From what I hear on GT AD job...

Curry wants it and wants it bad. Even though he has no experience as an AD, he does understand the Total Person Concept that Homer Rice developed and that over 65 Div 1-A colleges implemented (dont believe Clough nor Braine ever read the book), and with that in mind as well as his understanding the unique nature of our Academic/Athletic tug-of-war at GT, and how yu have to have friends on the "other side" (academic side obv) I believe he would make an excellent AD- much better than he was as a coach. He may be able to introduce Clough to what the Total Person Concept's ultimate objective is and how Athletics and Academics can feed off each other. And yes, I believe Braine will announce he's retiring whenever we get the final word from NCAA whatever date that is supposed to be- so let's say March 1.

my understanding is that he is obviously one of the major candidates, I know there are one or two others that are/were in the running as little as a week ago, but they're flying under the radar a lot more than Curry.

I'm sure he's got a lot of backers though, always nice to have a Tech man, but old grudges die hard, and I'm not sure about his loyalty seeing as how the last FB game was his first one in person since he was a coach... makes me wonder, not that I'm a skeptical person. If he's picked, I'll up my donation (but that will really happen with any AD since I just graduated, but will make sure the new AD gets congratulated in my donation).

Evidently you know much about this, so what makes you say that Curry wants that job so badly? Did I miss an open statement to that fact? I'm glad to hear this but it's news to me. Could you post a link to share this with us?

Bill Curry will get it.

It is a good possibility Todd Stansbury would come down as an Assoc. AD and be groomed for the head job in the future.

Bill Curry is 63 years old...or so...so will only do the job for a few years most likely.

Curry has the balls left to do a helluva job. Problem is, we need him yesterday. Braine is an old woman. A bag of gas. Worthless.

As far as your "this is what I hear" crap is concerned, I'm calling bullshit.

Right on Hiver!!! An Executive Director of Athletics running all the administrative duties under Bill Curry as the Head Athleic Director - that's two Georgia Tech Grads, former football players, both were great students - that's what we need to get the program back on track. Bill Curry would be a terrific spokes person for Georgia Tech. Hiver - Your suggestion is a perfect. And you also have a good measure on the inside scoop about politics behind the scenes at GT. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Would you care to substantiate your claim that Dr. Clough and Coach Braine aren't familiar with the total person concept? B/c I'm pretty sure you're beyond off base.

Please, someone tell me, what would/could Curry do to enlarge the fanbase. What good is "uniting" the current fan base if it does not fill the stadium. I see his pontificating as a turn off to a lot of Southern football fans. They don't want to sit there and listen to how the right guard had trouble in science class this week because his former high school math teacher had a dog that wizzed on his mothers new tires that were too expensive for her to pay for so he had to send some of his laundry money to her and he could not buy some lighter fluid to complete his science project that, as luck would have it, is taught by the third cousin of his aforementioned high school teachers' dogs trainer who is divorced from his mothers sister.

And not to mention his TOTAL lack of experience. This is a repeated step down the road to mediocrity.

That is the funniest thing I've read this week. Thank you sir.

My two cents' worth: I haven't read or heard anything outside this website about Curry wanting the job, or even that Braine may be leaving (though it is time he does). However, if the job is indeed open, I think Bill Curry would make a great choice - not because he is a Tech man, though that is a nice-to-have, but because he is smart, he knows his way around the college football coaching fraternity, and I THINK (no proof of this) that he can manage people and systems. Bottom line is, I hope it happens soon.

Well, you obviously dont run in the same circles as I do so if you havent heard it by now then you must live outside the perimeter.

Mark my words. BRAINE WILL ANNOUNCE HE IS REITIRING AND WILL NOT BE OUR AD IN 2007

Just my opinion from the way things have gone over the last 5 years. That's all. Just my opinion.

Totally agree on Stansbury and quite frankly he would be my first choice if it was between the 2 for the AD job.

I share your concern. I've been pretty mute on the Curry as AD thing. I will say this I think he brings a lot to the table in terms of knowing how to sell GT. He's got oodles of media connections and coaching connections. He's also very well respected in those circles. I also think he would be a great asset to generate positive PR and improve GT's ability to create positive PR. I also think Curry will fight for the programs. If Curry is hired, I think it will be very important to have someone who is a complete manager (something I don't feel Curry would be good at) to run over the day to day operations of the GTAA.

That said, I question his experience, but I look at it like this. Many of the most successful AD's became AD's because of their coaching experience. People think the job is about generating money and raising money, and it is... BUT generating money will come naturally from improving and strengthening GT's image both on and off the fields of play.

Curry bio:

Prior to ESPN, Bill Curry spent 17 years (1980-96) as a head coach in the college ranks, accumulating a 79-98-4 record at Georgia Tech (1980-86), Alabama (1987-89) and Kentucky (1990-96). In 1989, Curry led Alabama to the SEC title. He also was the recipient of numerous honors, including ACC Coach of the Year (1985), SEC Coach of the Year (1987 and 1989), and the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year (1989).

Prior to his first head coaching assignment, Curry spent three seasons in the NFL (1977-79) as an assistant coach to Bart Starr and the Green Bay Packers. Curry played pro football from 1965 to 1974 with the Green Bay Packers (under the legendary Vince Lombardi), Houston Oilers, Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams, and was an All-Pro center with the Colts in 1971 and 1972. A 1965 Georgia Tech graduate with a degree in industrial management, Curry also starred for the Yellow Jackets football squad from 1963-64.

Bill Curry is the former Chief Operating Officer of the National Consortium for Academic and Sports (NCAS) and continues to serve on their executive committee. Created by Richard Lapchick's Center for the Study of Sports in Society at Northeastern University, the NCAS's member schools (currently more than 160) agree to bring back former athletes of revenue-producing sports to complete their degrees at no cost. In turn, the former athletes participate in outreach and community services programs. To date, more than 13,000 athletes have returned to finish their degrees. The NCAS is based at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
