Apparently I'm not googling very well today. Does anyone have a list of all of GT's coaches winning percentages.

So basically PJ is only behind two of the greatest coaches of all time. Seems to get the job done better than most.

In he defense, yes he does. To detract, though, he probably plays more patsies than the coaches of old.

It's very difficult to compare different eras, but another GT fan tried it here on a different GT board: http://247sports.com/threads/70-years-of-gt-football-–-comparing-teams-under-different-coaches.2501/

Well, Heisman constantly carved up juggernauts like the 45th Cavalry and Iowa Preflight. He stopped just short of scheduling the Sisters of the Poor. :turbonoes:

Not as many teams around in the 1910's and 20's, I guess.

Those guys helped win WWI, they weren't pushovers.

Yea, something to that at least in recent history. I think Gailey and PJ have nearly the exact same win % if you factor our FCS schools (at least they did at some point last year)

Here's something I did about a year ago.

  • Highest 5-year win average since the middle of Dodd's tenure.
  • Longest streak of 6 wins or better ever.

And here's an interesting look at our strength of schedule over the years.

From: http://cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/ran...m_rankings.php

Decade -- Schedule Strength Rank
1941-1950 -- 20
1951-1960 -- 16
1961-1970 -- 21
1971-1980 -- 42
1981-1990 -- 38
1991-2000 -- 39
2001-2010 -- 25

So, it looks like our current schedule strengths are higher than at any time since Dodd. And, they are more or less the same as the Dodd era.

More patsies than Dodd? Well, Dodd's teams played Alabama, Florida, LSU, Vanderbilt, Tulane, UGA, Auburn, Clemson, and Tennessee every year. Florida, Clemson, and Auburn were not as good as they are now. On the other hand, Vanderbilt and Tulane were better then than they are now. Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee were just about always really talented and tough. UGA was not the powerhouse they are now but had plenty of talent. So yes, the Dodd teams played a tougher schedule than now but he had much more talent comparatively speaking than PJ has to work with especially on defense.

"average national finish" from 38 to 43? digging into stats pretty deep.

CPJ went to a BCS Bowl Game, beat UGA (and its usually a close game), won an ACC Title, 3/6 years won the Coastal, beat FSU twice, went to Chick-Fil-A/Music City Bowl, etc. He usually has team in position to at least play for something somewhat exciting.

What is Chan Gailey's biggest win? snuck up on Miami in 05 which lead us to nowhere? Gailey never had team in position to play in any big game.

You have an interesting way of agreeing with someone...
