Friend says Pryor made 20-40k in a year

The NCAA violations were discovered when the name of the local memorabilia dealer, Dennis Talbott, was seen on checks Pryor was depositing in his personal bank account.

Wow, that's bold, that's saying 'we are tOSU and we are above any investigation'. Hey, let's not just flaunt the rules, let's leave an obvious paper trail to follow. Paying the players cash is one thing, writing personal checks to them is a whole new level of arrogance.

I thought his problem was no defense.

Look at Auburn last season, their defense was horrendous for most of the year and they still went undefeated. I think Pryor in Rich Rod's offense could have seen similar success to Newton in Malzahn's offense.

THREE letters IRS......if we are talking 40 G's and he did not pay taxes on that money Pryor MAY BE GOING TO JAIL

when money like this changes hands usually the easiest way for the gov't to take you down is through the IRS, so if I am Pryor I get me a good lawyer and start cutting a deal b/f the feds come after me.

He's right.

Nah. Forty K isn't very much actually. And the bulk of that revenue is unproven. Take in the fact that his parents probably claimed him on their taxes as a dependent, and we aren't talking major problems with the IRS. And the IRS will just make him pay the $10K in fines before he goes to court.

They've already lost their head coach and senior QB, that already is more than a "slap on the wrist."

I'm sure they won't be punished as much as most people think they should, but that's because most people think the punishment should be based on the actual rules laid down by the NCAA. However, pretty much everyone agrees that the NCAA rules and the whole "student-athlete" thing are largely a sham anyway, so I'm not sure why anyone thinks it would be different when judging punishments.

I'm sure what happened here isn't much different than what happens at SEC schools and other big name schools all the time. The difference is that these guys were apparently a little too obvious about it.

QFT

In other news, Ohio State fans are pissed because Colt Mccoys wife/gf said they did similar stuff at Texas (OSU fans say ESPN is not reporting and covering it up)

I can see the next SI story being on Texas.

They should get the death penalty but we all realize that they won't. There seems to be a lot of evidence that "lack of institutional control" is in play here. If you could name their punishment, what would seem fair? What punishment fits their crime? Here is what I would dish out if it were up to me: Loss of 8 scholarships per year for two years and a loss of five scholarships for the following 3 years; no TV or TV revenues for five years; no bowl games for five years; ineligible for Big Ten division championship/conference championship game for five years. What say you?
Sounds good if it is clear that this is a pattern for all players and fans rather than Pryor.we shall see.

Only if Nebraska starts a professional football league. He's playing in Canada if he wants to be a qb.

I don't get the Nebraska reference, I assume that you mean the offensive style that he would fit best at QB?

I agree,NCAA hammers a SMU but lets OSU and Auburn skate. Not really fair is it?

SMU in the day was a pretty big program. Not now, but back then. The death penalty killing SMU pretty much destroyed the SWC, which was a pretty big conference back then.

SMU wasn't part of "the club." Hard to compete with a cheater that's better at cheating than you, so just call him out on it.

Like I said in the last thread, this is bad, but it's nowhere near the level of SMU. SMU had members of their Board paying players after the NCAA caught them multiple times.

I agree.... SMU was, without a doubt, deserving of the punishment it received. Having said that, though, I don't think the NCAA will ever give out that penalty again. Post-season ban for 3 years, 30 'ships taken away. That's the most they'd give OSU.
