It's only Thrusday. I just got my tickets to the game....now I am ready for it to be Saturday.

Couple of things real quick:

Injuries:
Senior guard A.J. Smith has missed the last two days of practice due to illness and will not start Saturday, Johnson said. Redshirt freshman Joseph Gilbert, who started the first six games until Smith replaced him, will reclaim his starting spot.(AJC)

Al Groh (UVA HC) had this to say about PJ's offense:

Coach Paul Johnson often breaks down his offense into the basics: blocking the right guy, getting defenders on the ground, knowing when to pitch and when to keep. In other words, it’s not rocket science.
Al Groh might disagree.
The Viriginia coach took an odd tangent when asked this week about Johnson’s offense.
“That style of offense has got a long history,” Groh began. “Some years back it was the prevalent style of play, so it’s not as if something has been invented that never worked before.
“I was trying to think of a good analogy the other day, but space flight has come a long way since the first launchings, but it’s a lot more sophisticated and a lot more intricate and we can do things with those rockets and go to the moon now. Heck, all they were trying to do with the first one was do a couple of orbits. Now we’re sending people to the moon, but it’s still rocket flight.
“You know, this is still a wishbone-based offense. It’s just a more sophisticated, more souped-up version.” (AJC)

Any comments on this....I think Al Groh is pretty accurate, it is a wish-bone but way more advanced making it not really a carbon copy of past wish-bones.

Also, I am not sure there was much difference in A.J. Smith starting and Gilbert our O line still looked pretty bad. Do you think this will hurt us much?

I don't think that Gilbert will hurt out O-line whatsoever. I am not too worried about that. I am just anxious for this darn football game to start. We are now less than 48 hours away ....

Obviously I know less football than Al Groh... ok maybe not. But it pisses me off when people refer to PJ's offense as The Wishbone. Its not even close. Its not even the same formation. People need to learn this is not the wishbone. Its a spread formation more similar to the Run and Shoot but it brings the wingbacks or A-backs in our case closer to the tackles where you can run a full variety of option run plays or pass plays. It's like a running option version of the run and shoot offense. It doesn't even resemble the wishbone other than it is an option based offense.

You remember the NFL version of the run and shoot from back in the early 90's. Ok, same offense. Take the wingbacks and bring them right off the tackles instead of 10 feet from the tackles. Instead of having wide receivers play the wingback, find yourself some smaller runningback types. That is our offense.

Wishbone is also the description that Sylvester Croom used when describing our offense. We know how well the defensive strategy worked out for Mississippi State.:D

I also hate when they call our offense the wishbone.

To me that is a wishbone and our A-Backs are never in that set in our base formation, although they may motion into a wishbone it never starts like that. (although PJ might bust it out from time to time)

We look like this...

Actually, it pretty much is. We run the wishbone veer, except with the bone 'broken' and we reform half the bone with presnap motion.

That's why other coaches call it a wishbone. You defend it like you would a wishbone, because the running plays are the same. And 75% of our plays are runs, so 75% of the time we're essentially a wishbone team. The only "trick" is that we can more easily transition into the other 25% than a wishbone team could.

It's a 40s offense with a trick.

And that makes it AWESOME.

But it pisses me off when people refer to PJ's offense as The Wishbone.
Sometimes it pisses me off too. Except when its the head coach of the team we are playing next. He just spent a whole week teaching his team how to defend against an offense that we won't be running.

Doofus.

It looks nothing like the wishbone Pepper used to run. Just because we run 75% of the time doesn't make it a wishbone.

In Houston we ran the run and shoot, no running game. In Buffalo we ran K-Gun, we had one of the top running games for 5 years.

JD, did you ever run a cut blocking scheme in the NFL or college? Just curious.

I am curious as to who JD is, if you don't mind me asking, basing from the quote the tag name refrigerator mover.

Anyways, Listening to the PJ radio show he says and I quote, "The main reason I didn't opt to vote in the coaches poll is because I think it's stupid....I can't sit there and tell my team that I believe in them all week to win, and oh by the way, I just voted you 19." :laugher:

Thanks Asimperson,

Congrats JD on all of your accomplishments. My dad is a huge Bills fan, he's from there.

Anyways, let's get out there guys and be the 12th man!
