Chan Gailey TV33 Recap
Please forgive the incomplete sentences, spelling, etc… am in a hurry here…
Not much in here we don’t already know… but here it is anyway…
Tech announced the 2003 Tech and Auburn football game will be played at BDS@GF.
Question: How are things going? Been on the job 7 months, how are things looking?
Gailey: Freshmen report 8/2 with the remainder of the team 8/6. Enthusiasm and exitement is a notch higher, eager, anticipating what they are going to learn…. He is struggling with learning the NCAA rules, so far that’s been the toughest assignment
Question: How has coaching at a higher level prepared you for this?
Gailey: Feels fortunate to have been around a lot of great organizations and people… we are a product of our experiences. The product is the same, what you learn along the way and how it is applied is what matters.
Question: Did you envision being a part of NCAA football again.
Gailey: Thought he never would… talked to several colleges, but nobody wanted to wait for him to finish his commitment in the NFL.
Question: What can we expect to be the Chan Gailey signature?
Gailey: Great defense, put yourself in a position to win, opportunistic, fundementals.… offense will be a lot more wide open than what he has shown in his past .... did not install “his” offense. Feels fortunate to have kept BOB. Although we have new coaches, the system has stayed in place (in terms of offense)
Question: Playcalling
Gailey: Hopes he has suggestions. Does not want to meddle. He wants to make sure he is a positive input type person instead of something that will hurt the process.
The bottom line is to be productive and be successful. If our offense isnt working.. we will change.
Question: Who will be QB.
Gailey: AJ has the lead, but expects Bilbo to see playing time. But it all depends on what transpires during practice. He sees Bilbo on the field, but doesn’t expect a QB shuffle like Spurrier did.
Question: Is running back a concern?
Gailey: If you are looking for the easiest way to do things, it is easier to have that one back … a guy you can look to carry the ball 20-30 times a game, but we don’t have a proven player right now. Hollins is the leader… but we may be a tailback by committee team. It depends on what happens during practice.
Question: Defense looks like a strength this year, what are your comments.
Gailey: We have to have a strong defense, we are going to need this in order to give our offense time to come around. The strength of our defense is our linebackers, but you cant just depend on a good LB corp to carry your defense. We have to be well rounded, have to have play from everyone.
Question: How much do you know about this team?
Gailey: Knows some personalities, work ethic, toughness level, but until you get in games you don’t know. The winning edge is chemistry, teamwork and the mental toughness required to play the game. Feels he still needs to learn some of these things about individuals.
Question: How difficult was the experience in Dallas?
Gailey: If you let what other people say affect you, you are in the wrong business. The team was in transition, was getting old, and they were trying to win in the process. Jerry decided to make a change. Learned a lot, learned what he wouldn’t do, learned he never wanted to be the HC and OC again. You can not do both.
Question: What needs to happen to prevent another Dantzler fiasco?
Thinks the defense is built on speed. Tenuta is big on making sure you are in the proper lane, gaps, ets. If the team is built on speed, you should be able to prevent those things.
He has watched the film of last years Clemson game… knows what can happen when you don’t.
Question: How has Gary Johnson and Alfred Malone played into things in terms of the DL.
Gailey: Johnson did not practice much in the spring due to academics… told him to study… expects Malone to have much more of a presence this year… we wont ever have a team of 320 pound linemen… we probably always be a defensive team built on speed.
Question: What will Tenuta bring to the defense, will be blitz more, etc.
He brings a wealth of experience. Get a guy with a great deal of knowledge and experience, but our guys still have to go on the field and play, even if you have great speed, if you don’t make the tackle when you get there, it doesn’t matter.
Chan Gailey will be on TV33 each Friday night at 6:30… will do a preview show for the upcoming game.
Question: Question about Bilbo, (some guy calling from Miss.)
Gailey: Bilbo has made a lot of progress, but is not where he needs to be, and is not where he is going to be… he has a chance to be a great QB
Jermaine Hatch is expected to be 100%.. Curry has had a setback… not sure if he will be ready by the time the season begins.
Question: Who are some of the younger players he expects to contribute this year?
Gailey: Not sure.. maybe some of the DB and maybe some of the Receivers... its tough to call right now... depends on injuries, and how fall practice goes...
