I came across this article from a few years back and was surprised to read a quote from Ralph that he regrets not taking the HC job at Tech back in 2001. I honestly don't remember any mention of Ralph being mentioned for the job back then. How different would the decade have looked had Ralph decided to come back in 2002?

I know we have fond memories of him as OC, but his record at Maryland wasn't really that good. First three years won 10 games, then averaged 6 wins for the next 7 years.

I would have loved to have Fridge as our HC in 2002....I didn't know he was a candidate.
No one knows how successful he would have been here as a head coach. I am guessing but IMO he would have performed better than Chan. But doesn't really matter now.

Ehh not really. Probably their second or third best 10-year stretch in school history; and their only relevancy in the last 40 something years.

Ralph won 8+ games 6 times in 10 years. They didn’t win 8 in the 15 years prior to his arrival, and haven’t won 8 in the 12 years since he left.

I just don't see fridge getting results that much better than Gailey, but you never know. We probably win the ACCCG in 2006, though, and I don't chug that bottle of cheap champagne in misery. Would've been a happier hangover. He was near retiring age anyways. In a weird way, I think we still end up with Geoff as our head coach.

Fridge would have made Reggie Ball a superior QB, something that Chan and Nix could never do.

That ööööing double reverse on a short ööööing yardage it whatever that was in the 2006 ACCC game still pisses me off.

That and the pick 6 right before half against Fresno.

Now that I think about it, I have a lot of pissed off moments in my Tech fandom.

Ralph Friegden would have been a good HC selection.wish we had gone there.
i'm sure glad this thread isn't about Refrigerator Perry who would not have been a good coach choice.

Sounds like a great Xs and Os coach, but a poor recruiter based on the record/trajectory. We had one of those in Paul Johnson. His best fit was as OC, where he was phenomenal for us.

I was glad to hear Ralph say that Tech people treated him great. He was part of one of the very best coaching staffs Tech ever had. I also think Chan was a real good coach. We've had some good coaches at Tech.

AD's and presidents are another story.

Friedgen is Tech royalty as far as I’m concerned….one of if not the best offensive mind in the game. Exceptional coordinators do not always make great head coaches…different set of skillsets. Numerous examples of this.

Great coordinator and I think a great head coach as well. One misconception of Ralph was how tough it was to play for him. CPJ was tough but the players seem to like him and if not like him, then not overly scared of him. Listen to Hamilton talk about Ralph. Ralph scared him to death. I also don't think he was great with alumni. O'leary didn't like alumni but realized they were a necessary evil, I don't think Ralph even cared that much.
