Gailey The Offense Alcoholic!

I have no reason to think that he would lie about it.

I found this bit promising:

Gailey wasn't kidding Tuesday when he said the Jackets would re-emphasize kickoff coverage. The kickoff team stayed late Wednesday.
"We were working on it hard. We just stayed after practice working on it," said freshman linebacker Shane Bowen, who was on the kickoff unit. "We didn't perform like we should have last week."

Interesting that you're question whether Chan is hard headed enough to stay out of the playcalling, when many claim his biggest problem is that he's so stubborn (hard headed) about everything else.

Hard-headed as in not able to leave Nix alone to take the role. I was under the assumption that most fans are upset for his inability to open things up on O. What do mean by "everything else". D looks good. ST does not. O is what it has been under CCG. My post tried to express my shock that he is that stubborn to even let our "OC" take the responsiblility.

No sir. Your post implied that Chan lied to the reporter.

Let me restate then. My concern is his inability to let go. It is even more clear with this article. Did someone else force him to give the job to Nix? Is he not humble enough to realize that the O's negatives might come from his strategies with the O. He said, "I try to stay out of the meetings. Where you thought I was calling him a liar, I call him denying his motive to want to coach O. Why dig a hole by letting your fans know that you don't truly WANT to try something new on O.

I have no clue what your real point is then. He has said many times that he's an OC from way back. He's uncomfortable not calling plays. But he has decided, or been persuaded, that it's in the best interests of the team that he do so. To be sure he doesn't open his mouth and influence the calls, he's trying to stay completely away from the offense. I don't understand what's unclear about that.

I also don't know what
denying his motive to want to coach O.
even means.

The everything else I was referring to are the myriad of posts over the last few years about Chan's stubborness. In picking his QB and not being willing to change...in he style of offense he wants to run...in hiring a friend and not firing him...etc, etc, etc. I don't know that you have said any of that stuff, but it's been all over the boards. Just ironic is all.

Hi. My name is beej67, and I'm an offensoholic.

If you're a drunk, you need to stay out of the bar, so I've got to stay out of the meetings."

I'd think this is his actual goal. The prior quote seems to be what he thinks will happen if he goes to the meetings.

Also, the rest of the "blurb", it's not an article, says he didn't say anything while on the headset in the 2nd half.

That may be the first time he's let Nix take the majority of the "blame" for something regarding the offense.

I speculated to someone that our offensive problems in the past might have been due to Nix's game planning, instead of Chan's play calling, and that this year Chan is going to hang Nix out to dry by turning everything over to him to sink or swim. Either we produce this year offensively, or it's bye bye Nix, IMO. Chan's just making sure his ass is covered from the bashers who would have blamed him no matter who was responsible.

I don't necessarily blame CCG for that, but most coaches would have pinpointed the problem if it wasn't their misdoing. If you knew Nix was the problem, then why bother. I don't think Nix is the problem. Maybe with QB development, but how could playcalling or game plannng be his fault the past two years?

I doubt that beej, not the part about maybe it being Nix all along, that's an interesting thought. But the part about making sure his ass is covered. No matter who's responsible...Chan's responsible. He can say all he wants that it was Nix, but it's still his fault. There's no way to cover his ass IMO. He sinks or swims right along with Nix.

ahhh...we are getting warmer....but is not a butt covering maneuver of any kind.

CG has been pleased as a pig in slop about the changes he made in the offseason and the instant results from it. Do not be surprised if more changes happen if he does not see what he wants to see. He is seeing the value, and so are we, in him being a leader of the program instead of being in the nut mine while trying to lead.

Beej, I've speculated on that very thing myself, however, I really don't think Gailey is hanging Nix out to dry or doing it to cover his ass - he's never dodged blame for himself.

I do think that if the O remains a anemic as it has been that a replacement for Nix will be found.

he's never dodged blame for himself.

Too true.

And the 'CYA' comment above was pure speculation of course. I don't claim to have any actual knowledge of the situation. I'd be willing to bet, though, that if our O this year is worse than last year, or even if it's roughly equivilant and obviously loses us a game or three, that Nix is gone.

Maybe we could hire that head coach from Hoover High School. Hehe.

This is a difficult thread quite frankly. Chan's the boss, the buck stops there and he never seems to shirk his responsibility.

But, I remember Bill O'Brien too. I liked the guy but he didn't really pan out and he was supposed to be awesome. As a coach, I think you're screwed no matter what. Often you have to raise and teach a young passionate coach and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. You never really know I guess until they reach their maximum management point.

So far, however, it is way too early to know. Let's see how ND's defense plays against PSU for example and how our offense plays against UVA and VPI (or Troy for that matter).

Don't know O'Brien personally but it appears that the onlything he had going for him was that he worked under Friedgen. And when Fridge left O'Brien coached as if he'd been asleep the whole time Fridge was here.

If you correct your grammatically incorrect sentence, then maybe I'll bless you with a reply.
