GT named undisputed National Champion for 1990

Not sure who the other teams were in '51 who were better, but 10-0-1 is pretty damn good, Duke or no Duke. Some more obscure polls did rank us number 1, if I remember correctly. Also came close in '56 losing only 0-6 to Tenn, in what was once called the greatest college football game ever played. That last distinction has long been passed on to several other games.
Dodd’s 1956 team was really likely his best. They stubbed their toe against a great Tennessee team. But they absolutely dismantled UGA, Bama, Auburn, Florida and LSU by ridiculous scores

Always held Musburger in high regard because of this though I'm not sure that absolves him for making the word "pardner" common parlance for every booth buddy combo in sports broadcasting. I cringe and throw up a little every time I hear it... which is a god awful amount.
Musberger always seemed a little phony when he did the “pardner” bit. Keith Jackson did it a lot more naturally. Of course he was from Georgia.

I was hoping to see this here. I still think it's a disgrace that anyone voted Colorado number 1 that year. Even their Orange Bowl win was pathetic. Notre Dame already had two losses and was not that good. Colorado only beat them by one point despite FIVE Notre Dame turnovers.

I'm glad that folks are starting to reallize that Georgia Tech was the real champion that year. The correct rankings were:

GT - 1
Miami - 2
FSU - 3
Colorado - 4
Washington - 5

And a phantom penalty.

Good point. Had it been applied, Colorado would have never made it past Mizzou or played in the Orange Bowl
Think of the carnage it would create to just go back and say stuff like, no Miami, you did not beat Nebraska that year.

I was at that game along with 25,000 other Tech fans. There was no doubt when Tech ran off that field that they were the # 1 team in the nation!
It felt like a lot more than 25,000 GT fans there!

I, my wife and kids were at that game. As the Nebraska players were walking off the field, one of them gave my wife the middle finger when she looked at him. On the field, the kids found lots of coins from where people were tearing down the goal posts and it fell out of their pockets - they were young and it was fun for them. I remember the traffic going down I-75 was horrible - bumper to bumper the entire way and I witnessed several accidents as cars rear-ended others. I still have an autographed football from the team that they did after returning back to ATL. It is in a case and still looks great.

Coleman!

I was there. Almost proposed to my future wife at the game but some bozo at the Liberty Bowl beat me to it. Great game! Fun times!
