Gone: T.J. Barnes and Izaan Cross
Barnes was one of the bigger (pardon the pun) disappointments in recent GT football history. After hearing about how great he was going to be during his RS year, he never really delivered like you would expect a 360LB NG to do. We needed a dominant player in the middle of the CAG 3-4 defense and he really didn't get it done. Barnes had trouble getting low, a problem that he never really resolved throughout his career, and was very slow off the snap. That lack of leverage and quickness caused him to get pushed out of plays far too often for a guy his size. He was invited to the NFL combine, which was a huge surprise to me. It will be interesting to see if teams get wooed by his size like we all were. Hopefully they won't watch much film.
Cross was an enigma. He showed some promise as a true freshman that had most of TECH nation optimistic about his future contributions. Despite repeated glowing reports about his off-season work and renewed focus, Cross never really established any level of consistency. He had some good games, but he never established himself as a player that the OCs would have to account for. He made some plays at times but would inexplicably disappear for quarters at at time without making an impact.
Returning: Dieke DE (RSR), Crenshaw DE (RSR), Cummings DE (RSR), Green DT (RJR), Williams DE (RJR), Kitchen DE (RSO), and Gotsis DT (SO)
The good news is that we have 3 returning players at DE with 5 years in the program. The bad news is that none of them have any pass rush skills to speak of. Dieke looks the part with his long frame, but there is no lateral ability, hostility, agility, or foot speed to go with his impressive appearance. Cummings has very slow feet for a DE and lacks hand fighting skills required to give OLs a real tough time. Crenshaw can move a little but he has had a hard time finding a spot on the field whether it be OLB in the 3-4 or DE. He is a bit of a tweener. If we move to 4-3, he will likely be at DE. Williams has had his moments at DE but, if he has failed to beat out the senior incumbents, then he is a little short of what we need at the position. Kitchen has been listed at DE and, like others in the past, I have heard rumblings about how tough he was on scout team etc etc. Hopefully he will make an impact this season. On the interior Green is in his 4th year at DT. He is very good at getting low and firing into gaps quickly off the snap, however, he seems to lack endurance and gets swallowed up in the wingspan of OLs when in the pass rush. He is rather short and has been more effective as a run stopper, especially short yardage, than a pass rusher. Gotsis is in his second year. He played extensively as a true freshman. While he made quite a few plays, he looked like a freshman out there most of the time. Getting low is a challenge for him as well, but he has uncanny speed for a guy his size and made a lot of plays last season chasing players down. Hopefully another year in a college system will help fill in the experience gap that he suffers from. He carries his weight easily and has the potential to add a lot more, especially in the upper body.
Coming off Red Shirt: Chunggong DE, Gamble DE, Kallon DL.
Our hopes for the program, on the defensive side of the ball, really lie on the shoulders of these three men. It is unfortunate that this is the case given their youth, but "it is what it is". Kallon was a highly rated recruit (and athlete) who lacked any serious football experience. His HS film showed an amazing amount of agility and a great motor. Hopefully he will be able to combine those natural abilities with the "spark notes" of college football and make an impact this season. We could be looking at another Michael Johnson (+30lbs) or a kid so green around the ears that he sits for another season. Let's hope for the former. He is listed at DL on the roster. I don't know what that means. In my mind he is a DE all the way, but we seem to have a lot of numbers at the position and a lack at DT. Both Chunggong and Gamble have impressed on lookers during their RS years. Once again, there is reason for optimism. Hopefully they will live up to the hype and make a splash this year. Lord knows, there is room for true playmakers to push senior players to the sideline.
New to the program: Akins, Robbins, Commissiong
If any one of these 3 are going to play this season, my money is on Commissiong. We have a ton of numbers at DE and DT remains a position of grave concern. He appears to have the body type and potential to do very well.
In Summary, it is no secret that DL was the achilles heel of the TECH team in 2012. The entire defense, which was stacked with ability on the back 8, was unfortunately built on a very shaky foundation. On the LOS our guys were unable to hold point or get push into the backfield against the pass. That in turn caused our LBs to over run gaps and try and make plays outside their normal responsibilities and our DBs to have to cover much longer than would normally be expected. Without Attaochu having a hand on the ground, I am not sure we would have ever pressured the passer. For TECH to make a charge at the conference title or a BCS bowl, answers will have to be found out of the names mentioned above. I have no idea where they will ultimately come from. On the surface it appears we lack size and quality depth, especially among the more senior players. It is hard to be optimistic when, obviously, we are counting on young players to grab this thing by the neck. But that is where we are.
I'm going to start up another board.
Three Other Sites just sounds better.
Thanks ElCidBUZZingFAN for adding some value to this thread.

Your 3-Tech will be between the Offensive Guard and Offensive Tackle. The 1-Tech will be between the Center and the Offensive Guard.
The distinction isn't that important in some 4-3 systems, where either DT will play both positions. If there is a split, usually the 3-Tech will be a little smaller and a little quicker, while the 1-Tech will be more stout. When a DT gets a high sack count, he's generally a 3-Tech.
I imagine Gotsis' quickness would suit the 3-Tech spot well, if we do wind up making those sort of separate DT positions. I don't know if we will or if we should, given what we've got on the defensive line at the moment
There's some good stuff in the follow up discussion. That's why I originally tried to link to it.
It's really is pretty darn silly and petty not to allow linking between two fan boards of the same team (on both sides).
Here's an interesting post describing the difference between a 1-tech and 3-tech DT and how it applies to our specific DL situation/personnel.
Such is life when you're a board moderator and alienate 2/3s (or more) of the Tech online community because of your childish behavior.
Yeah, I know that already. But it sounds like a bunch of girls in highschool not letting somebody in their clique. It's silly on both sides, as I said earlier.
Btw, the guy in question very rarely posts and the division between pessimism/optimism is almost identical to this board.
I see several common posters between the sites, as well, though some would probably hate to admit it.
The main thing is that there are a handful of very knowledgeable, insightful posters over there, just like here, that make it worthwhile.
