GASO vs Ark State tonight

Arkansas State outrushed Eagles 325-165. And 61 of Southern's yards came on one run. So the rest of their carries averaged 2.5 per carry.
Arkansas State was averaging 80 yards a game on the ground.

Did they get an insta-ban? :naughty:

No. It's pretty one-sided on there right now. Not a lot of love for the current coaching regime, and now some acrimony toward the AD who hired him.
One of my closest friends, who is a huge Georgia Southern fan, texted me after the game - "I'm done."

Don't they know how hard it is to recruit at Georgia Southern? Georgia St is building a new football stadium. How is Southern supposed to keep up with that?

I'm starting to question Southern's commitment. How can they be expected to beat GSU with less stuff?

SWMBIOT went to Southern and had the game on last night. They led into the 4th Qtr and then lost.

Why? No running game. Trying to run the clock and you get negative running yardage and incomplete pass on 3rd down. Defense can't hold. Other team touchdown! This happened twice at the end of the 4th and they lose. Suprise.

The new coaching staff at Southern decided to throw away the option running attack re-installed by Monken (currently 3-1 @ Army) and tweaked by the last coach (Bought by Tulane) and go with an "air raid" offense. Who cares if it worked at Vadosta HS or Valdosta State. That's HS & Division 2 NOT 1A (FBS).

Does this make any sense? You have a team built for an option running attack and you install air raid? AND forget how to run?

Let's look at GA Southern history. The last time they hired a coach who threw away the option for something better was Brian VanGorder (The 1 year the current coach coached at Southern) followed by Hatcher (Valdosta State). We all know how well that worked.

If I was the AD at Southern and my Head Coach got bought by some other school my first call would be to Paul Johnson asking for his next in line or try to find out how much money it would take to buy N Dakota State's coach.

It looks like our game against Georgia Southern just got a whole lot easier than the last game.

NoDak states coach is a Saban fallacy at the FCS level. That program is winning games the coach wouldn't win elsewhere. There's something in the water over there.

Southern lost that game because they couldn't defend the one zone read run play ark state has on the perimeter. They started overcommitting on the outside then couldn't defend it on the inside. If they'd been able to respond to that one play they'd have won that game.

That said, if they trot that effort out against us we are going to burn them badly. We won't attempt a pass because it'll be unnecessary. Not worried about that game at all.

The thing that concerns me from what I watched of the game was how quickly Southern's defensive linemen could get upfield. Arkansas State's QB was always running for his life on passing downs. However, they also had poor tackling and bad angles so he was able to make something out of nothing. I'll delete this post in an hour.

Why did they hire a coach who runs a non-option offense? Like the AD had to know this was coming right?

They hired a guy who had been DC at Colorado State for, what, one year?
My Boro peeps have not been glowing in their reviews of Summers, even before last night.

They have been running some option, going out of the gun and using the guy in motion as the pitch guy. But Breida, coming off back to back big years, has been a non-factor this year. The passing game actually looks a little better than last year but Upshaw looks banged up and defensively, they don't appear to be very good at pass coverage.

they're not going to get Brent Pry, who was DC there under Monken, they're not going to get Ivin Jasper from Navy, who was an assistant under PJ at Southern. There are some folks who want to get Jamey Chadwell, from Charleston Southern, I think?
