Sources in Dallas tell us SMU is closing in on a hire to replace the deposed Phil Bennett. We are told to expect a “huge” splash. The hiring of either of the two names being mentioned would send shockwaves across Conference-USA. Expect an announcement soon after the Mustangs’ final game of the season. If the choice is who we’re hearing it could be, WOW! SMU will have hit a home run. Hint: The top candidate is at a BCS school with a disenchanted fan base – and it’s not an obvious choice. Athletic Director Stever Orsini has a history of making splash hires. This one figures to be no different.

OK, so I'm rumor mongering big time...but Orsini was the Associate AD at Tech....and GT is a BCS school.... and definately has a disenchanted fan base.... and it's not an obvious choice....

The only thing that casts doubt is calling it a home run...but maybe I'm too disenchanted...after all, this is Conference USA.

OK, so who else would it be?

Damn you Dem...You could have let us had a smidge of excitement before you crushed all of our souls.

Do you know this for a fact? Or are you just trying to silence us? He used the word "disenchanted" after all.

The only reason disenchanted would be a misnomer for the situation at Arkansas is, perhaps, that it is not strong enough of a word to describe the fan base's attitude towards Nutt.

Last I checked, none of our QB transfers have filed FOIA requests on Chan Gailey's cell phone records...

it's Fran

not gailey. Fran will agree to a lesser buyout if he's allowed to coach in the state of Texas next year.

Gailey would never voluntarily leave GT. He's got up to $4 million coming his way if he's fired.

I heard a week ago that Franchione would be stepping down at A&M and that he agreed to take just one year's salary as a buyout because SMU stepped in to complete his buyout and will announce him as their new head coach. Sounds about right now.

What about Charlie Weis? They have a disenchanted fanbase. And, you've got to admit, it would be a HUGE splash.

It's not gonna happen, but that would be huge. Let's hope it's Chan.

It's hard to believe that SMU, the only school to receive the NCAA death penalty, would hire Franchione who is on the verge of being fired for bringing the NCAA down on Texas A&M with his 'insiders' newsletter......along with gambling allegations!

Not sure I would consider Nutt or Franchione a home run, either.

Fran was my first thought too, but Gailey does fit that bill, as does nutt.

My A&M buddy in Texas hasn't heard anything about it.

See, here's the interesting part:

Hint: The top candidate is at a BCS school with a disenchanted fan base – and it’s not an obvious choice.
Fran is obvious. Nutt might even be more obvious than Chan. Fran would not be considered a "home run," to these guys, due to the death penalty / etc, not sure whether Nutt would or not. But Chan is fairly widely held to be a good coach nationally, if not at home. They might consider him a home run. Probably more of a home run than Nutt or Fran, anyway. And Chan is clearly the least obvious of the three.

Just saying..

You could probably add Tommy Bowden to that list too. Not sure of the splash factor, unless Clempsin does what we failed to do last year, but he fits the rest of the profile.

Then again, if you really want splash, the cannonball would be Callahan.

Solich? It said BCS, but even then, can Ohio really be that disillusioned?
