Johnson’s bowl record is one of the only things about his tenure that I really find fault with. We often looked awful in bowl games.

Could have been the “time to prepare” thing, or rust on our side. Could have been punching above our weight in some of them, I guess. Could be malaise from getting shafted by the selection process repeatedly.

Nice look at the history of GA Tech football. Thanks, Fletch.

I also think it was mostly rust on our part, and secondarily more time for the opposition to practice specifically against the option. A third reason is those were mostly better teams than we had been playing that found us a bit rusty (#1) and with them having the additional practice (#2).

Just my $.02 worth.

We lost the Orange Bowl to Iowa in 2009 because of two things - Iowa's coach is no idiot - Ferentz has forgotten more than most coaches ever knew. Secondly, I still have nightmares about Adrian Clayborne chasing Dwyer around in our own endzone. We could have run the quadruple option and still not figured out how to keep that guy out of our backfield. Iowa's DL had not one but TWO NFL first round draft picks and we were still only one TD down with a couple min left.

LSU and Iowa both flatly out athleted along the LOS us in those bowls. By 2014, our OL could hold their own, but the DL had badly regressed.

How many of those LSU guys from the Peach Bowl and Iowa guys from the Orange Bowl went to the NFL? Seemed like the entire front seven for both played at least a little bit. Ferentz had Norm Johnson running his defense and PJ even talked about how much experience against the option Norm Johnson had in the pre game presser.
The first Sun Bowl game with PJ was one we just gave away. That was Al Groh doing his best Ted Roof imitation.
And I am never going back to Shreveport. No f'n way.

Hey now, the 2014 D line had Pat Gamble (a very underrated player) and Adam Gotsis. And an all ACC freshman in Keshun Freeman. The secondary was pretty good too - Milton, DJ White, Isaiah, Jamal Golden. We may have given up points but we got a ton of turnovers that year

That late December night in 2014 in south Florida was just glorious. You know, Missy State still outgained us. But who gives a ----? We beat that ass and that team had Dak Prescott, Chris Jones and one or two other guys who may still be in the league. You could tell by the start of the fourth quarter that they just didn't want to be there anymore.

The 2016 Gator Bowl was nice too. That was a pretty decent Kentucky team that year and I vividly remember little Stoops yelling across the field at CPJ about something.
They had two DL go down due to non contact injuries but Stoops went full Beamer mode.

Also, CPJ going for it on 4th and 2 from our own 27 or something was ööööing wild that game, too.

Fourth and 1 from our own 16 with 3:26 left in the half. Zone dive with Mills.
We got a chop block the next play but then got 20 on the counter option, with 15 tacked on for facemask? Led to JT's touchdown right before the half.

Looking at that list of bowls, I noticed a related fact: The 25-year span, from 1942 to 1966, GA Tech had only 2 losing seasons and went to 16 bowls. That was the end of Alexander's tenure and the entire Dodd era. GA Tech had the 6th best winning percentage over that time at .719 (190-72-8).

Following on from that, the 24-year span, from 1995 to 2018, GA Tech had only 4 losing seasons and went to 20 bowls. That was the entirely of the O'Leary (7), Gailey (6), and Johnson (11) tenures. GA Tech had the 34th best winning percentage over that time at .594 (180-123).

Kind of highlights how college football had changed.

In between, the 28-year span, from 1967 to 1994, GA Tech had only 12 winning seasons and went to only 7 bowls. That was the entirety of the Carson (5), Fulcher (2), Rodgers (6), Curry (7), Ross (5), and Lewis (3) tenures. GA Tech had the 71st best winning percentage over that time at .479 (146-159-8). What an outlier CBR was in that group!

Time to prepare. Good teams can figure out the TO.

That has nothing to do with how college football changed. It had everything to do with Georgia Tech not changing. We did not adapt while others did. That’s on us not on them. It’s really sad especially in light of how the other in state school did adapt.

I actually believe Curry had possibilities to have a good career. He had changed perceptions in recruiting and had them believing in themselves. Then he got over ambitious and it but him in the butt

Q: If college football didn’t change, why did the other schools have to adapt, and why did GA Tech, who stayed the same, fall behind?

A: College football changed.

If I remember correctly we were going to run out of time until Stoops called timeout which gave us enough time to roll out Butker.

JT scored with 50 seconds - and we got the ball back (blocked a punt?)
JT hit Brad going out of bounds on fourth down right near the stick with 1 second left
So they had a bunch of stuff to review, Stoops blew a gasket and we got 10 points in the last minute

I remember Stoops being an absolute moron and helping to increase our lead while I mirthfully laughed at the TV.

We were at the game and asked ourselves "what the hell is he doing? thanks for the free timeout, dumbass!"
