Good for him. The nutrisystem crap though is crap. He should just watch his calorie intake and exercise more.

Keep an eye on your gall bladder and liver, Ralph. But otherwise, looking good Fatman.

He is still one of my favorite coaches. The Os we had during the Joe Ham days still bring a smile to my face.

Tell that to the huge flocks of people that it's helped - no, I'm not one of them. It's not always that easy for someone to just watch their intake and exercise more. That's why weight watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutrisystem are so profitable - and successful. I'm not trying to stand on a soap box here. I'm just saying some can't just cut their intake - they need mentoring.

Agreed. If it was that easy to stay healthy, 25% of the country wouldn't be obese. And studies show that portion control/calorie counting is the best way to keep those pounds off.

No offense Xih, but you're 15, right?

That plan works great when you're young, not so great when you get older.

From the people I know who have done nutrisystem, its all about completely comitting yourself to just eating their food, and the food is so bad that you just don't care to eat it. So boom, weight loss.

Damn good for him though. Not a favorite since him jumping (albiet not very high) around on our field celebrating in 2001, but getting healthier is never a bad thing.

its not that easy to lose weight? please. just STOP EATING SO MUCH and dont eat prepared foods or fast foods

unless you have a metabolic disorder, it is not hard to lose weight if you are 300 pounds. it is simple discipline no matter how old you are. Daily (even minor) exercise and eat better.

if you are about 25 pounds overweight and find it hard to lose those last 25, that is something different, but for someone at 300, changing simple habits will lead to weight loss. this aint rocket science

walk 30 minutes, eat half the amount you did before, or the same amount but instead of Cheetos, eat celery

yall make is sound like some kind of rocket science... :>P

I can tell you one thing. He's one mean SOB. I went to the Bobby Ross/Bobby Dodd football camp when I was younger and he basically ran the camp. Just think of Full Metal Jacket. That mean SOB knows his X's and O's though. It's crazy to think about the staff Ross had with Fridge being one of them.

This is getting completely tangential, but losing weight is NOT as easy as some of you make it out to be. Once you decrease your caloric intake, your body adjusts to reduce metabolic activity -- it is actually evolutionary protection, as when we were hunter/gatherers we had periods of lean despite being mobile, so our bodies are able to decrease metabolic activity even if people are exercising. And as soon as you stop eating so rigorously, the metabolic activity does not increase again until you are back at your old weight (or close to it). This is why so many people yo-yo.

Caloric intake is the key as you all are mentioning, but it is not that easy -- and the scientific studies agree. In the largest study conducted recently, at the end of the 2 years, the average weight loss was 9 pounds. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/360/9/859

This all being said, I am a big proponent of South Beach diet, as the maintenance phase of that diet is one I recommend to everyone. It is a variation of a Mediterranean diet. (And recent study showed Mediterranean diet is beneficial in prevention of Alzheimer's)

so really the only and best answer is.. dont get so fat in the first place, i guess

what is your opinion of the success of things like stomach stapling and what ever happened to the tapeworm?

Wait..... are you saying that BuzzCzar is wrong about something?! Impossible!

the studies that i have seen show that if you slowly change your habits, you can avoid the YoYo

if you crash diet, then your body shuts down to protect your life, but if you slowly decrease your caloric intake along with increasing your activity, then you will lose weight and keep it off.

dont say "for two weeks i will only eat half of the fries", say "from now on, i will eat one less fry every day until a year from now i will not be eating fries"

its a matter of pace. i guess the data i have seen could be wrong, though

Not a fan of stomach stapling. Much more of a fan of lap banding -- if you can get it done at a place that does a lot of them and a surgeon that does a lot of them. However, this is not football related, so I will bow out of this discussion here.

When I was watching the ACC pre-season round up on espn the other night, I actually didn't know that it was him (due to the huge weight loss) until the camera angle showed the Maryland logo.

The fact that he's a good coach is undeniable, but I never cared much for him on a personal level at all, maybe that's just me.

I realize it's hard for some folks to lose weight, but the simple fact is that calorie counting is the key. You can pay thousands of dollars to have someone else count for you and thousands more for a placebo to give you magical will power, but it's still all about what you put in the pie hole.
