why would Gailey say this? Call him honest, though, in telling recruits about our atmosphere/numbers of fans compared to others...???

Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey told Sabino not to expect 90,000 fans
to occupy Bobby Dodd Stadium on game days.

“They were actually in camp [on Saturday] when I got a chance to go to [Gailey’s] office,” Sabino said. “He told me if I’m looking for a big college atmosphere, Georgia Tech is not the place for me. He was very honest with me.”

I'm sure there was more to what he said than just that.

We're not a big college. The atmosphere at Bobby Dodd is excellent though, but we're not big by any means.

I've seen a lot of games at PSU over the years. That's a huge stadium, and they pack it every game. While it's fun and a good atmosphere, it's not as electric as GT in my honest opinion. That game last year against Miami was unreal here. That game and the big come back against UVA in the late 90's (forget the exact year) was the most electric I've ever seen it at GT. Fun stuff!!

GT has a solid college atmosphere but he's right, it's not as big as the other schools that Sabino is considering.

If someone looks at Bobby Dodd Stadium and thinks we could fit 90k in there they should probably be looking at a different school. Gailey was just being honest and stating the obvious.

It's still a great place to see a football game and we have a much nicer family atmosphere than most schools.

Because we don't offer a big college atmosphere, we off a small college atmosphere. Smaller stadium, smaller alumni base, more personal, but just as intense.

Bobby Dodd generates a lot of noise by putting the fans closer to the field. Having sat in Knoxville, it is nice to know that 90% of the fans in BDS can put a seat cushion on the field with a good throw.

Lane stadium in Blacksburg (65k) generates more noise than any 90k stadium that I've ever been to.

Bobby Dodd has its moments. If we have a good season this year, Sabino won't be disappointed with the atmosphere when he visits.

Just like last year....we are pushing our smaller, family atmosphere with a focus on academics...and the best combination of football and academics in the country.

If we try to compete by selling ourself as a football factory that piles in tons of people from surrounding rural areas...we will not win that battle.

In sales you play to your strengths.

...that is why it will be interesting to see how much longer UGA can play this new recruiting strategy as a academic and family focused organization...meanwhile players continue to get arrested left and right. Of course, it does not matter what UGA does and they will have good recruiting classes...they would have one even if they had no head coach at all.

I think CG's talking about the size of the school rather than game day. We aren't Penn St with 85,000 students.

Been there and done that!!!

Fish are fun to throw as well!!!

I just noticed that there's no link to an article anywhere. Where di this "quote" come from?

EDIT: NVM found it - AJC.

Amen to that. When it takes two or three relay throws to put cushion on the field the effect is really lessened.

based on the class coming in I would say WHATEVER CG is saying is WORKING

Well, even I have to doubt whether or not that quote came directly out of Gailey's mouth. That said, this kid obviously interpreted whatever he said to be just that.

While yes it is the truth, it certainly isn't what you want said in soliciting a prospect, so I have to somewhat agree that this is not the brightest admission by Gailey.

Really? Do you know something the rest of us don't? I like the kids we are getting based on measureables, but not to get into the star rankings anymore than they are worth, but none of these kids have been upgraded (yes it is WAY early) past 1 star. So if what CG said is working well and you can base that on the 4 commits we have in hand, then you must know something about these 4 kids that the rest of us cannot figure from the recruiting sites.

Now if you are basing that statement on last year's class, then I have to ask why are you looking in the rearview mirror? That was last year's class. This is this year's class. One class does not win you championships.

Eh, I'd take the statement by Gailey, and even the "direct" quotes from the prospect with a grain of salt, after all, it is the AJC recruiting section. The kid said that he liked Georgia Tech and Georgia. I think that is the most you should look into the report. If his head is screwed on correctly then he'll choose Tech anyway. GeeTee is just stirring the pot.

By the way, I am a grad student at PSU right now, and I have attended all of the home games for the past two years. Both PSU and GT have strengths to their gameday atmospheres. There is something to be said for a 106,000 person stadium full of screaming Penn State zealots, but when BDS is rocking, I would put it up against stadiums twice its size.

kids reporting school yesterday is "rear view mirror"

Calvin Johnson is rear view mirror.

• Yellow Jackets who made SN's national player rankings: Tashard Choice (No. 6 tailback), Mike Cox (No. 7 fullback), Andrew Gardner (No. 10 offensive tackle), Philip Wheeler (No. 5 middle linebacker), Jamal Lewis (No. 6 strong safety) and Durant Brooks (No. 3 punter).

when your tailback, fullback, and middle linbackers are all top 7 I would say you are recruiting quality players.

Also CG recruited they best WR in the history of GT and arguably ACC and NCAA.

To have 6 players listed in the top 10 at their position is pretty solid especially when you consider these same players were being ripped by SOME GT fans when CG was signing them.

I think MOST believe recruiting is getting BETTER and these guys listed are NOT part of that assessment.

It is has been a slow process for CG to build recruiting, but I think we are now starting to see those benefits. The class that checked in yesterday is one of GT's BEST EVER and that is with limited scholarships.

The best part of all this is that I MOVED TO THE 45YD LINE, so I am putting my $$$ where my mouth is and SUPPORTING GT!

14-0 BABY! Get on the CG bandwagon while there is space!

I just don't see the problem here. Evidently the kid was more concerned about how many would be in the stands to see him do his thing on the field. Big deal,
the coach was straight up w/him and I admire that.
If the kid is smart enough to get into GT, then he ought to be smart enough to see that Bobby Dodd ain't no UT Neyland Stadium. Maybe he just needed to be reminded. Could be that playing for GT was not the highlight of his life. Could be a big stadium was his main ambition. So be it. I'm more concerned that the link at the bottom of the post was not a link to anything except a bunch of guys in the "head". Can't imagine why that was in there.

Guys....Travis Howard, Etienne Sabino's teammate that toured UGA and GT with him last weekend...said in his interview that he loved the GT campus...the stadium...and the way the buildings overlooked the stadium. He then went on to call out UGA's campus and say that it was not that impressive.

Also remember that Daryl Richard and Derrick Morgan (among others) also noted they liked the family feel over the big college atmospheres. To top it off....Daryl and Derrick exchanged cell phone numbers with Etienne to stay in touch with him.

Guys...facts are stubborn things...we are playing to our strengths. There are many drawbacks to the big schools...we are not a big school. That was the point.
