GT up in the recruiting rankings.

If I counted correctly we are still # 7 in the ACC. Remember we have to play at one time or another those guys who are above us.

You helped lead the charge to remove a coach who had us consistently competing at the highest levels of the conference without the best recruits...its just too bad the change occurred after recruiting had come around and begain improving...

Hold your own probably means .500 or better in the conference each year--which we are one of the few[or maybe only] ACC school to accomplish for the last 6 consecutive years.

Correct...GT and FSU were the only teams during Gailey's tenure to never fall below .500 in the conference.

Not so fast yourself. GOL might have had 2 (maybe 3? I don't think so) top 25 classes out of 7, but that doesn't qualify as "consistent."

If you have facts, please use them properly.

O'Leary did consistantly have top 35 classes. He was also consistantly in the upper 3rd of the ACC in recruiting rankings. The ACC is better now (in terms of recruiting rankings if not actual performance).

I am not gonna argue about the 'competing in at the highest levels of the conference' part since this is a recruiting thread....

if recruiting had not taken 5 years to turn around then we might not be in this situation. 5 years is an eternity in college football.

Look at how CPJ approached his first recruiting class - like his balls were on fire.

There are those of us who want to do more than just compete, we would like to win a championship every once in a while.

I think that these kinds of analyses show that Gailey was good at damage control. He could often hang around and pull of a few upsets because of his rigid adherence to game plan, etc. However its also the same reason why he could never win the biggest ones, cause he would rigidly adhere to the plan when he needed to grab opportunities to win. He was mediocre by definition and couldn't rise above it.

6 years was long enough and many of the brain dead decisions when the game was on the line were enough for me.

There is a correlation, but it's much looser than the services want us to believe. As PJ recruits more option talent as opposed to pro talent, GT will also have one of the biggest discrepancies between recruiting rankings and results.

As we did under Gailey.

I think we'll have a discrepancy between average recruiting rankings and results, but it might not be as big as it has been. CPJ's first class is getting more respect qualitatively than any of Gailey's did before last year. To me it still looks very underrated, especially the 3 "W" backs.

I'm also interested in how Bama is second in the Rivals rankings. Methinks they've milked those star ratings to capitalize the most on the Saban lovefest.

Bama is still the favorite for Julio Jones, who would probably make them #1 on both sites. They are already #1 on Scout and effectively tied with UF for #1 on Rivals (only 4 points difference).

Still, in average quality Bama is not in the top 5 on either site. Having 29 commits makes up for it with quantity. If they get Jones then three will have to attrite at least temporarily one way or another before the fall (they had two early entries).

I thought Tech's teams under Gailey were REALLY good -- except at QB.

I was surprised every year by how physical Tech could be on both lines of scrimmage. We had good defenses and power running games, and had good overall kicking. There was noone GT couldn't run the ball on. Until 2008 there was always at least one really good WR, too.

Tech has put a pretty respectable number of LB's and DB's into the NFL the last five years, and a scattering at a few other positions.

Add a good three-year starting QB from say 2005-2007, and GT would have been a terror.

And we never even had a full roster. To me that shows that the recruiting and player development were VERY strong -- at all but one position.

Unfortunately, that one position is by far the most important and it became our achilles' heel.

Among other things it resulted in outgaining and outrushing UGA a couple of years and losing anyway. :-(

Ayyyuuup. We were outstanding on defense, often led the ACC in rushing, and couldn't throw the ball to save our lives. That was the Gailey era in a nutshell.
