Georgia\'s Offense...

There's a good thread on the Hive about UGA's offense (or supposed lack thereof).

How would you guys rate their offense? I'd say they have awesome potential. But the recent injuries combined with MR's sometimes odd play-calling keeps opponents in games and keeps them from running up the score. If you look at UGA's offense, they had a really good game against Bama and a great game against KY. Outside of that, they've been hit and miss. In the 2nd half of the Auburn game, they got everything moving. But in the 1st half, they couldn't hardly gain an inch. They've had many other games and stretches of games where they simply looked out of synch.

Part of the problem is their OL. Those guys have gobs of experience. But, for some reason, they haven't been dominant this year. I'm not sure why. They don't run block badly, but not huge holes either. Their pass blocking is good sometimes, but they often look confused by blitzes. Greene ran for his life against Auburn and UF. I think their OL coaching has not been great by any means.

Another problem has been their QB rotation. This Shockley/Greene rotation has not worked. When MR does it, he's doing a favor to the opposition. I hope he does it for our game.

The bottom line is that UGA wins with defense and outstanding special teams. Their defense keeps the game in hand until their Offense figures out something that works. They often don't click until the 2nd half if they click at all. Their kicking game gives them a chance to win when the game is close.

Tuberville should be fired for sticking his head in the sand in the 4Q and trying to run the clock out. He gave the Dawgs 3 possessions on his side of the 50 in the last 5-6 minutes with a tiring defense. They still should have pulled it out, but the Dawgs have some quality on offense. If you try to overblitz Greene he knows how to burn you. You need to do it in a sneaky sort of way, not showing it.

Very true. With their offense, it seems like they've nearly always got a "safety valve" receiver open. And they love to run what I call the "FSU play." Play-action lob pass to the wide open fullback or tight end streaking down the middle of the field and is wide open 90% of the time. Bobby Bowden loves to run that play and so does Richt (remember UT/UGA last year?). Georgia always seems to use the tight end effectively against us. I can still hear Kim King saying "watch the tight end" during the '99 UGA game. Randy McMichael and the other TE ate us alive.

I can't remember which game I was watching a couple weeks ago, but one team was using a 3-4 defense with one blitzing linebacker on every play. The offense knew it was coming, but didn't know where it was coming from. With our speed at LB (maybe even drop a def. end back as a linebacker), I think that kind of set would get results.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

I agree that their defense & special teams have accounted for the majority of their wins this season. They have great talent on their offense but they seem to suffer from that "Randy Moss mentality" of only playing when they feel like it.

Musa Smith is a inconsistent back. He has great talent but only seems to show it in flashes rather than for a full game.

Greene is the most consistent player on their team but has been hampered by the QB rotation.

The OL has tons of talent but seems to get caught sleeping during middle of the game. Usually step it up at the beginning and end of games.

The WRs have been inconsistent for years. Their best guy, Gary, is out and that is huge for them. Other than him, the rest of the guys remind me a lot of the Raider receivers from years back. They have ton of speed but drop the ball way too much.

That being said, they are still the most dangerous offense that we have faced this season. The potential for them to put together some big plays is there on almost every down. This will certainly test our defense.

The key will be to shut them down on their first couple of drives of both halves. If we can do that and have some moderate success on offense, I think you will see UGA push too hard near the end and make some costly mistakes. We will also not be able to go into a safe mode in the second half because that is what has allowed UGA to come back on some teams this year.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

They have been able to pass to the Tight End on us for years. I don't know what it is about our defense (or perhaps it is just the college defenses in general) but that and the screen pass seem to always be open when we play UGA.

Also, our defense seems to have closed the hole over the middle a little the past couple of games but it is still our weak spot. I am pretty sure they will keep trying to hit the TE & RB out of the backfield for most of the day. I would also be wary of the WR dragging across the middle. That could be the most dangerous play we see since they have the speed to turn those plays into big yardage.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

ramblinwise1 is right on about Tubby...no excuse. What's scary is we have the same tendency.

As for ugag not clicking until the 2nd half...it's all about adjustments...also not good news for us as we seem to do very little...i.e. not scoring at all or at least not anything meaningful in the MD,VA,fsu, or Duke. Against NCSU, obviously we had a great team effort that is not to be minimalized, however without the penalty against us that gave us another down, we probably not only do not win but lose big. Again, it was 2nd half blues.

0 in 2nd next Sat= rout. THWG

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

Speaking of 0 for 2nd half, the stats don't lie...

We've only scored 93 pts in the 2nd half (37% of total) all year. Here's a breakdown of just the 2nd half scores this year...

Tech-14, Vandy-3
UConn-14, Tech-3
Tech-13, Clemson-7
Tech-21, BYU-9
---------------------------
Tech-3, UNC-0
Wake-14, Tech-7
MD-28, Tech-7
UVA-15, Tech-0
Tech-21, NCST-14
FSU-7, Tech-0
Tech-0, Duke-0

Especially since the BYU game (w/ exception of State game), there's no doubt we've been a first half team - scoring just 2 total TDs in 5 of the last 6 games. For whatever reason, we go into a shell and play not to lose instead of playing with a killer instinct.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

Normally, poor performances in the second half are due to poor substitution prcedures and/or trying not to lose the game instead of trying to win the game.

Georgia has been inconsistent on offense and very aggressive on defense. They possess some excellent talent at the skilled positions, and have scored some needed points on individual efforts.

Musa Smith looks exceptional to me as a runner. He is strong, quick, and doesn't give up after the first attempted tackle.

I don't really think their offensive game plans have been great.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

Here's what I'd like to see a repeat of...

code:

Rushing Rush Yds TD Lg Avg
--------------------------------------------
Musa Smith 11 12 0 5 1.1

That, of course, is Musa's line from the 2000 Tech game.

Re: Georgia\'s Offense...

Our best chance of winning is too somehow get ahead and hold on.Not a great chance but Ga seems to play just well enough to win at end and maybe they will stumble this time. imho
Its great to have a Defense for a change.Go Jackets.
