Midshipmen and the Black Knights are on getting it on now!
The Navy rules the seas and this here football game!

My brother was 1st Cav 1969 GO ARMY BEAT NAVY! I was AIR FORCE MYSELF!

Paul Johnson (another cutie) is a very, very good coach. Didn't he coach in the state of Georgia about the time Tech was looking for a head coach?

Suzi, you are so transparent it's pathetic.

Navy is taking the SEC slot in the Houston Bowl, in Houston, Tx, with an 8-4 record. Navy also won The-Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the 1st time since 1981 by beating both Army & Air Force in the same season.
Navy plays Texas Tech, 7-5, in the Houston Bowl. How many pts will TT score? I say at least 50. TT will probably win by 30 pts, but Navy sure made a comeback & deserves a huge congratulations on their season.
Paul Johnson, formerly the HC of Ga Southern, deserves more credit than I can give in this space.

The option is one of the best offenses for a team with less talent. It allows you to fool many of the defensive players as opposed to blocking them on every play.

It allows you the advantage of having to block less of the defense, because the options have a lot of them out of position to make the tackles.

It allows decent runners to use their speed and running ability in less dense areas of defense.

Course it hasn't lasted at Nebraska either. I don't think you can be a pure option team anymore. I haven't seen enough of Navy to know whether they are or not, but if you can't pass you can't win.

What was the year we handed it to Notre Dame without throwing one pass...1976?

I know things are different today because of faster defenses.

LLCoolJacket, you are right, we did handle Notre Dame without throwing a pass.

It is also true that over a period of time the defense catches up to an offense. An inferior team has to look for advantages against superior teams. Some do it with the option (Air Force for many years), some with passing (Edward Lavelle of BYU), and some use other innovative hybrid schemes.

I am a firm believer in adapting an offense or defense according to the talent you have on the team. A coach has to be innovative to win at a school with limitations on its ability to recruit the best athletes.

agreed, and don't forget our old friend June Jones and what he is doing at Hawaii.

Johnson is a great coach. He was the offensive coordinator at Navy the last time they were any good in 1996 (when they won nine games and went to a bowl game). We all know what he did at Ga. Southern.

The question with Johnson is whether the option can be successful in a major conference anymore. I heard an interview where he said that he thinks it can if you have the athletes. I cannot say that I know. Maybe it can be. It had been written off in the late 80s and early 90s and Nebraska suddenly won championships with it.

Johnson could have been hired as our football coach at Georgia Tech but Braine was intent on pulling a smooth one.

Father Wasp, again you are grasping at straws. Place the bios of Gailey and Johnson on the desk of every business owner and AD in America, and I feel confident most every one would have chosen Gailey over Johnson.

If that is called pulling a smooth one, then most owners of businesses and ADs would have pulled a smooth one. That places Braine in good company. I am sure he appreciates the compliment from you.

By the way, since the committee also approved of the deal, they are pretty smooth also.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Not true. Johnson had already been talking with Navy and was planning to go there. He signed on with Navy within 5 days of O'Liar going to ND.

We never had a chance to get him.

Having a son who played at Air Force

Paul Johnson has done a great job for
the Naval Academy and will do even better
when he recruits his own players. He has
been a winner every where he has coached.

Since I was a ground pounder, here's hoping Ross can make a difference at Army. However, at 66, I hope he has hasn't forgotten too much.

Ahso: Now I see why we never agree on anything except patriotic issues. Go Midshipman! But goodluck to the home of Blanchard and Davis, the Black Knights of the Hudson.

By the way, I have not heard that Bobby Ross is going to West Point. If that is true, I say Bully for them! Talking about upping the ante. Without a doubt he would be successful in that enviroment.

Stateline, I would be optimistic if he were younger, but his age worries me some here.

Big thing for Army is that IIRC they are getting out of C-USA so their overall schedule should get easier. With a new coah, whether Ross or not, they should be able to compete better.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the schedule. It has everything to do with the coaching staff. Army '03 will go down as the worst team in college football history. This is completely unfair as the truth is that they were the worst COACHED team in the history of organized football, at any level.

Army's schedule is not that tough. C-USA is not terrible, but it ain't the ACC/Big 12/SEC, either. The whole schedule thing is a completely empty excuse used by a worthless AD and a spineless superintendent.

The problem with the CUSA schedule was playing 8 games against Who Gives a $hit University. Army replaced games with BC, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Penn State, etc. with Cincinatti, Houston, and East Carolina. That's why they're leaving CUSA.

The talent level at Army is fairly constant. With the exception of the occasional impact player at a skill position, the level of talent never really changes. The coaching staff has to stress discipline, toughness, and fundamentals to be successful. Todd Berry was a disaster and his teams lacked all 3 of these qualities.

Bobby Ross will be perfect at USMA. He is one tough, ornery SOB who will not accept the stupid mistakes that Army has made for the last 5 years.

Sorry to go on so long.
