Samford or whoever it is, UNC, Notre Dame, Boston College 6-6

Actually, this is what I'd hope for:

Wins: Army, Duke, Samford or whoever it is, Notre Dame, UNC, Boston College, UGA, Maryland 9-3

I don't really seeing us beating UVA, VPI or Miami next year.

Huh?

I don't think we'll beat VPI, but UVA is wretched, and Miami's got a bunch of thug players and an entirely new coaching staff. Miami might not make a bowl.

Then sig it, dude. Click the button that says "User CP" at the top left up there.

beej67,
can't be troubled to sig everything sigworthy
