Georgia Tech Movie/TV References

'87,
I think drownproofing was dropped in 1985 as a graduation requirement.

87 or 88 (The article conflicts as it says it was a graduation requirement until 88 but dropped from the curriculum in 87.)

I never knew they totally dropped it when it was dropped as a graduation requirement. Of course, it might have been tough to fill the class with no requirement.

Thanks!

Well, Wikipedia does occasionally get it wrong. Perhaps the 84 Catalogue was the last catalogue that included it as a requirement--hence till 88. The 85 catalogue is the first catalogue that doesn't include it. And they didn't need to offer it after 87?

I have no idea, but it does explain all the dates.

That brings back more fond memories, especially the punched card chase in the gym. My hat is off to you, sir, for the way you put yourself through school. You're the kind of guy that made Tech great in our day and thereafter.

That punch-card system was great. I got science-fiction literature as a freshman. We met once a week in PJ Haley's Pub for three hours: drank beer and talked about time-travel. The prof had a pitcher of beer every week by himself.

I will never be able to film, but I will create a graphic novel series about famous GT players and coaches. My first project will be on Clint Castleberry, my favorite GT player of all time.

By the way, I think we need to take note of your completely copy cat Miami wannabe avatar. Why would we ever want to distinguish GT by copying a stupid Miami wanna be thug expression?

Gay as hell.

Doesn't make much sense to me either. Whenever I see it, I think of this:

The Brooke Shields pic...People, August '81

How the heck did you find that online?

I Googled every way I could think and directly surfed People to no avail.

P.S.
Found it with the John Travolta connection. And found this odd excerpt about her movie "Endless Love" that she made when 15, 16 in this picture with Travolta. Was that legal?

When I was with the double, it was closer to actually making love," says Hewitt. Brooke, in contrast, counted on the ingenious inspiration of director Franco Zeffirelli for her close-ups in lovemaking scenes; he stood off-camera and squeezed her big toe until her pain produced a look that could pass for ecstasy. "Brookie and I became good friends," Hewitt says, "but we're not close."

After the scene, Brooke Shields had to pay Hewitt $7.2 million to stop causing her immense pain.

Well first of all, Miami is always predicted to be coming back to greatness. They aren't that good at football lately and their recruiting isn't good, so maybe they owe their media hype to their logo. I wouldn't mind having a logo look like Miami's if we got all the media attention they do. Secondly, I didn't start this. These guys did --->http://www.stingtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19705
And most importantly, I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT MY FREAKIN' AVATAR!!!

lets just say he has it "firmly" etched into his memory :ughjerkit:

Wreck Em,
Personally I like your avatar and think it has lots of potential for a license plate and/or t-shirt. Anyone else agree?

Esso',
I remember the Robbery and a sandwich shop operation being underneath the TECH tower, took social studies classes in the old shop building. When it burned down I got a brick from the rubble and my second-ex covered it in a nice needle point thingy of the tower. The bookstore was located somewhere else over toward the post office by then.

End of fall quarter my freshman year the registrar's office sent everyone a punch card Christmas card, with the statement that 'this card may be folded, spindled or mutilated'.

Was watching the documentary about UNLV Runin Rebs last night..they reference us as their final 4 opponent.....they came back from double digits to beat us--then beat duke by 30 in the championship

Tonight, 1 April the Military Channel is showing 'The Great Santini" a 1979 movie about a Marine F-4 Pilot in the early 1960's. In the oldest son's room is a Georgia Tech fooball pennant. It has the old 'bee' on the wide edge. This is shown in the part of the movie after he beats Robert Duvall in the basketball game.

Now, when I took the class, we met in the prof's (Bud Foote) house....it was BYOB. I only took it twice, but there was some who took it every quarter.

I had Bud Foote also! Remember his white socks,pull-on tennis shoes, and big paper clip for a tie clasp?
During spring quarter we would meet under the trees beside the library and brown bag beers. Damn good prof!

Come to think of it, we did meet at his house one time,he lived out PDL toward Zestos and the all night market I think.

Yep. It was one of the best buildings on campus when I took drownproofing. I was awed by the pool, shower and locker facilities. The gym had stuff that I had never seen before, much less used. I enjoyed working out there.

A number of years later -- after it had been decommissioned -- I revisited it. It was a dump. Sad.

Some of you may also recall that all those years when Bobby Dodd was kicking ass in the SEC, our locker and shower facilities under the east stands of Grant Field were pathetic. My old high school had comparable if not better facilities.

Classroom facilites? How many of you remember taking math in the Old Shop Building or buying books in the cellar of the Knowles Building? Who remembers the Robbery being beneath the Ad building, or the open air GT post office? Foggy remembers. Who else?

We've come a long way. A long way. And it wasn't cheap. Or easy.

The gym is on the right and adjoing it to the south is the indoor pool. The building to the west center of the stadium is the Knowles.
ESSO, that's a great picture. I remember when they were demolishing the Naval Armory to build the Edge center. They had a wrecking ball, and let the GT football players push the ball at the building for a photo op. Barely made a scratch. Those walls were about 2 ft thick.
