Coach Gailey said "AJ is our starter". AJC writer, John Hollis, went on to say that Coach Gailey said the QB position WILL NOT be open for competition when the Yellow Jackets resume drills in April. AJ Suggs is GT's starting QB & will remain so going into the Spring practice period. Bilbo has yet to develope like the coaching staff hoped.
I truly hope the HC knows what the heck he is doing. If AJ shows marked improvement next season, as he should given that he is a rsSr with 1.5 yrs of starting experience, then Gailey looks like a genius. If Suggs turns in another yr like this past one, then Gailey will suffer a ton of criticism & alienate a large portion of the Tech fans.
I realize that Gailey's pretty honest, but these kinds of blanket statements & loyalty to a certain player or position could put Coach Chan in a very shaky job situation.
I truly hope Coach O'Brien knows what the salvation to do to improve our QB situation. One QB can't get it done with the chance & the other isn't even ready for the chance. Something has sputtered with the QB situation & NO ONE is coming up with an answer. We're just going along with the same production from the same people. Heck, it took a 2nd string WR to generate a sustained offensive drive vs Ga. Something is badly amiss.

Here's the article: Gailey says QB position NOT open to competition

If cg had said the job is ajs to loose that there is competition would have been ok.

In all my years of watching/participating/coaching sports, especially Football, I have to say this is THE SINGLE most perplexing thing I have EVER seen...

I have no idea what goes on in practices, but if Bilbo trew 100% interceptions, and/or miscalled EVERY play (from this alledged business of not knowing the plays or whatever - BTW, I don't buy it)
JUST based on his game experiences, which have been VERY impressive ( I was at the UNC game, and really, Bilbo looks like a man among boys), I'd AT LEAST GIVE HIM A FEW QUARTERS OF PLAY !!!!!!

Could someone PLEASE tell me what we would have to lose by playing Bilbo, maybe for a stinking HALF????????

WHats the worse thing that could happen ?
Turnovers ? Got them now
The team would tank (for some inexplicable reason?) - got that
We wouldn't move the ball ? Got it now

WHats the upside ? Its unlimited.

OK, then SCALE DOWN THE PLAYBOOK !!!!! How hard is this ????

Sorry for the caps, but this is clearly the single most frustrating scenario I have witnessed in my 45 years of being involved in sports.

Even from Gaileys point of view..Lets assume he truly believes that Biblo doesn't know the plays or the reads - whatever...Why not shut up the stockholders..Yea - those loudmouths who happen to pay your salary !! Put Bilbo in, and PROVE US WRONG !!!!!

Gold Rush... I would say that I have to agree... obviously I would hope that Suggs would make tremendous improvement and be a great QB... but I just dont see it happening... clutch decision making and performance under pressure is more inate than coached I think... Bilbo made some RS Frosh mistakes, but as Beeware has said many times already, Bilbo clearly has great upside potential... I would have much rather heard Gailey say he had hitched his wagon to Bilbo... but again, hope Suggs proves us all wrong.

These are the words of a stupid man. This is the same AJ that stragled on his own puke anytime there was any sort of pressure and if this man is foreclosing any possibilities for Bilbo to win the job, well then, He is a DAMN FOOL. This doesn't surprise me though, because CG has shown himself to be as stubborn as a missouri mule. This is the same AJ that couldn't scratch
his butt without bleeding himself to death over in Athens. And I could chronicle many other instances when AJ disappeared when the goings were tough. If Chan thought that AJ got booed this year he hasn't seen anything yet. When he sends SENIOR AJ SUGGS out to stink up Grant Fielf
next season I can guarantee him that the wolves will be howling. THIS IS SAD.

Will Bilbo be ready to start in '04, as a rJr, or will one of the Freshmen beat him out? Can O'Brien develope the talent Bilbo has in 3 yrs? Golly, we need to get a QB coach in here!

lawbee....no other horses in the stable?! Just a suggestion...go to the 2000 signees database on The Hive and read the entire summary of Bilbo with particular emphasis on his academics and "playmaker" comments. Then, even after discounting all of it since it's HS, I have to believe you will rethink the no horse statement. If still in doubt, pull out the tapes of the WF & NC games and you'll see first hand where the "playmaker" comments come from. We get very few kids the likes of DB athletically at Tech, but we get our brains beat out by them on Saturdays quite often. THWG

I've heard from a reliable source - a former coaching collegue of Gailey - that he isn't too bright. This may be evidence of that.

Or it may be evidence that John Hollis isn't too bright and is lacking as a reporter.

Time will tell.

This report might very well be Hollis's fault. He has goofed before and this is not a well written article. If things were misquoted or taken out of context then it should be corrected now! As far as the 2 qbs go there is absolutely no comparison between the inept aj and the athletic Bilbo. Bilbo has the same qualities of ATHLETIC ability as Vick. I'm not saying he is that good or will ever play anywhere near that level. But he does have a great arm and fast feet and good size. If this turns out to be true well if I were he I would transfer. In all the years of following Tech I have NEVER seen this combination at Tech before. What a waste.

My personal opinion is that Hollis took a leap of faith by writing that the competition wouldn't be open in the spring. If Gailey had said anything remotely close to that then why wouldn't Hollis have quoted him? The only quote he provides is that AJ will be our starter going into spring. That makes sense because Gailey doesn't believe Bilbo has a grasp of the offense yet (as referenced in the Macon article).

If Gailey is taking this stance then I've just lost all faith in him because no coach in his right mind would make that statement after the performance this year.

Also, Gailey has never really shown me a great ability to communicate to the press or Tech fan base. I'm hoping he does a little off-season training of his own to correct this before next season. Perhaps that would prevent these issues in the first place.

I wouldn't pay to much attention to this. Gailey was quoted in an article earlier in the week about how important next spring was for Bilbo and Bilbo was quoted to the effect that it might be his only shot at the starting job. As many times we we blast Hollis for getting stuff wrong, why would you guys choose to believe him this time? From all I can tell he's clueless about what is going on at Tech. And for the record I like Gailey but want a new QB next year.

Many on this board would believe it if it came from Lucifer itself if it gave them something to bash Gailey about. Hollis is an idiot and has screwed up tons of stuff since he has covered Tech

I cannot believe all of you believe what John Hollis writes...half the time he does not even have our players names right.

Gailey just wants to make sure that he leaves the door closed to any QB controversy...particularly a nasty one. Personally, I do not think Gailey should ever reveal how open or closed a position is...he should just point to the depth chart.

If anyone thinks a college coach would put someone on the field that is not the best player on that day...then you are gullable.

The AUC if infamous for trying to stir the pot at GT...heck, they tried to ruin O'Leary when he was the coach.

Hollis is an idiot. The QB position is there for Damarius's taking.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I agree. Look at the article and note that Hollis says that AJ is the qb (going into) spring drills implying there will be a new look at that time then in the next paragraph he states that Gailey says it is all set in concrete who will be qb with no competition. I just think Hollis leaves a lot of doubt as to how much you can trust what he says. And for those of you who think Gailey should come out and deny it up front if it is not true. All I can say is that he doesn't have time to chase down every missquote by every two bit reporter everytime he is missquoted just give him time aqnd we will see what he does in the spring I won't a new qb as much as anybody at this time but untill I know the total truth I am not going to jump to any conclusions because of anything I see written in the AJC.

We will see what the deal is come the end of spring. With all due respect to AJ, I don't want to see him as the starting QB next season. The reasons why have been stated by many. I believe that we've seen all we're going to see out of him.

That said, if I hear Gailey mention Bilbo not knowing the playbook one more time as an excuse for him not playing, I'm going to have to wonder whether or not our coach has a shred of a clue. Football games aren't played on paper.

As far as the article itself, I blame both John and Chan for the ambiguity of it. The article itself was poorly written and there's a lot of room for (mis)interpretation, but I don't think that Gailey bothered to elaborate much on what he said anyway. The way that Gailey remains tight-lipped on everything at any time during the year is a real turnoff for the fans, students, alumni, and the media. We deserve some answers. This isn't the NFL.

Gailey, despite all the hoopla and Dodd quotes at his hiring press conference, has been very unlike Dodd in his relations with the media.

I think that might be the problem. You know, Gailey is not an English magor - but rather majored in physical education from the esteemed bastion of academic excellence called the University of Florida.

I think this is an example of the consequences of the lack of quantity as well as lack of quality of communication with the press. Something didn't get translated properly. If Gailey would spend a little more time getting to know the press a la Dodd - as he promised to do - then I think this type of miscommunication would be less likely.
