Atlanta Sports Council President, Gary Stokan, is headed to the ACC League meetings looking to get an ACC regular season gm lined up for the Dome in '08. The FSU-Alabama match in Jacksonville this yr is getting some of the bigger venues to look at regular season tilts differently.
I get the feeling that Stokan is looking at the Ga Tech-Mississippi St in particular (& Ole Miss in '10 & Alabama in '12), but there may be others. I can't see anyone moving a conference gm to the Dome, so u're probably seeking a non-conference matchup. Why would FSU or Clemson move since they make so much already at home? It would have to be an arranged gm, a la VT-LSU or FSU-Ala.
Georgia, Auburn, Alabama or Tennessee would pack the Dome if they arranged an attractive opponent. Would U attend a non GT ACC gm in the Dome? Would U attend a SEC gm there? Very interesting idea, huh?

Interesting thought...but I want our home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium. If Ole Miss or Miss St. want to do their away game with us at the GA Dome (like the one Auburn backed out of)...then that is fine with me.

One thing for sure....most every college in the southeast would have more fans at the Dome than we would.

I agree. I want all of our home games at BD.

I know Clemson played "at Temple" last year in Charlotte. If they're able to, Duke might play their game "at home" against Clemson in the dome. Duke always has trouble keeping attendance up to D-1 levels and Clemson would sell most of the dome, if not all of it to see Duke.

Clemson-FSU is probably the most lucrative ACC game for the Dome, besides maybe Clemson-GT. Although both schools do earn a lot on the road, they also earn when they play on the road. The two schools might agree to play the game for two years at the dome.

As far as GT playing in the dome, a home game against Clemson or FSU in the dome would probably benefit GT more financially, but it would also take away most of GT's home field advantage. The effect on both the game itself and recruiting would have to be weighed in such a decision.

College football in the South is played outdoors, in the sunshine, admiring coeds in sundresses, enjoying a cold beverage before, during and after the game.

There is no financial incentive to schools that can seat around 90,000 at home to play in a neutral site that seats under 80,000, unless promoters feel thay can pony up lots of cash up front. Therefore, I can't see FSU-Clemson as a choice for a dome game.

However, schools that have the smaller stadiums yet have good programs (I don't think the Dome is clamoring for Duke to move a game there) could have a finacial incentive. UNC, Miami, Md, BC, GT, UVA, and NCSU fit the profile best for moving their home games. I would not want to move home games from BDS, but if the money is tight and the deal is right, we may have to.

I know if it was a moneymaker, I would not mind seeing a four year rotation with the U having a game at each school's home, one at a neutral site in Florida - Orlando or Jacksonville - and one at the Georgia Dome. Or, an agreement like the original one with Auburn, three years, one at each school and one in the dome, is fine with me.

As for Southern football traditions, they did not play in domes, but off campus sites for games was not uncommon pre-1970's. Memphis - Ole Miss vs. UT, Legion Field - many Bama games, the Iron Bowl, plus Auburn-GT and Auburn-Tennessee, and Jackson for Ole Miss and Miss State games were sites of some classic games and good times. I even remember some fun day night doubleheaders in B'ham or Jackson, such as Tennessee-Auburn at 1 PM and Vandy-Bama at 7:30. That was pretty cool.

A September Georgia dome doubleheader with Georgia-Clemson in the afternoon and Tech-S. Carolina in the evening would bring in the kind of money to the Dome and downtown for a weekend that the payouts to the schools could be huge.

i would not agree to play an SEC power in the dome, we would be outnumbered in the crowd. the only ones i would agree to would be OLE MISS OR MISS STATE, since our fanbase is dwindling i prefer all games to be played at BDS.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the GT-UGA game move to the dome in time. Look at the other schools that do the neutral site thing - UGA/FLA for one. Athens seats more than the GA Dome; however, the average attendance would increase due to the increased capacity from BDS.

That said, I don't believe a singel Tech or Pooch fan would be in favor of the move for the first few years. It would still sell out each year in spite of the disagreement.

After the mega bucks that have been sunk into BDS, why give up our home field advantage to move to the dome, even for one regular season game?

We barely have any home-field advantage against the Mutts at BDS, there is no way in hell we'd move the game to the Dome. It would be a home game for UGAy every year.

I think we could make the dome fairly neutral against UGA. Let's say the dome and sponsors get 8,000 and each school 35, 000 a year - our season ticket holders' could all get a ticket to the UGA game annually with several thousand for students and families of players to spare.

As it is now, Athens is a sea of red with a corner of gold, and BDS has red in the southeast block, in every corner high and low except the northeast, the upper deck north end zone filled with Dawgs, and a generous sprinkling of red everywhere else.

there is no way in hell it would be neutral, they dominate us now and it would be played every year in a sea of red, a horrible idea, i dont think gt would be that stupid.

Even if GT "had" 35,000 tickets, many GT fans wouldn't pass up the money they could get from UGA fans. Even the GT student sections could be filled with UGA fans if the Dome doesn't check student IDs.

That said, our fan base is definitely not dwindling. Relatively small compared to UGA's, yes, but the number of season tickets has increased every year since the mid-90s, as has the average attendance. As the student body and the alumni base in Atlanta increases every year, so will the fan base.

Exactly.

Why is this even being talked about by the ACC? Don't they know that we just revamped our stadium?

Did you really ask that? More tickets = more revenue. The ACC doesn't care what color shirt the person is wearing.

If we ever move our home game to the Dome against the Dawgs I am done with GT. Because it won't be GT anymore. It will be GT run by hired guns who are doing nothing but maximizing revenues at the expense of our tradition.

There also might be more demand for a game in Atlanta than in Clemson or Tally, making up for the loss of tickets. Not that I'm sure demand would be higher in Atlanta, but just saying.

I also think people are getting too caught up about the possibility of UGA-GT in the Dome. That hasn't been mentioned as an actual possibility by anyone.
