I don't think this has been posted... this was forwarded to me by a coworker/FSU graduate...

October 7, 2009Statement from FSU President T.K. WetherellRegarding Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden

Coach Bobby Bowden is a friend of mine, as a mentor and coach since my freshman year at FSU in 1963. His character and commitment to excellence has always been the signature of his career. Two years ago Coach Bowden and I and others stood together and announced that we were beginning a period of transition for the football program. That plan is in place and will produce results, given the opportunity and support.

I want to assure all fans, friends, supporters and alumni of Florida State University that that transition will be finalized. Jimbo Fisher will be Florida State University’s next Head Football Coach. We expect to work with Coach Fisher on a contract toward that end, and I will evaluate the program with the athletics director at the end of this season.

As educators we teach our students to always do the right thing, to do it the right way and to never give up. We teach them to always strive for excellence and to make good decisions with that end in mind. Our athletics programs are built on the foundation of helping young people build character and display that in their personal actions as well as on the fields of play. We also expect our teams to be competitive.

Our administration also is committed to those ideals. In intercollegiate athletics that means evaluating every coaching position at the end of the season. Any coach can choose to retire at any time. However, it is the athletics director’s responsibility to determine which coaches are hired and which contracts are extended.

I know all of our fans, friends, supporters and alumni will accord the coaching staff and our young student-athletes all the support, encouragement and respect they deserve. I will respect the process. FSU does not make coaching changes in the middle of the season. We are going to win games and build character. We ask our coaches and players to play out every play of every game -- and never, never quit. To quit on a team or coaches in mid season is not the Seminole way -- not the "unconquered" way. What message would it send to anyone -- friend or foe -- to do that at this time?

Specifically, I also know that Bobby Bowden loves this university. I have talked with him at length, and I know that he will do the right thing, as he always has done. I know the man and I know what’s in his heart.

I have spoken with numerous fans, alumni, Boosters, supporters and staff, and I will make a final report to the full Board of Trustees at the end of the year. Until then, FSU will concentrate on supporting our team and student-athletes in winning as many games as possible. Neither the university nor I will have further comment on this matter until then.

considering Jimbo gets a separation package of $5M if he's not named HC in 2011, and all I keep hearing is "Fisher will be the next coach, Fisher will be the next coach", I'm thinking that Bowden, if he doesn't retire this year, won't be offered a contract extension.

Enjoy it while it lasts, the Bobby Bowden era of Florida State football is coming to a close w/in the next 2 years...

Buddy of mine also got a different letter from their athletic assoc. asking for any ammount of money they could give but wouldn't say what it was for. They were asking for as little as $25 when the only letter he gets during the year is in the spring and minimum asking price is $1000.

I guess we will see if this brings the short term stability that it was intended to achieve. The betting public evidently assumes it does since the line edged over towards FSU. It just seems to me that the players still see Bobby, Jimbo, Amato, and Mickey as fragmented leadership. Advantage: Jackets.

So if Jimbo becomes coach, will he retain the other coaches, or is he going to clean house and hire his own people?

I hope he keeps the other coaches so that the football program will continuing sucking and underachieves.

I would think he would clean house and bring in a whole new staff.

and then slip into the Dark Ages of 4-win seasons and mediocrity and how they longed for the days of Bowden while ironically playing on the field that bears his name...

or maybe thats just what I hope happens?

That would really be the kicker, wouldn't it? If FSU somehow ends up with an 8 win season this year, then they force Bowden out and have a four win season the next.

It wouldnt surprise me in the least if they get rid of bobby and end up worse off. I really am not a big fan of jimbo i just dont think he is the answer for fsu.

The way I understand it, that is the central issue--not that Jimbo Fisher would take over, but that Jimbo would demand the freedom to name a new staff. The President's statements in our media down here firmly establishes Fisher's right to do so. But it gives Bowden wiggle room to stay "in charge" one more year. Crazy.

Same friend I have from F$U said that bobby, chuckie and mickey have teamed up agains Jimbo. Says lots of problems in locker room.

If I were an FSU fan, I would not be comforted by this President's email. Who's to say that Jimbo Fisher is going to run things much differently? The guy is a student of the Bowdens.

I hope that this continues for as long as possible this week, less focus on us.

BTW, keep hearing about this "swing or punch" that one coach tried to give another rumor. Anybody got any dirt on that?? I know its a rumor, but for entertainment sake , we might as well air it out too!
:fingersx:

I heard the same thing from my fsu friends. They are also telling me this is going to be the game where the players show who they support either come out real fired up and try to get one for old bobby or play kinda half-assed.

I would expect all the players planning to go to the NFL to play at their best because their main objective is looking good for scouts, right?

I've also heard they don't get along from my FSU alumnus friend... Your contact maybe more in the know, but it still says something.

It would be foolish for anyone to expect FSU to not try and whip our asses, no matter whom they support in the lockerroom. This is going to be a tough and probably close game. I will be impressed with our team if they can pull this one off.

I wasnt suggesting they werent going to come out and play just that they may be more willing to role over and die if they get behind by a score or two and that they may have less fight in them if they get behind.
