Postulate: Chan Gailey was Bobby Dodd with opposite luck.



Discuss.
 
While I wasn't around for the Dodd era, I have heard their coaching styles be compared numerous times. Whether it's true or not i don't know, but I will say that luck over a period of time is called consistency.
 
The game and opponents are also a lot different now than they were with Dodd.
 
The reason I mention it, was that Dodd was an ultra conservative coach, and maintained a similar sort of demeanor in public as Gailey, and over the course of his tenor at Tech the ball always seemed to bounce his way, to the point where other guys (e.g. Bear Bryant) used to call it "Dodd's Luck." Go back over the Chan era and we could have easily had one BCS berth, probably 3 wins over Georgia, and an average of 8 or 9 wins overall, if the ball bounced our way a few more times.

I think Chan's just cursed. And clearly you don't want a cursed guy running your program, so clearly you need to fire him and move on, but honestly, we fell short every year due to dumb luck.
 
The game --particularly from an offensive standpoint-- was so different 40-50 years ago. Chan Gailey's offensive philosophy probably does fit in better during that era.

It's either lack of ability, or it's really really really bad luck. And I don't want a coach with no ability, nor do I want a coach who's that astoundingly unlucky, so either way he needed to go.
 
Look good coaches make their own luck. Dodd wasn't as conservative as some would like you to believe. We had good offenses that could score anywhere on the field. Luck is generally made by well coached players who execute the fundamentals every time with very few lapses. You can see that now with our esteemed in state rival Mark Richt. That is the difference between him and Donnan.

I agree with the luck part. He had us in places to win. It seemed like it's right there ALL the time we can never just pull it in. I hope that changes with the new coach. My dad's getting too old for the heart attack games I call 'em. Maybe we're due for some games where we blow 'em out... Just think GT 51- Ugay 7 that would be a nice change.

Anyone who regularly punts on third down is conservative in my book.
 
Of course, Dodd was also lucky enough to produce 7 1st Team All-Americans in his first six years, and inherit some kid named Frank Broyles to run his offense.
 
The demographics of the Deep South student athlete have changed dramatically from Dodd's day. The coming of the African-American player had as much to do with (a) leaving the SEC; and (b) Dodd's retirement as anything else. He immediately saw the challenges ahead vis a vis recruiting in competition with the large state universities. And he was probably correct. His time was rapidly coming to an end.
