A day after CPJ says the Spring game is all about "having fun" and "don't take much out of it," Mike Knobler delivers a blistering review of the game today. Some "highlights" of the article:

Jackets' offense fumbles through T-Day

The first snap was fumbled.

The second first down came on the ninth possession.
"When we were checking, they knew what we were checking to, which way we were going," he said. The third turnover arrived before the first scoring play.
Welcome to Georgia Tech's spring football game. If you wanted happy news about the offense, you came to the wrong place.

The A-backs, B-backs and other, unlettered guys running Paul Johnson's system got an F for much of Saturday.

It was not only a not-ready-for-prime-time performance but also a not-to-be-aired-in-full one. Comcast Sports Southeast might be able to find some highlights for the offense.

Still, a day that included only one touchdown for the first-team offense hardly made a glowing advertisement for Tech's new offensive direction.

Five months ago, Tech fans booed their old coach, Chan Gailey, when he appeared on the Bobby Dodd Stadium video board in a taped don't-drink-and-drive public service announcement. Saturday, Tech fans cheered Johnson in a pregame introduction and listened attentively to a brief postgame interview broadcast over the stadium loudspeakers. School officials estimated the crowd at 8,500.

The No. 1 offense's first 10 possessions led to seven punts, one turnover, one touchdown and one unconverted fourth down.

I unfortunately missed the game but that's about the same synopsis that my roommate gave me when he came back from it. He also said that Paul Johnson got pretty pissed and actually ended up doing a lot of coaching when he was supposed to be a spectator. Not a good note to end spring practice on. I wonder how much the fact that the defense knows our offense pretty intimately matters. I would guess it helps a lot, but I hope that this isn't what happens every time we run into a really prepared defense...thinking about the bye week that U[sic]GA has before us.

PJ was on the field right behind the offense on every play. He definitely wasn't a spectator.

It's very common for the defense to be ahead of ANY offense during the spring. That said, flags and fumbles are drive-killers to a 3-0 system. CPJ has to be pissed about the flags and especially the fumbles. He will make these a priority leading into the fall. I know everyone has been waiting to see the 'explosive new system' but please relax. We are under good management. The corvette wasn't created in four weeks either.:D

I hope you are being sarcastic JoltinJacket. This is just one practice and if you think we're not going to get better then you're a moron.

We haven't perfected a totally different offense in 15 practices? Somebody fire up the bus cause we need to start throwin people under it..

Is Josh Nesbitt capable of not fumbling? I just don't see how he can run this offense. I hate turnovers and in a possession offense, it is even more important. Does anyone really believe after watching JN last year and this Spring that he can turn the ball over less than 1 time a game?

I thought Nesbitt showed real problems handling the ball as a freshman running the conventional offense preferred by Gailey. I thought his deficiencies in that area explained why he ran the keeper on what seemed about 80% of his plays. Now he runs an offense that demands great ball handling by the QB.

I am sure they will work with him the rest of off-season and hope he is improved by fall practice. If not, I see a position switch to running back or a transfer. An option offense cannot afford a QB turning the ball over.

Hold the phone Kyle. My thread title was completely tongue-in-cheek and meant as a dig at the AJC for jumping at the chance to look down on Tech. Trust me, I'm totally in CPJ's corner and have full confidence that we'll be a well-oiled machine in the fall.

Just out of curiosity, how much practice do we have left between now and the first game? From that article and from what a lot of people are posting on here, we are pretty far away from being a well-oiled machine. I have full confidence that we will eventually be a well-oiled machine, but I am starting to get the impression that it might be a rough first year.

What, 20 or so practices in August. According to Johnson, the O is about "50-60% installed" after 15 practices. The system should be pretty much installed by the Jax St game. That doesn't mean we'll see perfection this year. It's still going to be hard to run the spread / 3-option without his type of system players. There will be speed bumps ahead.

Here's a thought: think of the most negative thing you can, and post it on a message board.

The offense did not look good today, but I did not expect much different given the drastic change to our offensive scheme and the relatively minor changes in our defensive philosophy.

My dad went to Georgia Southern, and I grew up on Paul Johnson's offense Saturday after Saturday. I was happy to see him hired, and I fully expect that with time we will be consistent winners under CPJ. That being said, I think it will probably take half a season until the offense really clicks.

IMO, the option offense is all about repetition, and these guys have only had 15 practices. It will take a lot more repetition and a lot more work, but when it clicks it'll be pretty rewarding.

Maybe I have a CPJ bias because of my youth, but I just don't think what I saw at T-Day today is a big issue right now. There may be a few kinks because CPJ doesn't have his "system" guys right now, but I don't think that will be the issue by and large either. I think it's going to take our players buying in to the system and working hard. The only thing I saw today that I got frustrated with was the sloppiness of the pitches. But again, I know that will come with time.

Let's give the team a lot more practice and a few more outings before we throw any of them under the bus.

The negativity on this board kills me because the people saying it have no clue about the offense and how well it takes to learn. 15 practices, I mean come on this is entirely new and in hardly anyways similar to our old offense, so what do you expect after only 15 practices.. give it time. If there is anything that we should be concerned about (which will be fixed with time) is the play of our offensive line. I mean it is easy to say o yea fumbles killed us but the majority of the fumbles today were caused by the o-line not even touching the d-line at all. So please just give it time... PJ is the master of this offense and if he isn't worried neither should we be. On that note I honestly believe that we have the best d-line in the ACC and in the top in the nation.

It's amazing how similar sports boards and investing boards are.

From week to week it's "we'll only win five games/the stock is going to drop 50%" to "we can win the conference and score 40 a game!/the stock will triple in 6 months!" all based on small changes up and down from day-to-day.

Thank God there weren't internet message boards when the Japanese were kicking our asses in the few months between Pearl Harbor and Midway.

And there will not be "official" work between now and August-----but there will be work, believe it. Exspecially on the theoretical, conceptual side of the offense. And, come August, there are a dozen new faces that will be asked to contribute. New faces that do not have the Gailey stench to be scrubbed off before moving forward. I believe the "new blood" factor will be significant, both in contribution and in readjusting some of our veterans' attitudes.

Exspecially on the theoretical, conceptual side of the offense.

Can the coaches be involved in any of this theoretical, conceptual stuff?

That I do not know. My statement was based on numerous posts by players and former players that say there is teaching that goes on throughout the year in some way shape or form. Anyone know the exact regulations?

TO offenses do fumble. Navy did, Tech did in the old days. Obviously you need to limit them, but to expect perfect ballhandling is to set a ridiculously high bar. Whether Josh will be at QB next season or not I don't know. But whoever is at QB will have some fumbles, especially when the DL is in the backfield as they were Saturday.

I think the biggest issues were that 1) PJ decided to go ones vs ones, which most teams dont' do, and 2) the DL has learned the offense at least as well as the OL has and knew not only what we were running but what all our calls were.

Like another poster said, I think CPJ put ones v. ones because he had a good idea what would happen. I sure he was somewhat pleases the #1 O showed signs of life in the 2nd half. But it will light a fire under out offensive guys, especially Nesbitt, to work hard all summer to avoid embarrassment like that in a real game. Hopefully, they got the message.
